JPMorgan counting on us buyandhold investors to save them

Turn off your RMD auto-distribution: don’t sell shares now
Those of us with automatic RMD distributions may want to suspend this service temporarily. We have until December 31 each year (unless this is your 1st year) to take the amount required from qualified accounts in order to pay tax on the gains. Taking your RMD at the bottom of the market will cost you more precious shares than previous years. Don’t LOCK-IN your losses! I put an alarm in my cell to tell me to switch RMD distributions back on in July, Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov or December just in case I forget. We must take our full calculated RMD by December 31. Our past schedule is void. Hopefully the market will regain some of its 25% losses by then. You can do this on Vanguard’s account summary page with the link in right column:
Required minimum distribution”

It took 4 years for the stock market index to recover from 2008 lows
Depending on your portfolio profile, it will take time to recover from this stock market correction. If you use the stock market as your checking or savings account, you will suffer when you sell. If however, you are a long-term investor, just turn your head from the daily gyrations and BUY like Buffett. Last year the stock market gained 31%. The long-term average is still 11%. If you pay your advisor 2% you will have to wait a longer time. If you think of your money in terms of short- and long-term reserves, this correction has no impact on your ultimate goals. John Bogle, founder of Vanguard, said that you can control what you pay for advice not control the market. Giving away 2% of your long-term money will decrease your final accumulation by up to 63%. “Over a 50-year investing lifetime, that little 2 percent fee will erode 63 percent of what you would have had. As Bogle puts it, “the tyranny of compounding costs” is overwhelming.”

Why market timing does NOT work
JPMorgan found that the 40 best days accounted for more than the entire S&P 500 return from 1993–2013. If you miss the best days trying to time the best exit and enter days, you end up with returns just above the inflation rate: 3.79%. Buffett says: “The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient.” We need patience while it is going up and going down. “A very low-cost index is going to beat a majority of the amateur-managed money or professionally-managed money.” Why? Because no professional has beaten the market return over time. They say they have but they picked two of their lucky days to market their hype. Research: from 1871–2016, the 5 most positive monthly returns in S&P 500 history came in the 1930s as the U.S. came OUT of the Great Depression Time to BUY: smart money moves to Vanguard.

JPMorgan counting on us buyandhold investors to save them
Speculators who send stocks down by selling to avoid the lows in a panic like the current one are counting on us long-term investors to bail them out according to JPMorgan. Strategists at the bank reckon there’s a good chance that buy-and-hold managers like pension funds, insurers, sovereign wealth funds and the like are ready to stabilize markets with stock buying in order to rebalance their portfolios away from bonds. Stocks have fallen so much that many institutions will be forced to sell bonds to rebalance their holdings. Some analysts say that rebalancing is not necessary since stocks and bonds eventually rebound to their original ratios in the long term. Rebalancing is actually selling winners before their time. It is a form of market timing. Tortoise not hare wins.

How teacher 403b plan advisors get paid
Teachers may be losing HALF their potential retirement funds to advisors and plan sponsors. Some 403b plans are actually annuities with excessive fees—2.5% a year plus recordkeeping fees, maintenance fees and contract fees. You might be contributing a great amount of your salary every year—$4,400 a year—but plans are taking $2,000. If you invested in stocks and your account grew to $500,000 by age 66, you would be paying over $12,000 a year for few services. Services would be in the form of a telephone service center, not a live advisor. Even though your school organization is charged by law to provide fiduciary duty (best options for you), they contract it out to an insurer or other “third party.” There are so many ‘mouths’ to feed that you are left with the crumbs. 401k plans at larger organizations are now repaying their workers after many years of overcharging for retirement fund services. Your teacher union may have already started action against your 403b plan administrator. Robbing you blind.

