What does spending look like in retirement?

What to buy in a bear market

If you are holding a broad-market balanced set of assets, like Vanguard’s Wellesley Income Fund, you have seen the results of a bear market before. Living through economic hard times makes you appreciate owning a little of everything because you learned your lesson before. Market timing and stock speculation don’t work. Very few ‘professional’ investors have been successful. Patient investors always are better off in the long run. No segment or sector will save you all the time. Even those that have fallen far Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Nvidia—have not given up their special value proposition. Everyone I know is still using their products and services. So it is unlikely that a bear will eat the next bull. What some investors lack is patience. Warren’s maxim: The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient. 1/3rd of the assets of millionaires are held in either cash or bonds: 53% are stock assets. Remember, you got through the 2007-8 chaos and still earned 12.49% a year. Your holding period could be forever.

What does spending look like in retirement?

As you face retirement, what will you buy in retirement? Only 4% of retirees are debt free: most carry credit card debt, mortgage, and car loans. 25% of workers over age 40 have no savings. Most people don’t change their habits much—housing, food, transport, health care, utilities, fun. Most retirees average $52,141 a year. By comparison, the average across all households is $66,928. You won’t need work clothes or commutation to work. You won’t need to keep up your tax-deferred savings/investing plan at work. Health care may take more as you get older. Counting your retirement income sources may help you define the limits of retirement spending. There are expensive loans from the equity in your home. Taking a smaller place in a cheaper town may be another option. Planning in advance can make your retirement much more pleasant. That’s how folks create a comfortable retirement.

Congress to increase the amount we can save tax-advantaged

Congress may increase the catch-up contribution amounts since many workers stopped investing for retirement during the pandemic. New legislation would increase the catch-up contribution limit to $10,000 for older workers contributing to 401(k), 403(b), and governmental 457(b) plans and up to $5,000 to SIMPLE IRA or SIMPLE 401(k) plans. As Americans work and live longer, they need more options for when they begin drawing down retirement savings. This reform gives retirees flexibility and choice by raising the required minimum distribution age from 72 to 75. This change will help many Americans address concerns that they will outlive their retirement savings. The SECURE Act 2.0 would increase the start-up cost tax credit for small businesses to establish retirement plans for employees — and the House-passed version of SECURE 2.0 provides a meaningful new credit for small-employer contributions up to $1,000 per employee. You can save tax-deferred or tax-free.

Are online automated advisor search programs right for you?

There are no-cost online services that make it “easier than ever to find trustworthy financial advisers in your area.” SmartAsset is an example. After filling out a short questionnaire, you are provided with the names of local financial advisers. Some are working for a brokerage firm and some for an insurance company. The questions include how much “investable assets” you have. This is a clue as to the kind of advisor you are likely to be presented with. Some require you to have over $1 million in assets. Most can provide you with sound money management help. ‘Fiduciaries’ are advertised as providing products in your ‘best interest.’ However, if your goal is an unbiased financial plan, you must find a fee-only advisor. Look for one that has a CFP® after their name. They charge a fixed fee because they don’t live on commissions and ongoing fees as advisors do. The list is at their site: https://www.napfa.org/. If you are facing a divorce or change in asset structure, look for a specialist CDFA https://institutedfa.com/find-a-cdfa/. Make sure you know what you want from an advisor since there are many specialists in the field. And be sure to check out their ‘rap sheet’ before you give them your money.

Why are TDF the right choice for most savers/investors?

Target Date Funds allow us to do the job of money management at the least cost. And cost is the BEST predictor of success in investing. Many TDF providers increased growth asset exposure to help address shortfall and longevity risk. This follows a similar trend displayed over the last 10 years, a time period that saw low expected returns from other asset classes such as fixed income. For example, the allocation to growth assets at age 25 increased from 89% in 2012 to 93% in 2021, and subsequently to 94% in 2022. Because of the low interest rates of years past, providers have increase credit risk within the fixed income allocation at these stages. Some providers have increased exposure to inflation-sensitive assets, most notably late in the glidepath years. TDF providers have responded to the changes in rates and growth factors to manage our money responsibly.

Cost is more important than market timing: https://www.amazon.com/Best-Predictor-Investment-Success-Cost/dp/1502524082

What can you control in retirement if you plan ahead?

