Why are target-date funds so popular?

Is putting off retirement right for you?
A quarter of Baby Boomers plan to postpone their retirement. The virus pandemic has changed a lot of lives and plans. If you start Social Security benefits you cannot go back. Previously this was allowed. This makes your decision all the more important. Many will wait because they do not wish to begin taking retirement money from an IRA or pension now. Studies have shown that doing so can hurt you in later years if you have a big reduction in your nest egg immediately. If you have 30 years in retirement, you don’t want to begin with a bad 1st year. Also, this is one of the worst times to buy an annuity since future benefits are calculated on the current very low interest rate. You could only receive $437 a month for life in return for your $100,000 if you were male age 60. On the other hand, if you had to retire due to job shut down, you could receive $896 a month for 10 years in the hope you would be better situated later. Delaying SS benefits to age 70 provides a much larger monthly income: $3,790 maximum for someone who files at age 70 compared to $2,265 maximum for someone who files at age 62. Maximum benefits require higher incomes for your final 35 years of work. The average benefit is $1,503. Also remember taxes are due on up to 85% of SS benefits if your total income is higher unless you have tax-FREE Roth IRA income.

With the virus passing 4 million, what can you do to save your nest egg?
If there's anything you should expect out of 2020, it's volatility and unpleasant surprises. Most people are checking their account more often and that is a recipe for disaster. Panic selling is what happened in 2007-8. The stock market fell 37%. Some investors think they can avoid the market drop by selling. But your advisor doesn’t know when the market will come back as in 2009-10 with 27% and 15% growth. We can’t control the virus or the market so we must focus on our nest egg end time. A stock market index fund is the only asset class that has proven 11% returns over time. Wealthy investors in hedge funds etc have a really bad record of losses. They can afford to take a chance on alternative assets; we can’t. Warren Buffett, one of the most successful investors, says holding a low-cost stock index fund so we take advantage of compounding earnings is the best way to protect our nest egg, rain or shine. Costs are all we can control.

Is buying the ‘hot’ fund now right for you?
Advisors and young investors try to pick the ETF funds that are rising or will rise during the current conditions. They want to ride the wave to the top. Problem is: momentum trading does not work. Over time, picking the hot security usually results in disappointment. Why? No trend lasts for long. With index funds of all types, the past trends have been changed—watered down. Be wary: past performance is no guarantee of the future; only the hype. The owners of Wall Street firms are great at the hype. What else do they have? They don’t have a predictable product nor a person who has golden hands nor a crystal ball nor a way to control the underlying factors nor a magic wand. All they have to make the sale to you is the B.S., the “story” as my firm’s FCs used to call it.

Why are target-date funds so popular?
Short answer: they use the three best investment strategies available to working people. First, they are usually low cost. This means that over time, you don’t give up over 60% of  your earnings to sellers. Second, they use compounding—the miracle of compounding—earning money on money by itself. Third, they usually hold index funds which can provide 11% earnings from many profitable companies—you are diversified. The added bonus is that as you get closer to retirement, your assets and contributions become less volatile—from 90% stock to 30% stock balance. Unless you are wealthy enough to loose 1/3 of your wealth in a derivative or leveraged hedge fund, this one fund decision is all you need to be a successful investor. It just takes time. Warren Buffett recommends it.

Perfect time to convert part of your IRA to a Roth IRA
If your income and thus taxes will be lower during this pandemic, converting taxable future income to tax-FREE future income may make sense now. If you are over age 59 ½, you can take out IRA money with no penalty—just extra taxes—at lower rates than future years. If your income and tax burden allow it, taking any amount--$10,000, $20,000 even $30,000 from your future retirement account is a smart move now since all the earnings in the future will be tax-FREE. Even if you are in retirement now when you do NOT have to take your 2020 RMD—forced IRA distributions—your tax liability will be less this year so you can afford to take and pay tax on a chunk of your IRA. Because the stock market is still positive, you can convert your stock IRA money to future positive income with no tax in the future. Many advisors see higher taxes in the future (to pay for the Trump tax cuts to the wealthy and virus expenses). You benefit two ways: take advantage of lower current taxes and avoid paying the increase later. You will pay less tax later as you take out smaller traditional IRA distributions AND your future taxable income will be less. Roth IRA balances can accumulate for your whole life without distributions or tax payments. You may be able to avoid income tax on your Social Security benefits too.

