Which is better for investments—Dem or GOP president?

Are 401k fees still right for you?

Our current system favors costly middle people who are superfluous today with computers. The average fees levied on 401(k) savings cost us 0.5% to 2% annually (small employers). Compare that to today’s index and ETF funds which cost 0.04% or less. The overcharges we pay do NOT guarantee superior long-term success. In fact, most studies show we lose up to 63% of our total accumulations. Given today’s average earnings of 6% with 4% for us and 2% for Wall Street, we are the Big-time losers. No matter our portfolio—conservative or aggressive—we cannot help but do better with a new system for tax-advantaged investing. Fees are no longer deductible so even in a taxable account; the new system gives you more. Such a system is easily available to any working person without costly trusts, foreign tax havens or tax-avoidance schemes used by the wealthy.

Even if you have only 10 years to retirement, this system can benefit you. The longer your NEW retirement system runs, the more tax-FREE money you have to spend.

Which is better for investments—Dem or GOP president?

Wall Street gurus are currently going through their eternal talk about which party president is better for investors. As you might expect, this is not the right question. There are so many factors in the success of any particular investor that we should not even read these advice statements. Unless we know when exactly we will need our money or when the markets will fail, these pronouncements are just B-D propaganda. Most of us have learned that the stock market advances about 11% per year nominally over time. We know that in any given period, there are times when the market or our portfolio will rise and fall. This is why Warren Buffett, surely a wise investor, bet a million dollars on the S&P 500 stock index run by low-cost Vanguard to beat 5 guru hedge funds. Buffett gave the $1 million to his charity. The gurus are still in business so some of us still want to pay excessive fees to feel they own a superior strategy or portfolio. Unless we have insider information like our representatives in Washington, we are rewarded for just following the wise investor’s proven way. Lose 18.6% or gain 11.09%, your choice.

What fuels the market climb?

Fixed income market provides low yields so investors poor into junk bonds. Our government is buying the bonds of private enterprises so the wealthy receive special treatment from the national deficit spending. The working person has no wage improvement power. The wealth gap gets wider so the rich can afford to stay in the bull market. They don’t have to worry about their company or investments going broke like the local mom and pop business so they can afford to keep putting money in the stock market to increase their wealth. Pension funds must stay in the market since many are under funded for their future liabilities. Wall Street no longer has to worry about a political meltdown so future growth looks promising. GOP Senate control will assure wealthy investors of no significant tax increases on non-wage income or wealth. Most wealthy people are not taxed on income and a wealth tax is very unlikely. Even Romney knows his offshore wealth is not in danger. Despite his protest, Warren Buffett, with $86 billions does not expect his tax rate to go up. Which is better: earning 1% or 12%?

Wealthy finding ways to avoid new taxes

With clearer future, the wealthy are scrambling to get their money hidden from the new tax proposals sitting in Dem inbox. Because the tax rates are probably going to be higher in the future, they can move their IRA balances into Roth tax free accounts now. They know the budget deficit has reached $3.3 trillion, a level not seen since the end of World War II. Since they already got the benefits of overspending, they will want McConnell to kill any stimulus for working people. The wealthy can use QCDs. They are the most tax-efficient way to reduce taxable IRA balances which have remained high with the government support in 2020. Gifts can reduce tax now and lower estate taxes later. Use Trump’s example of a $21 million deduction by giving away the right to build on your forest that never would have been developed anyway. Wealthy tax avoidance loopholes may be closing with the new regime in 2021. They need to act soon to keep the wealth gap growing. We working people can avoid paying the taxes avoided by the wealthy.

Biden’s new regulation: brokers must disclose conflicts of interest

Biden will need to return to the regulations that Obama instituted just before he lost to Trump. Obama’s Fiduciary Rule required that product sellers help us buy the best product available, ignoring seller commissions and fees. On April 6, 2016 the government limited the billions of dollars the financial industry could take from our retirement-savings products and advice. The final Fiduciary Rule was weakened by product sellers so they could take some of our transfer money out of 401(k)s. Trump reversed Obama’s rule and helped product pushers hide fees. Brokerage firms have hidden their bad acts. In the future, advisors will act like accountants not like used car salesmen. Some sellers have already lowered fees due to competition. We will still have to learn and shop in order to get the BEST for our particular situation but at least the industry will need to be more transparent in its offerings. Now we can get the BEST available for us because sellers will need to disclose conflicts of interest more fully. Under Trump, sellers are NOT telling us the whole truth about their bad acts and hidden fees. Now they will have to.

Is a Robo right for you?