Don’t switch to fixed income assets too quickly. You might live another 30 years and bonds or an annuity just won’t cut it. Fixed income assets lose income value over time. Your tax-deferred accounts (IRA and pension) require you to take a fixed amount out each year so you can’t stop that income tax. You can hold stocks and bonds longer since you control when asset gains get taxed. Social Security benefits can be delayed indefinitely if you are still working but your benefits stop growing by age 70. When you reach age 70, your monthly benefit stops increasing even if you continue to delay taking benefits. Securing enough health insurance is in your control since there are many plans that fill in the gaps in Medicare. Depending on where you live and get care, Medicare Advantage or Supplements can cover many needs. Finally, if you have saved enough for a long retirement, you can control your expenses so life is good. 4/5 of us have no written financial plan for retirement so when things go wrong, it’s a disaster.

How to keep your nest egg producing income

There is one proven method of making sure you have enough income throughout your WHOLE retirement. Instead of spending down your $500,000 nest egg—creating an income of $16,666 a year for 30 years—spend only your earnings. $500,000 invested in a low-cost balanced portfolio can provide $30,000 plus COLA a year for as long as you live. As you get older you can spend more than $30,000 a year as you spend some of your principal. How can that work? https://investor.vanguard.com/tools-calculators/retirement-income-calculator This calculator can estimate your retirement income from a nest egg of $500,000 earning 6% and a SS benefit of $1,544 a month or $18,528 in your first year (at current SS levels). Annuity income is usually fixed for 30 years so your allotment will be more at the beginning $3,198 but falls in buying power over time. Since you give up the principal to the insurance company, you may lose money if you die early. Many folks like to have their money for final expenses, emergencies and a legacy.

Is direct indexing right for you?

The hot topic for fund managers is “direct indexing.” “Direct indexing, which allows investors to replicate an index by selecting and buying its components, is still a novel concept for many wealth managers.” Not really! This is a putting stock picking into an ‘indexing’ wrap account. More FEES should be the real name. Financial CEOs are averaging $23.2 million in 2021, a 29.4% increase from the previous year. Some money managers call this “Custom Separately Managed Accounts (SMAs), available now for select wealth management firms and institutions.” Firms will “build and manage equity portfolios customized to investors’ needs and preferences.” In other words, you tell them which stocks to pick for you for a FEE. You can have them “tailor” it or “overlay” it to incorporate personal values.” Sounds like trick name ‘indexing’ but stock picking at a higher cost. You pay for the $23.2 million, plus your advisor fees, charge, etc.

Try Warren Buffett as advisor: https://www.amazon.com/Warren-Buffett-Your-Investment-Advisor/dp/1518690963

Regrets from retirees

When you are finally retired, the major complaints come down to lack of planning with a professional planner. You may plan to invest aggressively. You may not realize the full cost of housing—rents or maintenance. Retirees overestimate their SS benefits. You don’t bother to nail down your income amounts. Ignoring health care costs not covered by Medicare. You plan to earn more on your investments than actually happens. Some folks are too conservative in the way they invest during retirement. You don’t realize how long you will need income. Inflation of just 3% will reduce your money buying power by HALF. You have to pay taxes on tax-deferred accounts (RMD), pensions, and even SS benefits.

Cutting recurring costs can save you a fortune

Can you take out 10% of your nest egg each year?

Some baby Boomers think their advisors would recommend this amount to be withdrawn each year in retirement. “Today’s low yields on bonds and high equity valuations mean ‘retirees are unlikely to receive returns that match those of the past,’ Morningstar says.” Fidelity said that over the timeframe of about one century, a 4.5% withdrawal rate would have lasted throughout a 30-year retirement in about 90% of the periods analyzed. Because that is an average, you must consider your specific situation before assuming you can spend 4.5% each year. Low earnings, inflation, your health and your family longevity must be factored into your best case scenario. If the bulk of your retirement funds are in qualified accounts (traditional IRA), your mutual fund or brokerage firm uses the IRS RMD worksheet to do the calculation for you. Their tables use an average withdrawal rate of less than 4% of your previous year’s combined total qualified funds amount each year. Thus, if your investments shrank, your RMD amount will be lower. You need to learn the factors that change your prudent annual spending amount.

Help your child, grandchild get started on a $1 million fund

They will need a million dollars since inflation can reduce the buying power by 50% in just 20 years. Since common stocks have the best history of keeping ahead of inflation, a broad portfolio has the best chance of delivering steady returns. Since 1871 a basket of stocks (dividends reinvested) has provided 11% returns. Ordinary inflation is 3% not 8.6%, so right now stocks are cheap. If you show your family that an 11% long-term return can turn $250 a month into $1,000,000 in about 34 years, they will not be try to beat the market with fast trades through a $0 commission broker. Show them the math: $250 per month for 34 years costs $102,000 in contributions. They earn $898,000 in dividends and capital gains. If they use their special IRS tax-FREE account, they avoid about $225,000 in taxes when they take their money out to live on. Remind them that Warren Buffett bet a million dollars on a low-cost market index fund to beat 5 super stock pickers. Buffett recommends you use the Vanguard 500 Index Fund. Why? You can give up 63% of your returns when you use a broker. And if they trade to beat the market they may end up with the historical broker account average of 3.79% not 11% a year. That’s $208,865 instead of $1,021,768 after 34 years.