How the super wealthy—$100 billion—avoid income tax
Zuckerberg’s net worth just passed $100 billion. Can you write $1,000,000,000 one hundred times? He joins Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates in the clouds. Zuckerberg’s net worth is largely derived from his 13% stake in Facebook. Since these guys and other uber gelt holders do not have to take a salary, they have no taxable income. Think of that! Like the old Robber Baron times, they can sit in their home offices and clip coupons/dividends. Yes it is possible to pay no taxes. Our president claimed that he pays no income taxes too. However, we know he owes a lot so that may be how the wealthy buy things—they live on loans. So Zuck, Jeff, Bill and Don can just text their bank and get a loan every year to pay for maintaining their lifestyles. You don’t pay income taxes on a loan. They also don’t pay for the public services they use—airports, roads, courts, army navy air force. We pay for those on their behalf. Because their companies pay for most of their ‘overhead’ private planes, health insurance, gym, body guards, meals, etc, they don’t need to pay much “out-of-pocket” expense either. We pay for that when we buy stuff.

Financial industry BIG LIE

Financial industry BIG LIE
Many investors still believe their advisor broker or agent charges NOTHING. Among mutual fund investors, 32% believed they do not pay fees or expenses, according to new study. The survey showed that 46% of the participants mistakenly think that the past performance of an investment is a good indicator of future results. Since investing is not taught in school, the only source of information is the industry’s sales people. They have a vested interest in keep us dumb about investing and how they get paid just as doctors don’t tell patients they are paid to push certain drugs. And the industry has convinced us that we have enough information to make good decisions. Sites that offer contrary information about sale of financial products like BrokerCheck or Investor.gov are hardly used. Most investors don’t realize how much they pay for bad advice over their lifetimes. The average investor earned just 3.79% vs 11% from a low-cost market index fund and that over 30 years, they give up 63% of their potential earnings.

Do we really need an advisor now?
‘Next Decade Will Bring the Demise of Hundreds of Advisory Firms.’ This was the topic of one recent advisor conference. The industry has changed. Commissions are lower or $0. Low-cost fund firm Vanguard is growing faster than any other fund firm. Brokerage firms are bought by banks or consolidating. Many firms are eliminating smaller accounts. Their wealthy clients are going into art, private debt, and hard assets. Our life stages have changed and so we will need ‘lifestyle counselors.’ Technology has changed the way we invest and manage our money. We don’t need a sales person to tell us how to make money. Most people understand that costs are important in the long run to retire. Over time, whether we use a 401k or advisor, we waste up to 63% of our total potential accumulations in fees, commissions, trading, timing schemes. Instead, we can answer our own questions of how to invest and manage money.

Are the new leveraged and inverse exchange-traded funds right for you?
Brokerage firms are proposing that the SEC allow them to sell the “riskiest” ETFs. However, some of the ETF industry's most controversial products come with a caveat that could doom them to irrelevance: brokers must document whether investors understand their risks. Since many traders love the potential of huge gains, wirehouses have a huge potential market of buyers. But how will they prove we understand we could lose more than we bet? Leveraged products use derivatives to boost their returns or move in the opposite direction to their benchmarks. While these strategies can mean big bucks, they can also amplify losses, especially for the less experienced ‘players.’ Historically, the average investor earns only 3.79% instead of the market index return of 11% because they lose as much as they gain. As one analyst put it: "Anything new that is coming in at the margins will likely aim for something more esoteric, more gimmicky." These products have been banned for 10 years for a reason. Casinos offer thrills for less.

Our incomes barely budged in 50 years
The average real (after inflation) annual income after taxes and transfers has edged up a meager $8,000 since 1970, rising from just over $19,000 to just over $27,000 in 2018. By contrast, among the top 1 percent of earners, average income even after taxes and transfers has tripled since 1970, rising by more than $800,000, from just over $300,000 to over $1 million in 2018. This is why we can’t afford a decent retirement fund, college for the kids, or even a home, in recent years. The money we earned for the American Dream got sent up the line to the bosses and owners: the top .01 % has increased their incomes nearly sevenfold, from just over $3.5 million to over $24 million. Their taxes went down to 17% while ours went up to 33%. The wealthy have screwed us all and the Dem’s plans to raise taxes on income or wealth will fail just like in the past.

Are the new mobile trading apps right for you?
Apps from Charles Schwab, Wells Fargo and Edward Jones all earned high marks from users relative to the rest of the brokerage industry according to J.D. Power. Our question: do we earn more money by having the ability to trade securities at our finger tips? Fast trading is usually what leads to greater losses over greater gains. With computer trading and order execution by full-time geeks, is it really possible to beat Wall Street workers? Impulse buying is a marketing tool of the grocery industry. Historically most us fail to beat the lowly market index. Warren Buffett recently proved this again. Trading by click could be the equivalent to playing the lottery every week—spend $1,000 win $750.

