More American ‘Socialism’—Our taxes go to make rich, richer

More American ‘Socialism’—Our taxes go to make rich, richer
Amazon’s Bezos, the man with more wealth than half the nations of the world, takes government money to locate in VA. (America’s form of Socialism is called subsidies)
If Bezos needed another place to work, he could have built anywhere and people would work for him and pay taxes. It will take years for government to earn back this Socialist handout. Many taxpayers across the country are putting their hard-earned money in the pockets of the already wealthy business owners. Governments give money to the elites: Russia helps Putin’s oligarchs just as China subsidizes its businesses. In many studies, subsidies are ineffective for taxpayers since the payback never happens. Once we give money to one, everyone wants the same deal. Of course most businesses that receive tax money don’t really need it like a small business starting out would. An estimated $18 Trillion was transferred from taxpayers to private hands between 2000 and 2015. 99% of it went to large companies, even foreign banks. Yet when those same taxpayers could not pay their mortgages from temporary layoffs, they were ignored. Many lost the home they had put their savings into. People had to give up a lifestyle to survive on less.

Do you need a lawyer to start a small business?
In some states, you do not need the state’s permission to start a business. Some states require you to get a specific name approved for a new legal entity like a Limited Liability Company (LLC). You may be able to do this yourself. For instance, in New Jersey you complete and file a Public Records Filing for a New Business Entity. You pay $125 to New Jersey Division of Revenue in the Department of Treasury. The filing takes 2-3 weeks. The document becomes the original Certificate of Formation, which states that your LLC has been formed. After that, you need to obtain an employer identification number (EIN) from the IRS, open a business banking account, and finalize an operating agreement. However, since you are starting out, you are better off just using your name as your business. Don’t waste your money on a lawyer or an official entity. Just follow the tax requirements: https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/self-employed-individuals-tax-center. Don’t cheat. My experience led me to Dummies book and Nolo.com. Prove your sales work. Many libraries have these books.

Be prepared: we will all live longer
25% of men and women will live into their 90’s. The life insurers keep track of this for profit’s sake. That is 30 years! To get ready, we must either save more, save smart or work longer. Depending on your situation, saving more and working longer may NOT be viable options. Many of us should be saving smarter. Some may find a less stressful job. As an AARP tax-Aide volunteer, I see every combination of these folks. Most in their 90’s can’t work. They are scraping by on SS benefits of less than $20,000 a year. Some are lucky to have an old-style pension but it does NOT increase each year. Some have annuities but they don’t increase either: $1,000 a month was good 25 years ago but no longer. One couple in their early 70’s have two great state pensions after working 25 years. Most teachers are famous for saving money. Some retirees have great dividends and interest. Very few have Medicare supplemental health plans. Very few used a Roth IRA for tax-FREE income. Very few retirees I see have a smart portfolio of stock and bond mutual funds. Some have brokerage accounts with trades they never understood. They have some gains but the fees almost wipe them out: $720 gains but $588 fees. I cannot advise them to use smart savings funds: stock/bond funds at low cost in retirement. But I know they will need them for 30 or MORE years.

Are you ruining your kids and your own retirement?
Nearly 80% of parents give some financial support to their adult children—to the tune of $500 billion a year. That’s twice what parents put into retirement accounts. Almost three-quarters of respondents acknowledged putting their children’s interests ahead of their own retirement needs. Half of Americans approaching retirement have nothing saved in a 401(k) or other individual account. But where does that leave us? Will they be able to take care of themselves once the money is gone? And what about us? We end up living on meager SS benefits and they can’t manage their own income shortfall. We might feel we must share our wealth because the longest bull market has kept us safe. But our good luck may not rub off on our kids. They will choose the easy way instead of working their way up from the bottom. College is not the only answer—certainly NOT for everyone. They may be a better technician than a manager under extreme pressure. Student debt is strangling us. Perhaps a better way is to offer them a business proposition—instead of living with you and all the comforts of home—write them a business loan to get them on their feet. Like immigrants to this country, they can find their own way of making a living. You have helped them but you haven’t crippled them for life and your own future!