The use of automated advice platform, or so-called robo advisors, is continuing to rise, with about 8% of U.S. households having money invested with a robo. Robo advisors are popular with millennials that have significant investable assets; nearly half of millennials with more than $500,000 to invest use a robo, according to the survey. But for mass affluent millennial households with between $50,000 and $500,000 in investable assets, only 20% reported they used a robo, along with 15% of Generation X families and 5% of baby boomer families in the same sphere. Not to lose market share, Fidelity, Schwab and Bank of America, offer new applications or features. By offering such options, the big firms were succeeding at creating a “natural funnel from a free service to their trading or managed account platforms.” But robos are not free, just lower costs than full service brokers. And so robos don’t provide higher returns necessarily. Robos offer some hand holding compared to flying solo. Vanguard is owned by us shareholders so fees/charges are at cost—profits go back to us investors, like a co-op.

Deduct $300 from income in 2020

Here’s how the CARES Act changes deducting charitable contributions made in 2020:

Previously, charitable contributions could only be deducted if taxpayers itemized their deductions. However, taxpayers who don’t itemize deductions may take a charitable deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions made in 2020 to qualifying organizations. For the purposes of this deduction, qualifying organizations are those that are religious, charitable, educational, scientific or literary in purpose. The law changed in this area due to the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act. The CARES Act also suspends limits on charitable contributions and temporarily increases limits on contributions of food inventory. More information about these changes is available on IRS.gov.

What did you do when the market fell 45%

What happened to your money since the financial recession?
When the market fell 45% in 2007-8, did you sell or did you just cringe like I did? I decided there was no other place to go. No “advisor” knew what to do. If you sold your portfolio and moved to safe cash equivalents earning 2%, how have you done? $700,000 in 2007 would be worth $820,000 now if you got out BEFORE the fall. If you got out at $600,000 you would have $700,000 now. If you got out at $500,000, you would have only $585,000 now. I didn’t know where to go so I have the same $720,000 now. Is it smart to sell in a crisis? When I look at the market over 10 years, I see an upward trend: https://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSEARCA:IVV When you look at this graph, remember dividends. In 10 years, you would have lost all those dividends from companies in the 500 index. The companies continued to make profits. That is why you invest. Not to try to time getting out and then getting back in at the right moment. Studies show it is hard.

Vanguard low-fee investing has changed our future—saved us $200,000 +
$1 of every $2 invested today goes to Vanguard. That’s $1 billion a day for 18 months. All the other managers are cutting fees to compete. Don’t be fooled—Fidelity can raise the fees when they need to. Vanguard does not lower prices temporarily as a novelty. We investors own the funds and charge ourselves just enough to provide top drawer service. It has no owners like Fidelity’s Johnson family so there is no multibillionaire to fatten annually. Vanguard has index and managed funds and ETFs at cost for our benefit. Our portfolio grows to $500,000 not $300,000 on fees of 0.20% vs 2.0% over time. Low-fees beat high-fee investments in every period so your $16,000 by age 26 becomes $1 million.

Myth of GOP “small” government, low taxes, high growth
George Will just left the GOP. Many listed as GOP say they can’t support its candidate. We may be seeing the end of the myth of conservative politics. Socially-conservative Christians are flocking to a Manhattan playboy who promises to get stores to say “Merry Christmas” again. They want to block non-Christians from politics and reinstate Christianity as the ‘state’ religion. The GOP candidate is promising to spend more on protection and reversing the progressive trends than the mythical Reagan did. He promised more government spending to control immigration, non-Christians, women’s health clinics, environment, and business. Like Reagan’s expansion of government workers (60,000) and the debt ($2.3 trillion) at the expense of workers (1983 payroll tax hike)—in the name of working people, Trump promises to cut taxes for the wealthy and pay for it by making a national sales tax like Europe. Don Trump will cut Medicare and SS benefits “if tax cuts don’t make big surpluses”. Reagan raised taxes 7 times and gave millions of immigrants amnesty.

GOP proves tax cuts for rich doesn’t create growth; just ruins life for us
GOP statehouses are trying to exclude DEMs from voting, getting health care and good educations. KS is proof that cutting taxes for the rich just ruins that state for the rest of us. They cut Medicaid, education, federal payments, infrastructure like KS and now they can’t fix it. KS lawmakers created more gov not less; and will need to raise revenue from working people in the form of property taxes. NJ Christie wants to triple the gas tax to offset his tax cut for millionaires, who are leaving the state anyway.
GOP isn’t conservative. GOP just don’t like non-white non-Christian & women deciding.