Who got rich from the last bailout?
Your tax dollars are going to make many rich people richer. During the last bailout crisis, even the foreign banks and profitable firms  got money they did not need. None of them said no. This time Boeing, which killed a lot of people from bad management, wants $60 BILLIONS of our money. The whole leisure class industry wants $BILLIONS including The Boss’s hotels, golf resorts, and global properties. Most of those crying for bailouts had large surpluses from huge profits during the last 12-year bull market. They spent it on themselves—buybacks, CEO bonuses, more jets, etc. Remember, many of these firms have paid no taxes for years. Like The Boss, they have used every trick in the book to avoid paying their fair share. An unbiased analysis of this situation would be that America is a socialist country for the rich. We pay subsidies to profitable firms and have been doing so for decades. Subsidies to the elites is what American is all about. Even our Reps use info illegally. Lobbyists tell our Reps what to subsidize in return for election money. Why are we still providing oil, coal and gas subsidies to profitable companies? Trump pays oil/gas companies when the oil/gas market price falls. He promises agribusiness price guarantees and support payments to keep that group voting for him. The national debt has surged from $20 trillion to $23 trillion since Trump started. He promised to pay it all off.

File your taxes for free
TurboTax and other for-profit tax prep firms are due to raise prices soon. If you have your documents, use your favorite software now and file your tax now for refund. The payment, if any, can be in July; the filing should not. Rumors confirmed: filing delayed to July 15. Check your state for deadline. The federal and state filing can cost you nothing at https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/. Another site has no cost or restrictions: https://www.creditkarma.com/tax. And remember you can usually reduce income and thus tax by making a deductible contribution to your IRA. File now for refund: 90 day interest-free extension if you owe.

Tax break to the rich runs up debt

American ‘socialism’ for the rich runs up our debt
Since Trump’s tax benefits went to the top 10% and Trump’s tariffs are taking $1,000 per family, you have to consider each taxpayer will pay $17,000 for his national debt increase. And the tax benefits were NOT paid for by increased business. Usually when the economy is booming and unemployment is low, government pays down the debt. Not this time. We are still paying corporations $100 billion in subsidies every year even though Trump just cut their taxes from 35% to 21%. Many pay NOTHING due to the loopholes our representatives gave them. There are tax credits we can use.

Put your money to work so you don’t have to.
Accumulate $250,000, $500,000 even $1,000,000.
Compounding is what Warren Buffett counts on for success.
“My wealth has come from a combination of living in America, some lucky genes, and
compound interest.
How much can your money earn for you? $1 million from your $99,000 investment.
Your $250 a month investment may grow to $1,000,000 or more and it can be tax FREE. That $3,000 a year for 33 years ($99,000) compounds to $1 million if you put it to work: Low-cost stock index fund earns 11% per year after fees over time. Advisor-managed funds earn 3.79% over time. Compounding does not work as well if your advisor is trading, market-timing, rebalancing or rotating sectors.

Claiming 150% of SS benefits even if one spouse did not work
Even if one spouse has no Social Security benefit of their own, together a couple would get 150% of the worker's monthly benefit for life. This rule comes from the time when only one bread winner ‘worked.’ (SS does not count taking care of 2 kids.) See Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. The worker has to file for benefits first but then spousal benefits can be taken too. The worker who claimed before age 66 would lose some benefits if they continued to work. Since the rules are complicated, you should visit your local SS office as soon as one of you reaches age 62. Find out the best plan for the both of you since you may receive more as a couple than separately. The future of SS and Medicare is uncertain so don’t rely on these alone. The GOP got their tax bonanza and now wants to cut our ‘entitlements’ even though we already paid for them. Remember, GOP pays no FICA tax on income over $132,900 and no FICA or Medicare tax on their capital gains and interest incomes. For instance, Warren Buffett pays a lower tax rate than any of his employees: 17.7% vs 32.9%. youtube.com/watch?v=Cu5B-2LoC4s

Give your child a leg up: Make sure they can make and manage money
Only 17 states require your child to learn how to determine which investment pays the highest return on their money. Most think it is a savings account. This could be one reason most of us are going to be broke in retirement and the amount of credit card debt has doubled to over $8,000 per household. Children are moving back home after racking up huge student loan debts. Most parents have no clue about the fundamentals of personal finance—investing, interest rates, compound interest, why the rich get richer, and avoiding debt by creating your own ‘bank’ of tax-FREE accounts. Unbiased advice is easily available. For instance, if I loaned $250 a month to big companies we use every day, over time, with interest on my money left with them, would grow to be $63,000 in 10 years, $245,000 in 20 years, and $790,000 in 30 years. The Miracle of Compounding: I loaned them $90,000 ($3,000 X 30 yrs) and now I have $790,000. If I use a tax-FREE account, the amount is not taxed—now or later. I learned from John Bogle that you give up 63% of your total potential nest egg if you pay someone 2% a year to handle your money. Warren Buffett’s advice is so simple, anyone can follow it.
Explain the ‘facts of life’: https://www.amazon.com/Give-your-child-leg-manage/dp/1096505355/

