Cutting recurring costs can save you a fortune

Can you take out 10% of your nest egg each year?

Some baby Boomers think their advisors would recommend this amount to be withdrawn each year in retirement. “Today’s low yields on bonds and high equity valuations mean ‘retirees are unlikely to receive returns that match those of the past,’ Morningstar says.” Fidelity said that over the timeframe of about one century, a 4.5% withdrawal rate would have lasted throughout a 30-year retirement in about 90% of the periods analyzed. Because that is an average, you must consider your specific situation before assuming you can spend 4.5% each year. Low earnings, inflation, your health and your family longevity must be factored into your best case scenario. If the bulk of your retirement funds are in qualified accounts (traditional IRA), your mutual fund or brokerage firm uses the IRS RMD worksheet to do the calculation for you. Their tables use an average withdrawal rate of less than 4% of your previous year’s combined total qualified funds amount each year. Thus, if your investments shrank, your RMD amount will be lower. You need to learn the factors that change your prudent annual spending amount.

Help your child, grandchild get started on a $1 million fund

They will need a million dollars since inflation can reduce the buying power by 50% in just 20 years. Since common stocks have the best history of keeping ahead of inflation, a broad portfolio has the best chance of delivering steady returns. Since 1871 a basket of stocks (dividends reinvested) has provided 11% returns. Ordinary inflation is 3% not 8.6%, so right now stocks are cheap. If you show your family that an 11% long-term return can turn $250 a month into $1,000,000 in about 34 years, they will not be try to beat the market with fast trades through a $0 commission broker. Show them the math: $250 per month for 34 years costs $102,000 in contributions. They earn $898,000 in dividends and capital gains. If they use their special IRS tax-FREE account, they avoid about $225,000 in taxes when they take their money out to live on. Remind them that Warren Buffett bet a million dollars on a low-cost market index fund to beat 5 super stock pickers. Buffett recommends you use the Vanguard 500 Index Fund. Why? You can give up 63% of your returns when you use a broker. And if they trade to beat the market they may end up with the historical broker account average of 3.79% not 11% a year. That’s $208,865 instead of $1,021,768 after 34 years.

Quickest ways to save $3,000 a year

The Federal Reserve's 2019 Survey of Consumer Finances (released in 2020) found that the average, or mean, account was just over $255,000. The average cost of using an advisor or broker was 1.5% a year or $3,825. Since most financial sales people can NOT guarantee higher performance than the actual markets, most of us are better off leaving our money in a low-cost index account. Managed accounts earn only 3.79% vs 11% for an index account. For specific money management solutions, a one-time fee-only planner provides better advice since it is unbiased. Moving accounts is easier since a trustee to trustee transfer is usually free and not a taxable event. Another way to save $3,000 a year is canceling a loan to the US government. The average tax refund was $3,304. You will not incur a penalty if you owe less than $500 each year. So if you reduce your paycheck withholding by $250 a month, $125 a pay period, you will be able to increase your investment account by $250 a month. This creates $3,000 a year or about $200,000 extra in your investment account in 20 years.

Cutting recurring costs can save you a fortune

During this period of high inflation, it is important to note how much certain expenses really cost. Just as I noted above, saving $3,000 a year on your money management can really put huge amounts into your account. One reader was paying 2% of their nest egg each year for their advisor to check their statement quarterly. They moved their money to Vanguard and accumulated an extra $350,000 during their pre-retirement years. They were not only giving away 2% a year, they were losing the gains from that money. This “tyranny of compounding costs” applies to all of our recurring costs. We used to pay extra insurance premium for collision coverage on all our vehicles. We paid $ hundreds year after year until we realized our coverage would NOT pay enough to repair our older cars. This fact led us to take our policy apart so we paid only for the liability required by law. We did not need standard mileage, collision, comprehensive, gap, towing, temporary rental, health care, disability, accidental death, dismemberment, personal injury protection (PIP) and uninsured motorist coverage (UM). We then went through all expenses—cable, internet, life insurance, periodicals, etc to find more savings.

Another way the wealthy avoid taxes we can’t

One of the easiest ways the super rich can avoid taxes is by having the assets they donate to a tax exempt organization appraised for very very high amounts. Today Trump’s favorite property appraiser was asked to stop holding up the investigation by the New York Attorney General. Trump took a $21 million tax deductions on his tax returns by having his appraiser value the forest in front of his mansion in upstate New York so high: it’s impossible by law. Our Congress people let folks like themselves reduce their taxes by claiming a deduction for their $million gifts. They give art, land, houses that they have appraised at future or improbable values. Trump promised he would not develop the forest on his property in his retirement years. That development is not possible. This is one reason Trump is under investigation. His appraiser based the value of his property on the possibility that 24 mansions would be built and sold. Local officials have laws against such a venture. Rich people in the area don’t want the ‘low-life’ crowding the back roads and markets. So if the appraisal was faked, Trump will owe New York and USA millions of dollars. Trump’s lawyers may delay paying for years. He may end the IRS probe in 2024. Meanwhile, don’t pay the shortfall for the rich.