Quickest ways to save $3,000 a year

The Federal Reserve's 2019 Survey of Consumer Finances (released in 2020) found that the average, or mean, account was just over $255,000. The average cost of using an advisor or broker was 1.5% a year or $3,825. Since most financial sales people can NOT guarantee higher performance than the actual markets, most of us are better off leaving our money in a low-cost index account. Managed accounts earn only 3.79% vs 11% for an index account. For specific money management solutions, a one-time fee-only planner provides better advice since it is unbiased. Moving accounts is easier since a trustee to trustee transfer is usually free and not a taxable event. Another way to save $3,000 a year is canceling a loan to the US government. The average tax refund was $3,304. You will not incur a penalty if you owe less than $500 each year. So if you reduce your paycheck withholding by $250 a month, $125 a pay period, you will be able to increase your investment account by $250 a month. This creates $3,000 a year or about $200,000 extra in your investment account in 20 years.

https://www.amazon.com/New-American-Retirement-System-Reserve/dp/1461030072

Cutting recurring costs can save you a fortune

During this period of high inflation, it is important to note how much certain expenses really cost. Just as I noted above, saving $3,000 a year on your money management can really put huge amounts into your account. One reader was paying 2% of their nest egg each year for their advisor to check their statement quarterly. They moved their money to Vanguard and accumulated an extra $350,000 during their pre-retirement years. They were not only giving away 2% a year, they were losing the gains from that money. This “tyranny of compounding costs” applies to all of our recurring costs. We used to pay extra insurance premium for collision coverage on all our vehicles. We paid $ hundreds year after year until we realized our coverage would NOT pay enough to repair our older cars. This fact led us to take our policy apart so we paid only for the liability required by law. We did not need standard mileage, collision, comprehensive, gap, towing, temporary rental, health care, disability, accidental death, dismemberment, personal injury protection (PIP) and uninsured motorist coverage (UM). We then went through all expenses—cable, internet, life insurance, periodicals, etc to find more savings.

Save big: https://www.amazon.com/Get-What-You-Pay-financial/dp/1492384100

Another way the wealthy avoid taxes we can’t

One of the easiest ways the super rich can avoid taxes is by having the assets they donate to a tax exempt organization appraised for very very high amounts. Today Trump’s favorite property appraiser was asked to stop holding up the investigation by the New York Attorney General. Trump took a $21 million tax deductions on his tax returns by having his appraiser value the forest in front of his mansion in upstate New York so high: it’s impossible by law. Our Congress people let folks like themselves reduce their taxes by claiming a deduction for their $million gifts. They give art, land, houses that they have appraised at future or improbable values. Trump promised he would not develop the forest on his property in his retirement years. That development is not possible. This is one reason Trump is under investigation. His appraiser based the value of his property on the possibility that 24 mansions would be built and sold. Local officials have laws against such a venture. Rich people in the area don’t want the ‘low-life’ crowding the back roads and markets. So if the appraisal was faked, Trump will owe New York and USA millions of dollars. Trump’s lawyers may delay paying for years. He may end the IRS probe in 2024. Meanwhile, don’t pay the shortfall for the rich.

How much are you investing for your future?

How much are you investing for your future?

Fidelity says: The total first-quarter savings rate — a combination of participant and employer — reached a record 14%, just short of Fidelity’s suggested 15% savings rate. The average salary is about $50,000. During our lifetime, we may earn $2.5-$3 million, depending on raises and years worked. If we invest just 6% ($3,000) in the low-cost stock market index of our 401k or IRA, we could have $2,100,000 for retirement in 40 years. If our employer matches our contribution or our spouse has a similar situation, we could have more. Given the historical rate of inflation, this amount would still allow us to spend retirement income of $45,000 (after inflation) for 30 years. We can now invest in a Tax-FREE account, approved by the IRS. About 78% of 401k plans offer this account. We could spend all $3,750 a month!

Median means half are below that amount: 27% reported an income of less than $25,000. Transamerica found that 46% of retiree households have nonmortgage debt, such as credit card, car loan, student loan or medical obligations. In addition, 23% of households have mortgage debt. Another study shows that 57% of retirees said they had less than $250,000 saved at retirement. This study had participants with incomes of $75,000. Amazingly, thirty-five percent hope to win the lottery, 25% are willing to sacrifice what they want today to save for later years and 25% plan to stay on their current path. Forty-four percent of retirees said their expenses are higher than they had expected, while just 8% said expenses are lower. Most of us will have to work longer than age 65.