Where is FREE tax preparation?
The free AARP tax-aide sites are filling up quickly: aarp.org/money/taxes/aarp_taxaide/. Before spending $200-400 for a paid preparer, try filling in the screens using the IRS partners at irs.gov https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/. The instructions are easy to follow especially if you have last year’s return to compare what forms you need. I have found https://www.freetaxusa.com very easy to negotiate and respond to email questions. This one charges only $15 for your state return: Fed is free. It is still $15 when as complicated like mine. Basically, you must pay tax on all your taxable income—wages, pensions, etc. This year you have less to deduct because the standard deduction was doubled. Beware some software glitches. However, you lost the personal exemption of $4,050 for yourself, your spouse and each of your dependents. For each child under age 17 you receive $2,000. In high property tax states—NY, NJ, CA, CT, etc you will probably owe this year. The deduction cap is now $10,000 and the average homeowners in these states pay about $20,000 property tax. The law was written by a Rep from a Red state.
Try software at irs.gov https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/ before you go to paid preparers.

Make sure all your tax documents come before you file

Make sure all your tax documents come before you file
Since there is no enforcement of tax document mailings by mutual funds, banks, brokerage and advisors as well as employers, check last year’s filing to make sure you have everything to file BEFORE you go to your preparer. Few keep the deadline of January 31. Call IRS if not by February 28. If you have a kid in college, make sure they do NOT take your dependent exemption themselves. They don’t need it to get their job withholding tax refund. You need it to claim deductions and an extra $500. Kids should check the box “Someone can claim you as a dependent.” https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf. When you are ready, IRS has efile partners that have easy software programs that may allow you file for FREE. Some charge depending on your state and level of income. Most will cost less than the advertised brands ($50+$30) unless you must use a paid preparer. Trump has doubled the number of forms required to file many middle-income returns so the average price will be higher. And you won’t pay a penalty if you paid 85% of what you owe. Many of us will pay MORE than Trump promised since the wealthy and corporations pay less. January 28 is the first day of FREE ‘human’ preparation by AARP tax-aides. Make sure you have all of your docs: https://www.irs.com/articles/tax-form-checklist. Sign up at locations near you: https://secure.aarp.org/applications/VMISLocator/searchTaxAideLocations.action.

Long term care policies benefits and prices vary by 243%
If you are wealthy you may not need a policy. If you are NOT wealthy you may not be able to afford this coverage. You can buy from a new insurer with better understanding of the cost profile. Most advisors say buy at a younger age and change the benefits to meet your needs. Great for them but how to cope with increasing prices for what may be a very long time—age 55-85 means 30 years at $3-4,000 a year. AND you may not need coverage. That’s $100,000 wasted cash vs. $500,000 invested at 8%. Unless you know you will need it soon, you may be better off paying cash when the time comes. $4,750 to $2,500 per year LTC policy prices vary greatly.

A pathway to health care for all
CA new gov proposing extending ACA ObamaCare to insure more residents. This incremental move may light the way for other states concerned for its citizens. Newsom uses state funds to fill in the gaps for those without coverage and ignores the mandate. More carrot and less stick may help CA do what others haven’t up till now. About 10% of its non-elderly population lacks coverage. A study last year projected a steady rise, finding that Republicans' Obamacare sabotage and other factors would increase the un-insurance rate to 13% by 2023, with about 1 million more uninsured Californians, barring a policy shift. Massachusetts has its own mandate and subsidy program, and it has the lowest uninsured rate in the nation. Families are working hard to pay medical bills but still need help even with 4 part-time jobs and working mom.