What is a ‘safe’ investment strategy?
In one day, I received three totally different messages from so-called “professional” Wall Streeters on the future of my investments. It’s no wonder we investors are always paying the WRONG advisor. Thing is, NONE of them know what will happen. When I worked in the industry, the expensive suits on the top floor had to come up with new reasons for our clients to buy or sell every week. As one veteran confessed, “we don’t make any money unless there is activity.” So Citi says stocks. Bloomberg says risks ahead. One says Recession: ‘Get into cash.’ Another says No recession. Whatever your advisor recommends doesn’t matter by next month so the best strategy is to stay in a diversified portfolio like the top 10 from low-cost Vanguard and don’t pay fees for ‘advice’ (guessing is more accurate). Hey, you are the one taking all the risks and paying the fees, charges, commissions.

Convert your IRA to a Roth and leave a TAX FREE legacy
When you take out IRA money after you reach 70 ½ years, you can pay tax as you are required to do and pop the amount up to $7,000 into your Roth IRA with a child or grandchild as beneficiary. It grows Tax FREE until you pass and becomes your legacy without the taxes you, nor they, pay. You can even change the owner later on so this cash build up over the years is not counted in your estate. Since you are forced to take this money out as your RMD each year, you create an estate for them without ANY tax to them: Perfect reminder of your generosity.

Best holiday gift for your young person—lasts a lifetime
Your child or grandchild could have a $2,000,000 Wealth Reserve providing tax-FREE income later in life. Your annual or monthly gift could provide your favorite child with real “social security:” their own tax-FREE money fund. You help them take advantage of the miracle of compounding. Put $250 a month ($3,000 a year) in a low-cost stock index fund earning 11% and watch it explode: moneychimp.com/calculator/compound_interest_calculator.htm. Your gift becomes a $1-2,000,000 Wealth Reserve. You could reduce your taxable estate by up to $500,000 for each child. Your child or grandchild may NEVER have to pay taxes on the money either if you use a Roth IRA. Social Security will exhaust its reserve fund in about 2034, according to 2018 projections. Every year you delay helping them with a gift costs your favorite kid $100,000 later.

Is ‘bundling’ auto and home insurance right for you?
First, since insurance companies like Progressive use this as a marketing tool, you need to check it out for your situation. You know it is a great deal for insurers since they push it. Second, they claim to save you money on the total premium but this can be bad for you. Their ‘bundle’ of policies may not cover what you need. Example: I had an oil tank in the ground for oil-fired steam. When I tried to bundle with my auto, all insurers refused. My home insurer grandfathered my coverage from a previous home and I have over 40 years with them. Third, if you have a lot of claims on your home and a perfect driving record, one ‘rap sheet’ will hurt your total premium. Better look for separate coverage. Fourth, insurers count your credit report with different weights. Bad credit means bad driving and home care behavior to some of them. Shop separately to compare your best deal. Remember that insurers are NOT your friends—they hate paying claims.

Need a graduation gift?

Need a graduation gift?
The greatest gift you can give is financial knowledge. No matter how much your young graduate makes, it is up to YOU to show them the Buffett investment strategy. Make sure they can make and manage money. At my first job, I had no clue which investment to use for my 401k contributions and company match. The HR person told me to put it into the 'safe' stable value fund. That was the worst choice at my age I learned later when I got my securities’ licenses. If I had followed their advice I would have ended up with about $150,000 instead of a Wealth Reserve of $877,233 about 33 years later.

Stock-picking hedge funds are throwing in the towel
With Warren Buffett’s win of a simple strategy over 5 hedge funds, some high-cost managers are giving up. Buffett put a $1 million in the simple Vanguard 500 index in 2008. The five funds of hedge funds Protege picked were up roughly 19.6% compared with the 63.5% for the top 500 index. Lackluster returns and lofty fees charged by hedge funds have prompted investors to head for the exits, and they withdrew $15 billion in the first quarter, according to eVestment data, in a fourth straight quarter of redemptions. Most Wall Street firms are dropping fees in an attempt to maintain their failed business model. John Bogle made it clear: costs matter. Over a 50-year investing lifetime, that little 2% fee will erode 63% of what you would have had. Do the math: if your money earns 10% and you pay 2%, your $3,000 a year retirement contribution will be worth only $2 million; NOT $4.3 million.

