Put your money to work so you don’t have to

DIY Financial Independence: Freedom Workbook
Put your money to work so you don’t have to.
Use your IRS-approved tax shelter—Pay 0% on asset gains. Accumulate $250,000, $500,000 even $1,000,000 tax-FREE. You achieve Financial Independence by having enough money to do what you want. When you don't have to rely on work to survive, you are financially independent. Playing it safe won't achieve it. You don't have to be super wealthy to become free of money worries. Financially independent people have one thing in common: they put their money to work so they don't have to. If you don't put your money to work, you will never be free.         'Compound interest' is the name of the process by which money makes money. You don't need to do a thing besides sending $250 to work every month. You earn money every time you buy things. You own part of the businesses. Compounding is what Warren Buffett counts on for success.
“My wealth has come from a combination of living in America, some lucky genes, and
compound interest.” How much can your money earn for you? It depends on how long it works and where you put it to work. The best strategy is to use your Wealth Reserve to shield your money while it works. You can use a special IRS-approved Tax-FREE account to avoid all tax on investment dividends, earnings and interest. You can also avoid the fees and commissions on this account. Your $250 a month investment may grow to $1,000,000 or more and it is all tax FREE. That $3,000 a year for 33 years ($99,000) compounds to $1 million if you put it to work.

Why do we earn so little in a managed account?
In every period of time for the last 30 years, we earn much less in our advisor-managed account. DALBAR tracks the performance of our accounts versus the market indices and finds less each period. For the last 30 years, we earned 3.79% vs 11.06% for the market. Morningstar blames costs: “In every single time period and data point tested, low-cost funds beat high-cost funds." It is a Wall Street myth that we need an advisor. Now we have research and data that tells us (for free) that we can earn more by paying less. Trading, market timing and expense ratios can reduce our total possible accumulation by 63%. Most clients claim they need an advisor for guidance but they don’t consider inherent conflict of interests. First, advisors can’t give unbiased advice: they sell what for-profit firms pick for profits. Second, advisors are trained as salespeople—they don’t know what the markets will do. They learn to win our trust so they can sell us anything. Third, most advisors do NOT know about the best products for us. The products they sell must have higher costs built in. For instance, most 401k and 403b savers/investors believe their employer does not charge for their retirement plan. Most think the plan was chosen wisely: greatest benefit possible for us. There are no price tags on the retirement stuff we buy so we end up with $104,000 instead of $151,000. Your plan costs are hidden because your employer does not want to pay for them. Ask how much you pay!

Are commission-FREE ETFs really free?
Schwab has just added to its platform of no commission index (ETF) funds. Fidelity and Vanguard are in the price war too. But are there no costs involved? its bid/ask spread--the difference in the lowest price a seller is willing to accept and the highest price a buyer is willing to pay as of the last trade--was wide. When the spread is wide, you can end up paying more for an ETF than it is actually worth--and this can easily add up to more than a broker’s $10 trading fee. Unlike open-end mutual funds that are bought and sold at Net Asset Value (NAV), ETFs are traded throughout the day at whatever price clears the market. At times, an ETF’s price may deviate from its NAV. When an ETF’s price is more than its NAV, the ETF is trading at a premium. When an ETF’s price is less than its NAV, the ETF is said to be trading at a discount. If you buy an ETF at a premium, you’ll be paying more than you need to and putting yourself at an immediate disadvantage. Likewise, if you sell an ETF at a significant discount to NAV, you’ll essentially shortchange yourself on some of the gains. Some ETF’s are not traded often so you may have trouble selling them. Some have fees to sell if not held long enough. Some do not perform well so you lose. In real estate trusts, some are earning 8% where others earn 5%. Unless you have insider information, regular funds have better long-term returns.

Trump’s ‘National Socialism’
Trump’s tax-credit party is now demanding another tax cut for the rich. Every American who pays tax on their capital gains—dividends and earning from capital—will pay less tax. National Socialism means money from every working person that pays tax on wages will be used to benefit the top 5% of the wealthy who live on their capital. Wealthy folks demand more tax cuts after receiving a huge windfall this year. That’s outrageous! TX Cruz bid for reelection is cemented by goosing the Treasury Secretary to ignore Congress and just declare the tax break on capital by an executive order dictator. Meanwhile, Trump’s new tariffs will slow sales, jobs just to pay for new tax cuts for the rich. Trump still thinks China tariffs are paid by China instead of by Americans via higher prices. Americans who struggle to make enough to help their families survive will have to pay more for most goods—‘made in China’. Trump has adopted Marx’s idea: "From each according to his ability [to be taxed on wages], to each according to his needs" [for a tax break]. The tax-credit class needs to blame the minorities to divert attention and the state propaganda machinery (Fox) does it. Dems don’t even realize what is going on.