Are ‘Target Date’ funds right for you?
A recent survey of employees enrolled in TDF shows they are misunderstood. The industry does its best to keep those with low pension balances in the dark. The industry is a for-profit one and has no interest in explaining this low-cost high-return strategy for retirement funding. Instead of showing how this option gives employees the best shot at a successful pension fund, working folks have the idea that this strategy will assure a safe retirement income, will never go down, is guaranteed by the government and becomes a cash asset in retirement. Workers do know TDF asset allocations shift from stocks to bonds over time. Most employees have had no investing experience and so if their 401k default is TDF, they never learn what they really own. Employers are not in a position to teach investing and the fund complex they use has no responsibility to provide this service. Employers have all but abandoned paid worker pensions. And no one has stepped up to provide the basic financial education all of us need at our first job. https://www.amazon.com/Financial-Literacy-Steps-Success-Money/dp/1491044616

Avoid double taxation when you inherit an IRA
When you inherit an IRA from someone, you need to know the amount they contributed over the years as after-tax non-deductions. Since IRA accounts have been around, contributors who wanted to keep on investing even without current tax deductions because of their incomes, were able to keep building their retirement nest egg. If they started taking distributions mandated by the IRS as RMDs at age 70 1/2, they had to calculate the amount to exclude from taxation as regular income since they had already paid tax on the contributions. They should have filed a form every year (Form 8606) keeping track of this so called ‘basis’—the amount they already paid tax on. The financial trustee for this account never had to keep this information so you as the beneficiary must go back into the tax records to compute the excluded ratio. Otherwise the IRS will treat the whole distribution to you as taxable at your rate. The last tax return should have the Form 8606 so you and your tax preparer can take it from there. Of course, now we have the Roth IRA which shields all the growth in your IRA contributions from taxation. Use the Roth for your current investing or convert your old IRA to the Roth for totally FREE distributions when you take them. You do not have to take them so they are the perfect working-person’s estate plan. Heirs pay no tax.

What did John Bogle give us?
John Bogle died Thursday. John Bogle created The Vanguard Group—the mutual funds owned by us—the investors—at cost, so we could keep more of what we earned. At work in a financial firm one day, he responded to the fall of his clients’ accounts by noting that speculation was not in the best interest of the firm’s clients. Bogle fixed on the role of a firm as steward of the clients’ funds. In 1976, his new firm introduced the index fund to individuals. Indexing was run by banks for some large investors. In 1977, Bogle stopped selling funds through brokers. The company eliminated sales charges and became a pure no-load mutual fund complex—a move that would save shareholders $ billions in sales commissions and fees—increasing their gains. Stewardship is the attitude of salaried workers at Vanguard which is now the largest provider of funds to investors. Noted economist, Paul Samuelson ranked "this Bogle invention along with the invention of the wheel, the alphabet, Gutenberg printing." Jack Bogle’s legacy is rooted in the concept that investing should be conducted solely in the interest of investors. Bogle’s single mindedness on fiduciary stewardship finds its meaning in the company he founded, the (low cost and simple) product strategies and corporate governance reforms he champions, and the nine books he wrote. The industry has followed Bogle’s lead—almost every investor is now paying less and earning more because of this industry disruptor.  See attached.

Real estate moguls lick their chops at Trump’s ‘opportunity zones’
Trump did Jared and friends a big favor. Moguls who develop real estate or fund businesses in these areas are able to defer capital gains on profits earned elsewhere and completely eliminate them on new investments in 8,700 low-income census tracts. The goal is to reinvigorate these areas. But the question is whether the 2017 tax law will, as Mogul Mnuchin predicts, pump $100 billion into places that need it most, or if investors will play it safe by funding projects in a few zones already on the upswing. But like most deals, there are hidden terms. Investing in a relatively illiquid partnership or corporation with the intent of holding the investment for as many as 10 years in order to maximize the available tax benefits requires a strong conviction regarding the merits of the investment itself. Some areas are just not ready for money without people. And state tax codes may not help. The Federal tax benefits don’t exist until the property is sold—no gains; no deduction. And be careful about rolling over their eligible gains into a QOF within 180 days. The rules are complicated.