Best graduation gift you can give

Make sure you teach your kids how to create wealth the easy way. My parents were not investors. At my first job, I had no clue which investment option to use for my 401k contribution and company match. The HR person told me to put it into the 'safe' stable value fund. That was the worst choice at my age I learned later when I got my securities licenses. If I had followed their advice I would have ended up with $150,000 instead of a Wealth Reserve of $877,233 about 33 years later. We have used this 'Wealth Reserve' as I call it to have funds to use low-cost high-deductible insurance, to buy two homes and 5 cars with higher down payments or cash, and now to receive at least $2,933 a monthly in a retirement supplement for the rest of our lives. Get them started with VOO in a Tax-Free account at low-cost Vanguard.

In a recession, follow Buffett’s advice

Warren Buffett has been through a few recessions since investing his paper route money. His advice is not to sell all and run for the hills. Page 6 of his letter to shareholders: “Investors who avoid high and unnecessary costs and simply sit for an extended period with a collection of large, conservatively-financed American businesses will almost certainly do well.” Unless you need your emergency money in the next year, just hold on to your low-cost portfolio of sound businesses and wait. As a group, American firms have provided annual earnings of about 11% since 1871. At 11% through boom and bust, steady investments of $250 a month can produce $1,000,000 in about 33 years. Stocks are cheaper during recessions to you have more; less when they are more expensive.

In retirement, how much of your nest egg should you spend each month?

According to a new survey, a large share of near-retirees thinks they can safely withdraw 10% or more of their savings annually. This suggests that millions of people may be in for a shock. The average nest egg amount is only $172,000. Given this, a 10% withdrawal rate or $17,000 will end retirement income in 30 years with $3,500 in your final year. There are many factors that determine how much you will NEED in retirement but my readers say that they are spending MORE than they anticipated during their leisure years. Without a formal plan of estimating income and spending, you may be in for a difficult future. One thing each of my readers tells me is that they wish they had invested more aggressively early on. They were mislead by an advisor who did NOT try to match their age to their risk tolerance: stock funds early.

Another way the wealthy hide their assets

Property in Manhattan linked to now-sanctioned Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska was held using a Delaware LLC. An LLC is a Limited Liability Company. It can be set up with very little information about the owners—another LLC or trust could be the ‘managing member’ on the registration. Financial secrecy in the US, which was called the most complicit country in helping individuals hide wealth this week by the Tax Justice Network, an advocacy group for tax fairness, is finally being challenged by some states. “People are shocked to learn about this loophole in the law that allows purchasers to go undetected,” said New York State Senator Brad Hoylman, a Democrat who sponsored a bill heading to the floor of the legislature. “Certainly, the focus on the international super-rich who have propped up the Putin regime has rekindled interest in the effort.” The invasion of Ukraine has raised concerns from London to New York about how anonymous shell companies complicate tax enforcement. One of the most well-known users of this technique is our former president. Assets and income are hidden in hundreds of LLCs so he pays almost nothing in taxes. His business dealings are kept secret through LLCs. Using shells, he claimed he personally ‘lost’ (on paper) almost a $ Billion, thus reducing his taxes for “almost two decades.”

Are “inflation-protection” securities right for you?
These funds are designed to protect investors from the eroding effect of inflation by investing primarily in securities that seek to provide a “real” return. The funds focus on investments in inflation-protected bonds that are backed by the full faith and credit of the federal government and whose principal is adjusted based on inflation. These funds have moderate to high interest rate risk, meaning that changes in interest rates, both up and down, can affect the fund by resulting in lower bond prices or an eventual decrease in income. Average annual returns have been 5% since 2000 but down 6% year to date. The bonds have 7 year duration so these bonds don’t protect you from changes in value. When interest rates rise, bonds lose value. However, over time you are protected from long periods of high inflation. Owning stocks are another way to protect yourself from inflation in the long run. Consider your time horizon and income needs before buying these fixed rate bonds.

Everything in universe: galaxies to stones made of subatomic energy ‘vibrations’

Light is both a particle and a wave depending on how we look at the light.

A subatomic ‘particle’ is the smallest possible vibration (quantum) of a quantum field.

Mass–energy equivalence: E=mc^2.  At the smallest level; Everything is moving!

Inside protons, neutrons, it is the fields of the virtual particles that creates its mass.

“Empty space is a boiling, bubbling brew of virtual particles that pop in and out of existence in a time scale so short that you can’t even measure them.” Space expanding.