Why do we try?
It’s the active-passive paradox – almost every investor agrees that it’s nigh impossible to beat the market, and almost every investor tries to beat it anyway. Vanguard funds—those with stock-picking managers—repeat the same outcome. Only two of the 57 funds consistently outperformed their benchmarks. This study of managed funds concluded that all of Vanguard’s active strategies could be replicated “more cost effectively through the use of index funds.” Even with lower costs, Vanguard’s managed funds could not beat its own index funds. Costs turn out to be important—even for low-cost Vanguard funds.

When to file taxes separately
Generally it is advantageous for a married couple to file jointly. Filing a joint return comes with many well-known benefits, including a lower tax bracket at both the federal and state level, a larger standard deduction and the opportunity to qualify for multiple tax credits. However, there are particular instances when a couple should file separately. Married taxpayers may be aware of certain “red flag” situations, for example when one spouse has significant debt, past unpaid tax liabilities, ‘shady’ tax history, or income-based student loans. Healthcare may be a lesser-known reason to lead a married couple to file separately. Ask your tax pro about situations when filing your tax returns as ‘married filing separately’ is best. Verify your tax-FREE retirement account.

When is the best time to buy stocks?
Warren Buffett has followed his mentor Benjamin Graham’s advice: “buy stocks as they bought their groceries, not as they bought their perfume.” If your supermarket has a sale on your favorite food, do you buy more? When chicken breasts are on sale for $1.99 a pound, I buy two family packs. I freeze one—regular price $5.89/lb. Buffett recently won his bet with a hedge fund guru who used 5 different investment strategies to beat Buffett’s choice. Buffett bet $1 million that the Vanguard 500 Index would outpace the manager’s picks. Buffett won: 7% a year versus 2.2%. He did not trade or time the markets. When we buy on sale, we get 10 fund shares instead of just 8. When the price goes up each year, our account value increases exponentially.

Save $3,000 this year on financials for a brighter tomorrow

Save $3,000 this year on financials for a brighter tomorrow
My future nest egg is always my concern at the start of a year. Where can I find a permanent $3,000 a year to increase my future Wealth Reserve? I use my tax refund. I shop for lower car, house and liability insurance. I ask for a better price on my phone, TV and Internet deal. Yesterday I bought stamps for the year because the price is going from 50 to 55 cents—that’s 10% Mr Trump! This doesn’t save much but it is the principle I value. I told the clerk Allan that we will just mail fewer cards if he keeps raising prices. I will buy more soup this week as it is on sale—10 for $8.99. I already stopped my life insurance, annuity, accident and disability at work. We dropped TurboTax in favor of FreeTaxUSA. We shifted to gas from electric appliances. The largest cut was in moving all our high-rate debts to a HELOC at 3.49%. Our student loan interest is still deductible so we kept that. We gave up our brokerage account and non-Vanguard mutual funds and moved them all to Vanguard for their lower Admiral expense rate averaging 0.11%. We have moved most of our money to the lower end with 500 Index and Wellesley Income funds. Our brokerage and non-Vanguard funds cost over 1% or $2,500 a year. We bought stocks on sale in December for future gains.
We estimate adding another $150,000 to our Wealth Reserve over time: https://www.amazon.com/Build-Wealth-Without-Extra-Money/dp/1448677505

Check ALL your tax credits
2018 was first year of the new Trump tax rules. Don’t leave it up to your preparer to find all your credits. Use the Trump administration as your guide to pay less. Find your tax credits and pay Zero tax like Jared. One year, The Don had $916 million tax LOSS on paper so he paid NO taxes for up to 18 years. If you have any kind of business, take his new 20% pass-thru deduction against your income. Other deductions/credits include education, medical, savings, electric cars, child, etc. Trump had the IRS create 6 new Schedules so that he could boast that he made the ‘post card’ tax return. HE LIED. Truth is he just created more paper. 1040 looks like the old EZ-1040 which is eliminated. Now with more schedules and worksheets, a middle-income joint return will be over 25 pages up from 15. Since most preparers use a software package, the winners are the paid preparers who charge by the page. Our average cost is now $250-300. The least expensive way to file is to use the IRS approved preparers at Free File. Some have no income limits: File advanced and simple federal taxes for free.