Is indemnity health plan right for you?
ObamaCare ban on savings-type health plan cancelled so Central United and others can profit from poor people again. A DC court struck ACA provision that outlaws plans that don’t pay the full bill when you get sick. Obama said they don’t provide comprehensive care for all diseases or even the full hospital bill so can’t qualify as “minimum essential coverage.” $500 for a $30,000 hospital bill is NOT insurance. These policies are big money makers because companies are selling limited payouts as health insurance. They are popular in countries that have FREE health coverage so people can pay for extras. ACA made policies affordable ($120/mo) or free (expanded Medicaid) for most people. Before you buy, see 1997 movie “Rainmaker”:  https://www.amazon.com/Health-Insurance-ONLY-right-policy/dp/1480125083

"automatic IRAs" for workers who have no workplace retirement plans
50% of the workforce or some 55 million employees have no plan at work. Some states are making the simple plans easy to set up so that workers will have income beside Social Security at age 67. Maryland's new auto-IRA, which mandates the automatic enrollment of any employee who works 30 hours or more for a company with at least 10 employees, were adopted nationwide, as many as 37.5 million Americans could be included, one observer said. The auto-IRAs would typically be invested by state-administered agencies that might compete with private-sector retirement plan vendors and investment managers. But the private sector has not helped set up plans at work before since commissions are low. NJ Christie vetoes the plan at the request of insurers, whose agents offer private funds with high fees. Other states employers show little interest in auto-IRAs.

Is a new car right for you?
A new analysis from Bankrate.com found that a median-income household could not afford the average price of a new vehicle. The average price is about $34,000, according to Kelley Blue Book. New cars have expensive safety features like collision-avoidance systems. However, as the family of Joshua Brown found out, they don’t work .. yet. (big trucks look like sky to autopilot.) Like all new stuff, especially software, it takes time for success. Of course incomes vary a lot. But as the Times showed, in Hartford with incomes of $29,000, an affordable price is $8,000. So everyone borrows more for longer—68 months average and ends up paying $30,000 total. And 30% of us lease now and again make payments forever. Obviously, a 3-year old makes sense. One of our members found a 2012 Camry last year for an all in of $14,850 ($29,000 new) She put down $6,200 and financed the balance at $120 a month for 72 mos. She got 6 airbags, Camry quality but no autopilot, video, cameras, etc. 50K miles.

Don and Hill will need more revenue

Don and Hill will need to raise taxes to pay for walls or wars
Don’s wall and Hill’s return to Iraq and Afghan will cost us more taxes. Both want to spend more on guns and war and that ain’t cheap. Her plan will cost $1.1 trillion. His tax cuts will cost $9.5 trillion and he will cut “waste”—Medicare and SS benefits—to limit borrowing. Both will need to raise revenue one way or other since more 1%ers and corporations are using loopholes to avoid paying any tax. Don can avoid taxes for years with his $50 million loan write off.

Put your advisor on a diet—Market returns will remain low—hedge funds close
Economic gains will be slower with Don or Hill so stocks will be pressed to break 7% return. It is time to put your advisor on a diet and cut their share of your gains. If their fees, trading charges and taxes continue to take 2%, you could end up with only 63% of your potential nest egg. Taking more risk for greater yield is not the answer you want from them. Fees will continue even if no gain. Better to go with par, the average return. Try an ETF or index at 0.05%. You may clear 7% not 5%.

ETF or index fund?
Advisors are all excited about the ETFs they have to offer you. Why? Index funds have been out there since 1976. Perhaps it is because index funds are packaged in a commission product. Yes, the sales person who once hated index funds can now praise them. Excitement over exchange-traded funds continues among financial advisors, according to Journal of Financial Planning. ETFs are the preferred investment vehicle for 83% of advisors up from 40%. Advisors are selling them to clients using ‘lower cost’ as the sizzle. What advisors don’t disclose is that the fund version is much cheaper than the ETF commission/fees. Don’t be fooled.

Is a homeowner policy Virtual inspection right for you?
Esurance offers a do-it-yourself Home Inspection app, which allows policyholders to self-inspect their homes and receive policy discounts. For instance, the insurer needs you to fix broken sidewalk. Now you can prove it yourself. No need to wait for inspector to show when you have a claim. Just record what the insurer asks for to prove you lost your siding or roof. Insurer promises quicker service. They don’t need to send a drone or adjuster. But sometimes you do better with private expert on your side.

What is the most important predictor of your investing success?
According to an unbiased Morningstar study, low-cost funds beat high-cost funds PERIOD. It is a myth of Wall Street that you must pay more for good performance. You are just paying for the Wolf of Wall Street's toys. Other Wall Street myths: Buy low, sell high; manager tenure; proven performer; get in on ground floor; concentrate portfolio.
Warren Buffett, the master of investing, disagrees:
"A very low-cost index is going to beat a majority of the amateur-managed                                money or professionally-managed money."