Another way the wealthy avoid their fair share of TAXES
You could do this tactic if you had the money but you don’t. Wealthy buy or keep art then take a loan against it. They spend the money as tax-FREE income. Living off your Rembrandt for years? The majority of art lending clients are ultra-high-net-worth individual art collectors, according to a report by the European Fine Art Fair, with dealers accounting for just under 10% of borrowers. Most lenders will lend up to 50% of the value of the artwork, so a painting appraised at $10 million will be good for a loan of up to $5 million. Lenders across the industry said default rates are typically very low, almost negligible. Some borrowers are opportunistic—when they see a good business offer, or a chance to buy a great work of art, they want access to capital, and fast. An art lender only needs to value the art and write up a contract, compared with, say, a mortgage lender, who might need extensive credit checks, salary history, and the like. “It’s a way to buy art without having to disrupt your life.” Some just want more capital to buy stuff.

How millionaires become millionaires

Millionaires have spent years saving just like us
The study found that a majority of people who have $1 million or more in investable assets do not consider themselves wealthy. In fact, only 13% of that group see themselves as being rich. But 53% of millionaires said they have a specific target amount or a rough idea of how much they need to save and invest, with 43% indicating that they have a detailed plan. Only 4% of respondents said they do not have any type of financial plan. Most juggle many financial goals, wants and needs. Almost half said they handle investment decisions by themselves. Most said “experiences are more important than possessions” so their money goal is matched to doing things not buying things. What makes millionaires different is that they put their money to work as hard as they do. And they do NOT pay others to “handle investment decisions.” That reduces their earnings. The only way to reach their money goals is to invest in a broad array of stocks and stock mutual funds at cost. They earn over 11% a year not 3.79% with a ‘managed’ account.

Investing books for young and old savers
John Bogle, founder of Vanguard’s low-cost mutual funds: pay less; earn more!

Burton Malkiel, Princeton, indexing not stock-picking makes you rich.

Stanley/Danko, study of HOW real working millionaires live and earn their money.

Warren Buffett, successful investor, shows you how to create financial independence.

Inflation will take HALF your nest egg in retirement
Over your retirement years, your purchasing power will fall about 50% due to inflation. This is one reason an annuity offered by your advisor will not be best for you—the monthly benefit buys less every year. Your $1 million at age 65 will be worth about $500,000 by age 85. If you plan on taking 4% a year for expenses, you need to make 6+% a year. This is do-able if you invest at least HALF your bundle in stocks or stock funds. You must bust inflation wide open or your future income is in jeopardy. How can you do that safely? A little risk goes a long way. Think of it this way: part of your assets are for 2 years out, part for 10 years out and part for 15+ years out. Don’t think that all your assets will be needed at the same time. You can afford a little risk with those 15 year assets. Your bank CD/money market works for 1 year but won’t cut it for later. For later, a balanced fund is best. A long-term winner is the low-cost (0.23%) Wellesley Income Fund. Its allocation of 60% bonds/40% stocks and has provided nearly 10% a year since 1970. Plan 2 year, 10 year and 15+ buckets. Use buckets in the same fund family.

Why does stock-picking and market-timing NOT work for us?
If you watch or read about Wall Street titans, you might think that you need an advisor to help you grow your investments. NOT TRUE. Fidelity found that their client accounts that were most successful were those put on automatic--left alone--forgotten. Our greatest investor Warren Buffett said, "The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient." Buffett claims that his holding period is forever. He advocates compounding (allow earnings on earnings to grow exponentially): "My wealth has come from a combination of living in America, some lucky genes, and compound interest." Indeed, he has owned many companies and stocks for a long time: GEICO, Coke, and American Express. He uses the earnings to buy companies. His strategy works because his money does NOT trade, rebalance, market time, buy high-sell low or sector rotate—it compounds: money earning money automatically. Keep advisors away.