Make your grandchild a millionaire

Make your grandchild a millionaire

If you are wealthy or they have time to accumulate wealth, you can help them have enough money to do what they really want to do. 1st case: give each grandchild $15,000 a year with no gift tax. A custody or cash account with your stock mutual fund can become a $million in 20 years. 2nd case: give each grandchild $250 a month using automatic investment from your bank account. A custody or cash account with your stock mutual fund can become a $million in 35 years. If they convert their account to a Roth IRA the account earnings will become tax-FREE when they take the money out.

Can Congress complete the Social Security stabilization for us?

The SS Trustees Report says that we will have our SS benefits cut by 25% in 2034—just 12 years away. Congress has trouble understanding it takes time to accumulate the funds that will provide the benefits. Reason: most are multimillionairs and won’t need benefits. Wealthy members don’t want to think about taxes. Some don’t even realize that global warming is reducing their $ billions of assets. However, if we are to survive in retirement, we need to convince the split Congress that Americans agree on THREE things: ensuring Social Security cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) are enough to, at minimum, keep up with inflation; reinstating Social Security payroll taxes on people earning more than $400,000 per year; and providing a Social Security credit to unpaid caregivers. Because Congress may not agree in time to correct the situation, prudent folks must take action.

Are stock dividends the best way to create retirement income?

Some advisors are convinced that stock dividends are the best way to fund our retirement. Few stocks pay over 3% in dividends. At $6 a year, owners of 3M for instance, must own 5,000 shares at $194 a share or about $1,000,000. Luckily, dividends are taxed at lower rates than income from 401k or IRA funds. However, we may do better by owning non-dividend shares like those in the S&P 500 that we can sell as needed with fewer taxes. Also, with inflation returning to the historical 3%, a dividend yield of 3% may actually be losing us long-term buying power. Stocks returns beat inflation. The other benefit of owning non-dividend stocks is that we can sell when the price and tax benefits are greatest. If we have other retirement income like taxable 401k and IRA money, we can postpone selling stock for income. We may have periods when we can convert the taxable money to tax-FREE money and thus lower our tax burden over time. We may need a one-time fee-only planner to help us create tax-FREE retirement income.

$10,000 annual fee

Do you realize that is the amount you are paying your advisor every year? If your portfolio is $500,000 and your expense fees and charges and 12b-1 and trading costs and timing mistakes total up to 2% each year, you could be falling behind your ultimate goal in a big way. Year after year with most costs hidden in quarterly statements and prospectus, you can lose up to 50% of your possible accumulation because of the compounding of costs. Compare your account balance to the account balance if you were using a 0.04% stock market index fund. DALBAR returns tracker says the difference can be 7%--3.79%vs11.06%. If your assets earn more than 2% and you pay 2% TOTAL costs, you lose a year of earnings if there are any. If the market falls, you lose more since there are no refunds if advisors fail to better the stock market index. For most advisors, if their market picks fail, they will increase trading costs to try to avoid a loss. This just makes matters worse. But by the time you see the loss or lack of gain, that period is over and there is nothing you can do. You could move your assets to the Best Robo available.

Another way the wealthy avoid taxes

Trial lawyers haul their mass tort winnings to tax-haven Puerto Rico

And you wonder who will pay off the skyrocketing National Debt of $28 Trillions. These lawyers, who get the lion’s share of the opioid death settlement, are moving outside the US to avoid taxes on their $2 Billion fees. This “self-described West Virginia hillbilly” did not move his family so you know he is purposefully violating the law: “If you’re a lawyer in San Juan sitting behind a computer screen, you pay zero state and federal income taxes.” You may not be ready to leave your family and friends and move your office to PR so what can you do to avoid paying THEIR share of the $28 Trillion? You can avoid some of your income taxes by using deductions from your business activities like the former president does, but that takes time and money to set up. An immediate way is to take advantage of the current legal IRS-approved retirement accounts.

Start today: https://www.amazon.com/New-American-Retirement-System-ReserveTM/dp/1461030072

61% of households paid no federal income taxes in 2020

Are you one of the few who paid taxes last year? Households making less than about $28,000 will not owe income taxes this year, nor will about three-quarters of families earning between $28,000 and $55,000, the Tax Policy Center found. That means if you earn over about $22.47 an hour, you will owe the IRS in 2021. Congress is so divided politically; few expect the new taxes needed to cover our spending and debt interest will show up before year end. Long vacations add to the problem. Increased corporate taxes and changes in capital gains tax rates are likely to be debated for months. It is not clear whether Congress will even give the IRS the funds to collect taxes owed by the wealthy. Will middle-class families in high property-tax states ever get to deduct them fully? Will Biden be able to protect small business as Biden promised? You and small businesses don’t have access to the army of lawyers and accountants that allowed 55 profitable large corporations to avoid paying any federal corporate taxes in 2020. They cannot shift profits into tax havens to avoid paying U.S. taxes like multinational corporations can.

Let compounding build your child’s future

Where to invest for the coming Year of the Vaccines?