Income inequality, rising since 1970s, link to frozen wages?
New study, which measures income inequality by state, metro area and county, shows that inequality has risen in every state since the 1970s. Most of the income change has gone to the more senior corporate chiefs and not in salary. Corporations are escaping taxes and shareholder limits on excesses. Your Apple gear costs a lot to buy but little to make. Your shoes don’t cost $150 to make. Verizon service doesn’t cost Verizon $200 a month to provide. Corporations have digitized and outsourced for the last 40 years and haven’t shared the increased profits with workers or shareholders. Is David M. Zaslav’s labor really worth $156 million a year? Yahoo’s CEO got a 69% raise for ..? Chipotle’s head found $29 million despite sickening patrons. His 1st boy got $28 mil. Chase gave its CEO a 134% raise. Another study shows higher CEO pay; worse performance.

Is a Goldman Sachs CD right for you?
The commercial bank famous for creating the mortgage meltdown by packaging bad mortgages with pretty ribbon is now in need of money. They offer savings CDs for the non-1%ers. You only need $500 to obtain 2% for a 5 year CD. So if rates go up you will have the privilege to be stuck with $52 profit over 5 years. If you need it back, you lose part of your $52. If you want most of your money to grow above the inflation rate, you will need to keep it in stocks and bonds at the lowest cost you can find. Your money is actually safer in stocks than with Goldman because you lose half your purchasing power over time: 47 cent stamp used to cost 33 cents just 15 years ago.

Does our President need to be smart and truthful? Do they even care about truth?

What does Trump’s National Socialism stand for?
Reinstate older white male value system: Make ‘WASP” America Great Again
Reinstate Christmas and Christian observance in schools, home, court, stores, etc
Put successionist’s flag back in public spaces - cemeteriess, courts, state houses.
Put up a wall, end trade, bring back repetitive “robotic” jobs back from low wage areas.
Cut regulation of all business activity, lower wages for women, pregnancy
Replace ObamaCare: no mandate (tax credit so you can try to find your own like before)
Cut federal spending on health especially when control women clinics
Cancel immigration for all from non-EU countries. Deport them
Voter suppression of DEMs (even in Brooklyn) Latins, blacks, poor, students.
Limit rights of non-Christians, Muslims, gays, Indians, Asians, protesters, press
Increase debt and devalue debt. Let Mexico pay for the Wall by taxing imports we buy
Create tariffs on imports so we pay $6,000 more for stuff we buy. Middle class tax.
Trade pacts are no good for us and no good for our workers.
Install state gov that cuts Medicaid, education, federal payments, infrastructure like KS.
Lust for executive power”—GOP House leader thinks Don wants to just snap fingers.
I could stand in Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters.”
Don’s rallies begin with crazies denouncing supporters--thrown out as “protestors.”
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” E Burke

Don: I found my running mate: Ken Lewis. He doesn’t like Orlando’s non-whites.
I just took $1million from campaign. I’m not a charity. I need to be reimbursed.
I’ll help Christians dominate American social life: remove church/state barriers.
It’s “my greatest contribution to Christianity” advisors Michele Bachmann, Ralph Reed.
‘I’m really rich, I don’t need donors. Fundraising for to make wealthy feel good.
I’m in Scotland to open golf biz since I still have a job (Scots love me I’m sure!)
I don’t care if Reagan gave 2.9 million illegals amnesty “legalization” in 1986.

Hill:  Looks like 1964 all over again. Goldwater had similar message for racists and lost.

Paul: ‘This is one of my big concerns:’ Don’s “lust for executive power.” He’s OK now?

Bern: “It looks like I will not be the nominee.” More energy than Hill! 2020?
Millennials, wanting to remain, did not turn out like older BRexit voters

Regulators are the only protection we have since we can’t sue anymore
“It is nearly impossible for one individual to take on a corporation with vast resources.” (GOP bill requires impossible: every person in class action suffer “same type and scope of injury”)
Supremes stop us from suing—State courts no longer available to sue corporations!

SCAMS
Why do star athletes have to prey on unconscious women? Too obnoxious or too mental?
Orlando killing was gay revenge?—self-hate crime—Muslims can’t be gay so terrorist
Muslim got FBI to start file on Omar—he was not radicalized enough maybe never.
Tombstone had gun control for good reason—it reduced deaths. Congress helps terrorists

Ignoramus Award: Congress represents the American people. Right. Except on the topic of guns. This is the 3rd rail that can kill politically. When assault rifle kills 26 kids and now 49 gays, is that enough to pass just a background check? Does your rep fear your vote more than NRA? Even in 1686, NJ recognized that people get afraid and into quarrels when they carry guns. 2nd Amend was for militia not average Joe.

How our government wastes our money
Crazy Dems Go on Strike in Congress—Work stoppage to get a vote on guns
Civil rights leader John Lewis and Katherine Clark conspire to force GOP action