Tax reform means more for rich and we pay

What does ‘tax reform’ really mean for us?
Tax ‘reform’ by GOP means only one thing: Rich get richer from our pockets. KS almost went bankrupt by cutting taxes for businesses and increasing consumption sales taxes on working people. Schools were so underfunded that the KS Supremes had to order KS assembly to raise money. Trump invited gov Brownback to share his ‘secret’ to cutting services to workers and he got an ambassadorship: International Religious Freedom or head proselytizer to the world. The new voter suppression czar, KS executive Kobash, is trying to replace Brownback.
KS GOP was forced by real facts to raise taxes. Congressional GOP will cut taxes for the wealthy and business even though KS proved that philosophy only raises debt. Reports say the GOP will “reduce tax rates for all American businesses, encourage companies to bring back cash parked abroad (failed in 2004) and allow “unprecedented” capital expensing, or write-offs (Trump wrote off $916 million) of big investments.” Treasury Mnuchin wants a “national online sales tax that could help states fund infrastructure projects.” Trump’s budget guy has a trick to hide cuts in our Social Security benefits. Medicaid/ObamaCare support for the health of the poor, disabled, and sick will be cut and converted to state block grants which states will use to shore up their budgets.
KS businesses and rich did NOT invest their tax refunds in more jobs. They invested where they could make money—hedge funds and offshore tax havens. The wealth and income gap has widened. Working people in KS had to pay with consumption taxes.
Lobbyists in Congress are already working to maintain their own subsidies/loopholes. Are you?  Like KS we end up with less revenue and more national debt. Just math. State taxes will also be increased to pay for Trump’s job promises. See WI below.
Avoid future taxes by using your tax-FREE account: https://www.amazon.com/Tax-FREE-Wealth-How-laws-free/dp/1475089236

What Trump’s ‘bring back jobs to America’ costs?
It will cost WI taxpayers $230,700 per worker to fulfill Trump’s promise of more factory jobs in US. Carrier left for Mexico despite Trump talk. That cost IN tax payers $7 million just for the sound bite. Gov Walker promised Apple and others that Wisconsin would cut the company $200 million to $250 million a year for up to 15 years. That works out to $230,700 per worker, assuming the factory goes on to generate 13,000 jobs. Sometimes companies change their mind like Carrier did. So far, only 3,000 jobs by 2020, with an average yearly wage of $53,000, have been promised. Walker gave the tax incentives to beat six other states in the quest for the factory. Walker lets Apple pollute the region too. IN, NC, OH, TX, PA and NY were in the running but tax payers can keep money now.
Trump’s great business deal: From now on, every company is going to want more tax subsidies from our state taxes than jobs can offset. It’ll take 150 years to recoup subsidy.

Will any Republican have the courage to lead the battle for a democratic America?
The President wrote on Twitter that in order to pass “great future legislation” the Senate “must immediately go to a 51 vote majority, not senseless 60”. We have all seen the tendency to dictatorship. Chaos in Washington and Trump’s ignorance of his role as president in a checks and balances democratic society. His voters wanted a shake up and his advisor Bannon called for the “destruction of the administrative state.” We withdrew from world leadership in energy, refugees, shared defense, holding back Russian aggression. We do nothing to stop Russian meddling in our elections—no one has checked the voting computers for malware. Edict by tweet to expel WH staff and service members without regard to rules of human decency. Jolting remarks that stand in for policy statements. Pink slip tweets are a coward’s way to run America.
Now he calls for the elimination of the legislative rules that we made to govern. History has a lesson here. Others have joined Trump in rule changes favoring GOP. Many states have been taken over by Koch’s extremists. We were lucky that 3 GOP ‘profiles in courage’ stopped the cancellation of health care for 22 million Americans. Think about that—22 million with one thumb.
We are at a turning point. Who will rule here in America? We need another Senator from AZ to tell the president it is time to go.