No one knows what will happen in 2021. Every advisor in town has an opinion—either from their firm’s analysts or their favorite wholesaler—but they don’t know. So should you keep paying them a quarterly fee of 1-2%? You could lose up to 62% of your total possible nest egg that way. Or you could go with the best advice master-investor Warren Buffett offers. You could double your money in 10-12 years. Buffett’s advice is different because he doesn’t take your money. He’s different because he knows he doesn’t know. His strategy is pretty simple. First, invest in a broad market index fund like the Vanguard 500 Index. He even recommends it for retirement investing. Second, use a low-cost fund like those run by Vanguard which has no outside owner. Third, don’t try to out guess the market by trading ETFs or individual stocks or sectors. They are easy to trade but that assumes you know what will happen. You and millions of ‘professional’ traders don’t know. Get used to the uncertainty. All we really know is that the 500 stock index has outperformed other assets over time: 11% a year on average. It does better leaving your money alone. Fourth, Buffett credits compounding for his success: buy and hold. If you are new to index investing, give it a chance with only 10% of your retirement money.

Earn more by paying less. https://www.amazon.com/Warren-Buffett-Your-Investment-Advisor/dp/1518690963

Will you have enough retirement income?

You can afford retirement starting now. There are a few rules to follow but in time you will have enough. If you start now, using low-cost stock index funds inside a tax-FREE account, you can make it. There are easy ways to track your progress that paid advisors use that you have access to also. Over time, you can have enough saved to live well. How much can you accumulate in your investment account? Answer: $1 million at $250/mo; $3,000/yr; 35 years. Track progress here: https://investor.vanguard.com/calculator-tools/retirement-income-calculator. Don’t panic: expect your low-cost stock index fund like the Vanguard 500 Index to go up and down: a +31% and a -37%: average +11%.

Start now: https://www.amazon.com/You-Can-Afford-Retirement-FEE-FREE/dp/1517738253

Let compounding build your child’s future

Make sure you teach your kids how to create wealth the easy way. My parents were not investors. At my first job, I had no clue which investment option to use for my 401k contribution and company match. The HR person told me to put it into the 'safe' stable value fund. That was the worst choice at my age I learned later when I got my securities licenses. If I had followed their advice I would have ended up with $150,000 instead of a Wealth Reserve of $877,233 about 33 years later. We have used this 'Wealth Reserve' as I call it to have funds to use low-cost high-deductible insurance, to buy two homes and 5 cars with higher down payments or cash, and now to receive $2,500 a monthly in a retirement supplement.

https://www.amazon.com/Give-your-child-leg-up-manage/dp/1096505355

Why is it wise to diversify?

Readers have asked about holding the stock of their company in their retirement plan. Take a moment to compare the percentage of that stock to the total of all investments. Most often anything over 10% in the stock of one company is considered risky. Unless you are a company executive you are unlikely to know when to sell to avoid a loss. Some stocks do better than others but you and your advisor just don’t know which. Buy all.  Consider that if your employer should change stock value and your account drops by 50%, would you feel like holding on thru the next 10-20 years with all that stock. If you work for a company in the S&P 500 you may feel safe but don’t assume growth will last forever. Plan ahead for a time when the value of your holdings falls—will you panic and sell then? Keep an eye on a market index fund: 2020 up 16% and over 11% long-term.

Stay diversified: https://www.amazon.com/Buffett-Bogle-Holy-Bible-Investment/dp/1523693045

Is an “advisor matching tool” right for you?

“SmartAsset's matching tool lets you compare and interview up to 3 financial advisors,” for free. See your 3 financial advisor matches. You will need to complete a 12 question on screen survey and then give your contact information in order to obtain “3 financial advisor matches.” You don’t actually get to “see your matches.” Now advisors have your email and you have given an info-laden lead to a broker/advisor. I happened to know the availability of local advisors and none of them offer financial planning for a set fee. This ad promises “objective advice from a local fiduciary on your budget” but there are none. Most local advisors are not fiduciaries. I researched. All but one provides ‘planning’ but it costs you an annual fee and commissions. All but one needed over $1 million in “investable assets” to start. Usually this means your account money must be moved to their firm so they can take their quarterly fees whether they make you money or not. Better to use a salaried fiduciary from one of the large online fund firms.

Save $3,000 a year for a $1 million retirement fund

We are living longer. We will need more savings for up to 30 years in retirement. Even if we work after age 67, we will eventually not be able to work. Planning for more income later requires we save more now, while we can. Compare what you spend to the US average household spending standard to see where you might save $3,000 a year. Biggest savings: $3,000 a year in money management fees/commissions. Example: $200,000 nest egg advisor fees 1.5% per year: Save $3,000 by moving to low-fee index account. $3,000 per year savings can add $350,000 to your funds in just 25 years.

Robo advisor rates high in customer satisfaction

Covid pandemic has helped reshape the retail financial services model. Robos have become popular as most services must be delivered virtually now. JD Power survey data shows young investors are satisfied with the robo advisor services model. Investors between the ages of 31 to 45 had the greatest satisfaction with their advisor. That represented 46% of traditional investors and 69% robo-investors.