How much of your 401k money goes to other people?
Many working people think that their retirement plan at work is free because fees are not shown in their statements. This is another Wall Street trick. It is your money but the people your boss hires to manage it take a large share. There is your plan administrator, the person who sold it to your boss and the mutual fund that invests the money. Now Fidelity admits there are ‘secret’ fees too. All told, you could be paying over 2% of your 9% earnings to Wall Street and your boss. Over your working life, the costs can take up to 63% of your possible accumulation. So instead of you retiring with $1.1 million, you receive only $660,000. You can avoid giving away $510,000 by using your 401k only if you receive a match and only if you have a low-cost stock plan option. Many savers have stopped using their 401k and set up automatic investing with a low-cost mutual firm like Vanguard, Schwab, TD Ameritrade using an IRA or Tax-FREE Roth IRA. These trusts protect your accumulations and save you having to move your 401k when jobs change and in retirement. The trustee debits your checking and invests your contributions like a 401k. However, you earn the full 8-11% in a stock fund costing as little as 0.04%. It’s your money and you take all the risks.

Cut taxes and build retirement income by April 15

Not too late to cut taxes and build retirement income
You may owe the IRS this year or receive a smaller refund. You can change that by increasing your deductions by $12,000 for a joint return; $6,000 for single. Open and fund a traditional IRA at your bank, mutual fund or broker by April 15, and you can reduce your income, thus lowering your tax obligations. A traditional IRA will also grow tax deferred so you pay taxes on the income and its accumulations when you retire. Hopefully you tax bracket will be lower then. If building retirement income sounds like a great idea, how about using your refund to create a nest egg of as much as $1 million. The average refund is about $2,900. Investing in a low-cost broad market index like the Vanguard S&P 500 for about 34 years will provide about $1,000,000. This is the perfect way to have the money when you need it even if your employer does not offer a 401k account. You can set up automatic investing from your checking so you never miss a market rise. You just keep investing year after year—no trading, no broker fees, nothing! Your future $1 million is in your refund: https://www.amazon.com/401k-IRA-Tax-FREE-Tax-Deferred-retirement/dp/1475057938

Our new taxes are going to GM refund: $104 million refund in 2018, ’19 ’20 …
We are not fooled by Trump’s claim that his tax law changes were for the middle class. Our taxes go to many large profitable firms like GM, Ford and others. They haven’t paid taxes in years just like Trump. Even after bailing out their bad management decisions in 2007-8, they don’t pay taxes on sizable profits now. They still cut jobs and send them to other countries. For instance, GM and Ford have decided they will not make cars HERE anymore. Also, GM's former CFO, Chuck Stevens, said last year that because of the tax credits GM had, the company would not be paying any U.S. income tax "for the next several years.” This can go on forever because a “business cannot know how many loss carryforwards it will need each year to offset the taxes.” This is like us spending more than we make and using our debt, credit card and student loan debt, as an offset to future taxes. We would never pay taxes if our reps had written the tax code for us instead of for large corporations. When they make poor decisions, they get a tax credit for future years.

Why John Bogle’s invention is so important to us
Bogle just died. He created the Vanguard Group of mutual funds as a kind of Co-op: we, the investors, own the Vanguard Funds. His investment invention, the Vanguard 500 Index, was offered in 1976. It allowed us to own the stocks of most of the large companies in this economy at low cost. He noticed that the money management industry provided profits to the fund owners whether or not investors made money. As the industry got bigger, the costs went up instead of down as in most industries. He compared the returns of the managers of the funds to the returns of an index of all large stocks. The index gave more consistent returns—not too high and not too low. Investors were able to estimate returns within a close range—10-12% per year over time. Test it yourself: moneychimp.com/features/market_cagr.htm. Bogle’s index fund offered every investor the chance to do well with lower costs. When investors pay 2% of their nest egg EVERY year, they give up 63% of the total possible accumulation over time. As Bogle put it, “the tyranny of compounding costs” is overwhelming—over HALF of our money is going to our brokers, staff, owners, marketers, and others. It is COSTS that determine how we do.