Do we have too many options?
Amazon carries an almost infinite variety of stuff. Big box stores are forced to carry more choices and most of us can’t cope. Contemporary internet shopping conjures a perfect storm of choice anxiety. Research has consistently held that people who are presented with a few options make better, easier decisions than those presented with many. This is why we see DISRUPTORS in the consumer commodity space: Casper (mattresses), Glossier (makeup), Away (suitcases), and many others have sprouted up to offer consumers freedom from choice: These firms are selling a confidence in those things, and an ability to opt out of the stuff rat race. This is especially true for financial products. If there are only 10,000 stocks, how come there are 9,356 mutual funds, and 5,024 ETFs. (Less than 1% get HALF of all the money) But which of the 25,000 options should you put your money into? Investors are flocking to Vanguard to pay less; earn more.

Trump’s Socialism: like Putin he picks the firms he likes
Nike, Adidas and 173 shoe firms claim Trump tariffs are killing their business. Tariffs are a tax paid by the importer: ultimately, the consumer, Trump’s economist confessed. Shoes already pay duty so tariffs are double tax industry. Apple watches, flat screen TVs and high chairs all got waivers during the last round of tariffs. 47,000 requests have been submitted on steel and aluminum tariffs. American steelmakers have successfully blocked thousands of waiver applications, with more than half the objections coming from just a handful of big steel producers. So U.S. Steel, Nucor and AK Steel have effectively become an oligopoly. They can control prices since everyone, but them, must pay the tariff tax. The farm welfare goes mainly to the large agribusinesses so they become larger and buy up small family farms. We pay for the Export-They can’t compete on price. Using the 2017 Opportunity Zones tax break, the wealthy can reduce their gains’ taxes to 0%. We can’t do that. We pay for their tax breaks as group, ‘socially.’

Despite DEM talk, wealth gap will become larger
The rich benefit from a rising stock market. They have doubled their wealth since 2012 just by letting their money alone. The richest people have increased their share of stock ownership over the last 30 years. 1% of households now own 50% of all household equities, up from 39% in the late 1980s. Just over half of Americans own stocks. Two-thirds of Americans do not even participate in or have access to a 401(k) plan, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Working people, whose income has remained the same since the 1970s (inflation-adjusted), can’t afford to save and invest. Trump promised his tax cut was for workers, but corporations are giving it to stockholders. Even with everyone in the household working when they can, the cost of living does not allow for a savings/ investing plan. Most do not know about the Miracle of Compounding and a tax-free account. These strategies could help most people have enough in retirement.

Why your broker/advisor called the market move wrong
When the markets took a break from historic long bull at the end of 2018, many so called ‘professionals’ sent their money to fixed vehicles. Of course, then the bulls continued to run despite the various ‘signals’ sent from Washington. We don’t ever learn: none of these people can predict the future—they’re salespeople. That was my first lesson at my brokerage firm in 1987. So you missed another 12% gain. So what if the market swings wildly from day to day. If you can’t stand it then don’t—spread your money around—don’t follow their advice. You know down deep that they are not going to be right most of the time. Accept the returns of a diversified portfolio knowing that every sector has its day in the sun. Pick a balanced fund like Wellesley Income and just hold it for 9.69% since 1970 or buy BRK for 20%. Boring, yes; but profitably steady.

What do you do when the market falls?

What do you do when the market falls?
Sell or stay the course? Why do the non-commission advisors like Warren Buffett tell us not to panic when the market declines? Why do the smart investors use the decline to BUY, not sell? The only reason is they have the experience of seeing the losers after they sell. Here is what I do, even in retirement: I look at the past market behavior-- http://www.moneychimp.com/features/market_cagr.htm. 2008=-37%, 2009=+27%, 2010=+15%; 2002=-22, 2003=+29; 1974=-27, 1975=+38, 1976=+24. Notice that when it falls, it rises. If that is not convincing you, look at the actual average earnings for advisor-assisted investors compared to the unassisted stock index fund: 3.79% vs 11%. Earning 11% a year (index accounts cost 0.04 % or less) over time beats 92.2% of the advisors and brokers unless they have illegal insider information. I use ‘perspective’: 2018 Jan 2=271; Dec 6=271 plus dividends. Last year I gained 22% tax free.

Is your ‘retirement’ account really an ATM?
Most (59%) of investors ages 18 to 34 say they already have taken money from their retirement accounts according to a survey. Yet most believe they will have enough to enjoy their retirement. Not long ago, only 31% had raided their future nest egg. What happens when our 401k or 403b is used as an ATM? The compounding effect is destroyed. Compounding is the effect of making money on our existing money without adding more. Invest $250 a month, $3000 a year for 33 years ($99,000) and compounding produces about $1,000,000: $900,000 was from compounding. When we interrupt the growth—just 5 years—by stopping the flow and ALSO reversing savings, we lose about HALF the final total.