Can Medicare for All actually get passed?
Can America provide affordable health care to all its citizens? Bernie Sanders wants to find out. He is putting a bill in the Senate in August. Over 50% of Americans want to fix ObamaCare and keep the provisions that help people stay healthy. Republicans seem to understand NOW that Americans want health care. Duh. When it comes to taxes, GOP seems to understand the formula very well: NO ONE likes taxes. The tax code Congress has written over the years (they act like it came out of the sky), is there because rich people decided to have those they paid to elect put it there. 1% get all the subsidies.
Why is it so hard to believe that we want a good deal too? Is “socialized medicine” so terrible that Americans can never receive a decent plan at an affordable price? Medicare pays my doctor not some government doctor! Since the wealthy have kept the average wage at the same level since the 1980s, is it so hard to understand that most of us can’t afford to buy quality health care ($18,142)? All the gains in productivity by American labor has gone to the very wealthy. Why is it that most retirees like their Medicare but the rich ones don’t want it for all the other people without a job? Drs & hospitals like ACA.
Why is ObamaCare OK for Cruz, McConnell and Ryan, but not OK for us?

How can you turn every $100 invested into $10,000?
Ever wonder how the rich get richer? Not all are great stock pickers or founders of Amazon or Google. Warren Buffett explained how it is done in his annual reports to stockholders. “My wealth has come from a combination of living in America, some lucky genes, and compound interest.” Unfortunately, most Americans do not benefit from compounding since they don’t have the money to invest. Buffett has been patient for over 60 years: his $6,000 from paper routes has grown to $72 billions. He made mistakes along the way. He shows us how to grow $100 a month into $1,000,000 over TIME. $250 a month gets you there in about 33 years; $500 a month, in about 27 years. Investing in a bunch of companies and time is all it takes. He confesses that if we aren’t patient, we won’t be rich. Even retirees use Buffett’s advice. He tells exactly where to invest too.

MONEY BALL for Investing: Winning in an unfair market
Your family can beat Wall Street in the series because you use Billy Beane’s lessons.
In 2002, Billy Beane did the impossible. He knew he could not afford to buy replacements for Damon, Giambi and Isringhousen, so he hired an unknown economist wonk who had a system. Brad Pitt (Moneyball) explains his take on the system to his scouts. To win we need runs, so on-base percentage is critical. Does not matter how they get there—walks are good. He hires cheap players who have high on-base ratios. Scouts complain the new are not “baseball material” or too old or can't play positions or girl friend is ugly.
The “professionals” think he is nuts. One is fired. Since the manager, Art Howe, doesn't buy it, he does not use the new players. Billy trades Art's players away so the manager is forced to use Billy's. Billy actually explains to the team how they can win by using their strengths—just get on base. Belichick's “Do your job.”          In his book, Michael Lewis tells us how the economics of baseball work and how Billy Beane, as a failed player, made history by NOT following the professionals' 'expert' knowledge.
How can your family beat Wall Street 'professionals' over time? We take the Billy Beane approach.
First, we acknowledge that we have a small budget for investing. We can't afford the hedge funds, offshore tax shelters, and expensive Wall Street money managers taking 2-3% a year. We use our economic ‘wonk,’ Warren Buffett.

Ten steps to lower car insurance
Consumer Reports how to cut premiums. Insurers change their marketing strategy to pick up new customers so you must shop to save. I have shopped every two years for full coverage on 2 Toyotas and have gotten discounts each time. I have used bank debits for a further discount. I claim lower driving miles and car kept in garage off the street for more. Insurers know from national record that I have had no accidents providing another discount. I took a driver safety course 1 hour and got another discount. Be careful which car you buy—it can cost you more. Here are those gone extinct in 2018. Used Tesla for $40,000. Very fast.

Vanguard is making every investment company cut fees and we save
Fidelity is cutting fees on some mutual funds and ETFs to stop the hemorrhaging of customer money to Vanguard. We will have more because we pay less. Over time, paying 17bp vs 21bp will save Fidelity customers $18 million. However, after-tax returns and tracking are also important. These are why Vanguard is still drawing funds from other investment managers. Fidelity still overcharges in its largest funds—68bp vs 32bp for Vanguard’s managed funds. Fidelity in June said more than 1,500 employees took a buyout offer in order for the Johnson family to maintain their profit margins. Fidelity customers may find the drop in fees only raises their wait time for exchanges and services.