Are you paying for 401k plan kickbacks to Fidelity?
Fidelity has been sued by a 401(k)-plan participant for accepting "secret payments" from certain retirement-plan business partners. In this so-called pay-to-play scheme, Fidelity required mutual funds and other investment products offered through its FundsNetwork platform to make "kickback" payments if the revenue-sharing payments (such as 12b-1 fees) they made to Fidelity fell below a certain level, according to the class-action lawsuit. Fidelity makes $ millions from the payments, which are not disclosed and are "deceptively characterized" to retirement-plan clients, according to the lawsuit. The payments allegedly harm retirement savers by increasing the costs of the mutual funds. Fidelity started requiring kickbacks in 2017 when 401k-plan participants chose index funds with no revenue sharing from plan record keepers. 401k fees reduce our retirement savings.

Is a trust the right beneficiary for your IRA?
If you have a sizable IRA account, you may be concerned about leaving the whole thing to one child or couple (community property states). Heirs who inherit an IRA directly — not through a trust — lose the IRA protections. Trusts shield IRA assets in the event of lawsuits, business failures, divorce and creditors, for example. Heirs have access to the assets but the access may be designed to limit complete disillusion. For parents of a spend thrift adult child, the trust may be the only way to protect them. Naming the spouse as beneficiary just delays this decision. Spouses can roll over the decedent's IRA assets into their own IRA tax-free. The spouse has the burden of how to pass on assets. Finally, a trust is costly to maintain so the size of assets must be substantial to warrant a trust. There are rules to follow closely. The RMDs would still be required for the IRA. You must select the proper type of trust: "see-through" or "look-through" trust. The RMDs are smaller since the lifetime of the trust bene is longer. However, trust fees can eat up the actual payout to an heir.

Trump’s new taxes allow wealthy to buy planes
The new tax regulations were supposed to cap the extra perks used by executives of any company including their own private jet. However, once again, their lawyers and accountants have found a way around the tax law. The “bonus depreciation” creates sizable business losses that are now capped. They can avoid the limit on “excess business losses” by changing the name of their revenue stream thus soaking up the sizable business loss that buying an airplane usually creates. They can thus avoid a capital gains tax bill on their income and ordinary taxes on their fees. While this avoidance trick doesn’t affect investors like pension funds or foreign individuals and businesses, it can hurt U.S. individual investors—us. The new cap on losses was supposed to raise nearly $150 billion over a decade, according to Congress’s Joint Committee on Taxation. Now we taxpayers will need to make up that $150 billion loss by paying more taxes on wages.

Save $3,000 this year on financials for a brighter tomorrow

Save $3,000 this year on financials for a brighter tomorrow
My future nest egg is always my concern at the start of a year. Where can I find a permanent $3,000 a year to increase my future Wealth Reserve? I use my tax refund. I shop for lower car, house and liability insurance. I ask for a better price on my phone, TV and Internet deal. Yesterday I bought stamps for the year because the price is going from 50 to 55 cents—that’s 10% Mr Trump! This doesn’t save much but it is the principle I value. I told the clerk Allan that we will just mail fewer cards if he keeps raising prices. I will buy more soup this week as it is on sale—10 for $8.99. I already stopped my life insurance, annuity, accident and disability at work. We dropped TurboTax in favor of FreeTaxUSA. We shifted to gas from electric appliances. The largest cut was in moving all our high-rate debts to a HELOC at 3.49%. Our student loan interest is still deductible so we kept that. We gave up our brokerage account and non-Vanguard mutual funds and moved them all to Vanguard for their lower Admiral expense rate averaging 0.11%. We have moved most of our money to the lower end with 500 Index and Wellesley Income funds. Our brokerage and non-Vanguard funds cost over 1% or $2,500 a year. We bought stocks on sale in December for future gains.
We estimate adding another $150,000 to our Wealth Reserve over time: https://www.amazon.com/Build-Wealth-Without-Extra-Money/dp/1448677505

Check ALL your tax credits
2018 was first year of the new Trump tax rules. Don’t leave it up to your preparer to find all your credits. Use the Trump administration as your guide to pay less. Find your tax credits and pay Zero tax like Jared. One year, The Don had $916 million tax LOSS on paper so he paid NO taxes for up to 18 years. If you have any kind of business, take his new 20% pass-thru deduction against your income. Other deductions/credits include education, medical, savings, electric cars, child, etc. Trump had the IRS create 6 new Schedules so that he could boast that he made the ‘post card’ tax return. HE LIED. Truth is he just created more paper. 1040 looks like the old EZ-1040 which is eliminated. Now with more schedules and worksheets, a middle-income joint return will be over 25 pages up from 15. Since most preparers use a software package, the winners are the paid preparers who charge by the page. Our average cost is now $250-300. The least expensive way to file is to use the IRS approved preparers at Free File. Some have no income limits: File advanced and simple federal taxes for free.