Wages are up 3.7% Who is getting the raises?
The unemployment rate is now at 3.7%, the lowest since 1969. On a yearly basis, wages and salaries jumped 3.1%, the biggest increase in 10 years. But, which groups are getting the lion’s share of the increases? Corporate CEOs and upper management seem to have taken more than their share—perhaps from the corporate tax cuts. Most line workers seem to have given up more than they got—they will pay for the corporate tax cuts. The highest-rated employees earned 4.6% in raises in 2018, compared to the 2.7% average raise given to employees with an average rating. Although minimum wages were raised in some states, the big increases went to a few. Clothing manufacturing wages jumped 14% with only 116,000 workers. Refiners of petroleum and coal with 115,000 jobs saw the 2nd highest raises. Data miners are in demand. So most of the wage increase of 3.7% was for a sliver of very skilled workers and their bosses. CEO's have seen a 937% increase in earnings since 1978: Workers saw 11.2% during the same time. "CEOs are getting more because of their power to set pay, not because they are more productive or have special talent or have more education," says one report. Given cuts in corporate and wealthy taxes, paying for the narrow group of raises will fall to the working class only.

Do you need a REAL middle-income tax break?
The REAL tax break from the GOP and Trump is the removal of the income cap on conversions from traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs. The 1.6% income increase for the average household earning $50,000 to $75,000 has been eaten up by tariffs and health care costs. Compare the $thousands you save in taxes during retirement when most of your income is tax-FREE and you no longer have to take taxable RMDs from your IRAs. For many, the elimination of tax on IRA distributions means their income can continue to grow after age 70 ½ AND they will pay less tax or nothing on their SS benefits.

Advisor’s plan for your retirement spending is impossible
The average spending for households headed by 55- to 64-year-olds was $65,000 in 2017, according to its Consumer Expenditure Survey. Spending dropped to $55,000 between ages 65 and 74, and after that it fell to $42,000. Housing costs remained steady and health care expenses increased, but nearly every other category — transportation, entertainment, clothing, food and drink — declined sharply. Retirement is NOT a fixed expense so putting all your money into an annuity or other fixed income vehicle is absurd. We all need flexibility unless we are going to watch TV for the rest of our lives. Advisors used to get off easy by telling us to take 4% a year. They were just lazy—it takes work to know how much to spend in the future. Chase bank created 4 profiles: homebodies, globe-trotters, health care spenders and foodies. Most advisors build inflation escalators into their financial plans but the data shows otherwise. For some, the huge bump comes with unexpected health care expenses. On the other hand, you should make that great trip or other retirement dream while you are able. Plan for flexibility!

Are trusts to avoid $10K cap on property tax right for you?
Wealthy folks in CA, CT, NJ, and NY are using trusts to hold their properties so they can avoid the cap of $10,000 on property tax set by Trump’s new tax bill. Those who previously deducted $50,000 or more for property taxes are moving ownership of their holdings to Alaska, where the tax is $0. Building and administering the trusts could cost about $20,000 plus you have to put investment assets in the trust that will generate enough income to balance out the $10,000 deduction. So this option will not work out for most taxpayers in the affected states. They will carry the load for the wealthy again. With a $20,000 property tax bill, the average homeowner will need to pay a larger chunk to cover Trump’s tax breaks for the rich.

Another way the wealthy avoid paying their fair share of tax
Feds just charged 4 people with helping the wealthy avoid US taxes using a law firm in Panama. The charges come from journalists getting records from the Panama Papers. One method: lawyers set up a fake investment into which a rich person could get the money out of the country. Then lawyers created a paper loss so the transaction could be called a non-taxable loss. The original money could then be returned to the US without a taxable event reported to the IRS. The rich could then use the untaxed money to buy a hard asset like a mansion with no questions asked.

This is how Jared avoids his fair share of taxes
Like papa, Jared uses other people’s money to buy commercial real estate. He pays himself well to run the business at a loss created from using the 'virtual' expense of building use and aging called depreciation. The losses mount up over the years and are added to this year’s loss. He earns $millions but never pays tax. We taxpayers actually give him a refund. Here’s an example from 2015. W-2 income: $198,000. Taxable interest: $536,000. Dividends: $1,000. Capital gains: $974,000. Deductions: Tax losses from real estate and other partnerships: $3.5 million. Tax losses carried forward from previous years: $4.8 million. Total adjusted gross income: Negative $6.6 million. Tax refund $4,000. A new Jared property just so happens to be located on one of papa’s US Opportunity Zones for another tax subsidy in Jared’s future.