Another way you and I can’t avoid taxes like the wealthy do
When you are really wealthy, you can hide some of your assets and gains inside an insurance policy. For non-taxable income you use policy loans. Athletes, celebrities, and family offices are embracing private placement life insurance to avoid taxes and create a family legacy. Investments that produce earnings taxed as regular income are the best candidates to put in these policies. For insurers, these multi-million dollar contracts carry reduced fees justified by size. 0.7% on $3 million is worth more than 1.5% on $ ½ million normal life. All gains on the $3,000,000 are tax free. The Treasury estimated in October that it will lose about $166 billion over the next decade by not taxing insured death benefits. One tax shelter is available to avoid paying the taxes the wealthy avoid.

Is your company the best place to save for retirement?
“They did everyone dirty,” said Kilby Baker, 70, a retired warehouse worker whose pension check was cut by about 25 percent after Marsh Supermarkets withdrew from the pension. The owners got all their money back in the bankruptcy—taking the workers’ pensions  with them. Even a large business like Marsh fell victim to private equity buy-outs. Maybe using your firm’s 401k isn’t so smart after all. Unless your company is providing a contribution match, an IRA with low-cost funds may be a smarter move. An IRA can provide tax-deferred savings with direct debit from your checking account. Your trustee does the investing for you by using a low-cost Target Date fund or broad stock fund. You can reduce the income that gets taxed just like a 401k. You avoid the plan fees charged by some 401k administrators. You use the investment strategy recommended by Warren Buffett. Your IRA is protected from your firm and your personal creditors. You avoid your company stealing your money. Sears pensioners may be next.

Why are retirement plans failing most of us?
When we change jobs, almost HALF of us cash out our retirement funds. Most of us have no savings to tide us over to the next job so we spend our ‘future’ security. Cashing out is possibly the single most harmful decision to achieving a financially secure retirement that an employee can make — next to not contributing at all. The penalty and back taxes are the least of the problem. About 22% of active and contributed defined-contribution participants will change jobs each year. Of these job changers, Retirement Clearinghouse reports some 41% will cash out their retirement plan. We give up $250,000 or more by not allowing our money to compound in a low-cost stock fund. Based on the average stock market (S&P 500) earnings of 11% a year, our $25,000 cash out could have grown to $1 million if we had just left it alone for 40 years. Even at $12,500, our cash out would grow to $247,967 in 30 years at 10% even if we never added another dime. As Warren Buffett said: “My wealth has come from a combination of living in America, some lucky genes, and compound interest.” It is compounding over time that makes wealth.

McConnell’s GOP calls for cuts in our Social Security and Medicare
Now that the Dems own the House, GOP is worried about paying for the WALL and the tax breaks and $17 Trillion debt so they want Dems to be blamed for cuts. We can avoid the cuts by using a legal tax shelter for working people. We can avoid paying for some of this huge overspending by putting our retirement money in an IRS-approved tax shelter. We then avoid tax on the money and the earnings after age 59 ½. We don’t need a lawyer or offshore account to avoid the future taxes and cuts in SS and Medicare. We can rely on our compounded earnings. $3,000 a year goes into the account over time and $1,000,000 comes out tax FREE. We spend it all with no increased taxes. SS benefits get reduced in 2034 so we need a supplement. We avoid paying for the tax breaks for the rich too.

How did you do in 2018?
Our clients use Vanguard funds to maintain a broad diversified portfolio which has provided over 11% total returns for years. 2018 was negative 7.7%--not as bad as some years like 2008 not as good as others like 2013. Since the overall market has produced a steady 10-12% over any 10 year period, we consider it the safest place for our long-term funds. Even in retirement, our clients are counting on equities to maintain a higher return than the alternatives. Above all, we consider low-cost in any investment to be key. Our clients have learned over time that neither moving in and out of the market nor putting money in hot topics has worked out well for them. There is no guarantee for the future but inflation requires more than a bank CD.