Another way you and I can’t avoid taxes like the wealthy do
When you are really wealthy, you can hide some of your assets and gains inside an insurance policy. For non-taxable income you use policy loans. Athletes, celebrities, and family offices are embracing private placement life insurance to avoid taxes and create a family legacy. Investments that produce earnings taxed as regular income are the best candidates to put in these policies. For insurers, these multi-million dollar contracts carry reduced fees justified by size. 0.7% on $3 million is worth more than 1.5% on $ ½ million normal life. All gains on the $3,000,000 are tax free. The Treasury estimated in October that it will lose about $166 billion over the next decade by not taxing insured death benefits. One tax shelter is available to avoid paying the taxes the wealthy avoid.

Is your company the best place to save for retirement?
“They did everyone dirty,” said Kilby Baker, 70, a retired warehouse worker whose pension check was cut by about 25 percent after Marsh Supermarkets withdrew from the pension. The owners got all their money back in the bankruptcy—taking the workers’ pensions  with them. Even a large business like Marsh fell victim to private equity buy-outs. Maybe using your firm’s 401k isn’t so smart after all. Unless your company is providing a contribution match, an IRA with low-cost funds may be a smarter move. An IRA can provide tax-deferred savings with direct debit from your checking account. Your trustee does the investing for you by using a low-cost Target Date fund or broad stock fund. You can reduce the income that gets taxed just like a 401k. You avoid the plan fees charged by some 401k administrators. You use the investment strategy recommended by Warren Buffett. Your IRA is protected from your firm and your personal creditors. You avoid your company stealing your money. Sears pensioners may be next.

Why are retirement plans failing most of us?
When we change jobs, almost HALF of us cash out our retirement funds. Most of us have no savings to tide us over to the next job so we spend our ‘future’ security. Cashing out is possibly the single most harmful decision to achieving a financially secure retirement that an employee can make — next to not contributing at all. The penalty and back taxes are the least of the problem. About 22% of active and contributed defined-contribution participants will change jobs each year. Of these job changers, Retirement Clearinghouse reports some 41% will cash out their retirement plan. We give up $250,000 or more by not allowing our money to compound in a low-cost stock fund. Based on the average stock market (S&P 500) earnings of 11% a year, our $25,000 cash out could have grown to $1 million if we had just left it alone for 40 years. Even at $12,500, our cash out would grow to $247,967 in 30 years at 10% even if we never added another dime. As Warren Buffett said: “My wealth has come from a combination of living in America, some lucky genes, and compound interest.” It is compounding over time that makes wealth.

McConnell’s GOP calls for cuts in our Social Security and Medicare
Now that the Dems own the House, GOP is worried about paying for the WALL and the tax breaks and $17 Trillion debt so they want Dems to be blamed for cuts. We can avoid the cuts by using a legal tax shelter for working people. We can avoid paying for some of this huge overspending by putting our retirement money in an IRS-approved tax shelter. We then avoid tax on the money and the earnings after age 59 ½. We don’t need a lawyer or offshore account to avoid the future taxes and cuts in SS and Medicare. We can rely on our compounded earnings. $3,000 a year goes into the account over time and $1,000,000 comes out tax FREE. We spend it all with no increased taxes. SS benefits get reduced in 2034 so we need a supplement. We avoid paying for the tax breaks for the rich too.

How did you do in 2018?
Our clients use Vanguard funds to maintain a broad diversified portfolio which has provided over 11% total returns for years. 2018 was negative 7.7%--not as bad as some years like 2008 not as good as others like 2013. Since the overall market has produced a steady 10-12% over any 10 year period, we consider it the safest place for our long-term funds. Even in retirement, our clients are counting on equities to maintain a higher return than the alternatives. Above all, we consider low-cost in any investment to be key. Our clients have learned over time that neither moving in and out of the market nor putting money in hot topics has worked out well for them. There is no guarantee for the future but inflation requires more than a bank CD.
