What to do with your $1200

Suggestion list: What to do with your $1200 or $2400
Hold on to it for essentials as the future is unknown. If you must have cash to buy an essential down the line, you have it. Doctors, landlords, lenders, utilities can wait—they have reserves and access to federal lending programs we don’t have. Many states are making evictions and shutoffs illegal. If you have been laid off, explore your health care options. Trump says he will pay hospitals for C-19 care but what if you break a leg running your part-time business or fighting to get into the grocery store. Use some of your money to start/expand a hobby. People need something to do at home so offer your hobby/book/toys/etc over Amazon eBay, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, etc sales process. You may be allowed a tag sale in your front yard as long as you have 6 feet lines on ground. Better yet use Craig list. I sold an attic house fan that way. Never take anything on the internet for truth without ‘trust but verify’. I go to 3 other sources before I click. My garden center sent me an email offer with link to see details. I emailed them directly and they confirmed it was a scam/phishing from theft of their email list. Explore your situation. Ask your employer for help: vacation pay; forward sick time, student loan, etc. Ask your vendor for a couple of months wait in writing.
Gov resources to help deal with virus recession:

How the rich avoid paying taxes anywhere
It is easy—live where you want to but claim your legal residence—citizenship—in a country jurisdiction that does not tax money earned outside that country. In essence live in a tax haven—just officially. The rich maintain an intense schedule of travel using a virtual single-family office of professional management over their businesses. With accounting firms geographically dispersed, each is the cornerstone of their single-family management office. Their virtual family office coordinates experts and specialist serving the needs in specific geographic areas. This management scheme helps the wealthy be everywhere and nowhere at the same time. They are true global citizens—avoiding all local taxing and legal authorities. They even get C-19 screening tests immediately for free. Since money is no object, your family office will provide low taxes on your income from everywhere in the world and you just charge it to your personal credit card. When your yacht needs maintenance, the office in the country where it is docked takes over. Almost all your possessions and assets are owned by one of your companies so a wealth tax is as ineffective as the US income tax. You are not subject to jury duty or military service. Set up your own tax-free system here at home.

Does Trump receive a tax deduction since his name is on relief checks?
Will Trump’s accountants use the fact that his name appears on the check millions of voters receive use it as a marketing expense deduction for the campaign for president? In past campaigns, the use of his name has been a deductible expense. Why else would Trump insist to the Treasury Mnuchin that the IRS must delay checks by printing his name on the checks?  "During economic downturns in 2001 and 2008, President Bush included his name on letters sent in advance of recovery checks." The IRS refused to put Bush’s name on the checks. An observer noted that to avoid the potential for corruption or misuse of funds, a civil servant – not the president or someone appointed by the president – signs the checks. Trump wanted to actually sign as payer. Now he denies it and blames his staff. Treasury denies that coding software and reprinting the checks with Don’s name will NOT delay delivery despite previous reports. One Rep said: "So Trump is delaying the stimulus checks so his signature can be printed on each one. Him first. You second. Always." Trump makes $59 million on his name image.

Experts don’t know when businesses will restart
Every financial guru says they know but they are just guessing. This is not like any recession/depression before so we need to make plans to survive. Many are rescheduling their cruises in 2021 but that is more marketing (25% off). Wall Street’s ups and downs are just positive thinking by speculators. Politicians’ forecasts are biased. Some businesses will not be able to come back so the unemployed may have to shift jobs. More than 16.8 million Americans filed for new jobless claims. Some can’t even get the form to file. States’ cash is low. If there are over 10 million looking for work at the same time, it will take months to rehire/restart/restock for next year. Think of the lines when ads post 1,000 openings. Get refunds. Don’t waste that $1,200 paying bills. Doctors, landlords, lenders, utilities can wait—they have reserves and access to federal lending programs we don’t have. Many states are making evictions and shutoffs illegal. Perhaps a temp job will keep you motivated and fed for a few months. Prepare a budget to cover food necessities for 6 months so you don’t panic. We just don’t know and panic is all we can control now. During the ‘30s depression President Roosevelt helped us come together with a speech: Only Thing We Have to Fear Is Fear Itself” Definitely worth reading today:
“Only a fool … can deny the dark realities of the moment.”

JPMorgan caught overcharging own employees again
JPMorgan sued for overcharging 401k employees: failed fiduciary: pensions will be cut. Paying the 2% fees over time causes total accumulations to be cut by over HALF. JPMorgan and 401k staff is robbing its employees of the pension they paid for. Like many other large and small companies, the owners seek to make the 401k plan a profit center. The fiduciary duty—making investment options that are best for the employee—is required by law. Almost every new hire is given poor investing advice by the HR department in charge of signing employees up for the owner’s plan. Most HR people are not financial planners so they tell most young and old employees to put all their money into so-called stable funds. HR recommends these funds so that the owner will not be sued when the employees account value goes down. However, for anyone under age 50, these are the worst investment choices since most employees have time to grow their accumulations at the market rate of 11% not 2%: stocks vs bonds. Morgan employees, like most 401k members will end up with $62,000 instead of $195,500. Only the enlightened employee will put all their contributions into the low-cost index fund if they can find it in their plan’s 56 page brochure.

Why file your taxes ASAP?
If you have refund, waiting gets you nothing. Could the IRS run out of money? Could gov computers make a mistake after April 15 because they did not get the email about extension to July 15? Is it possible there will be big delays since all the IRS and check printers are out of the office now in virus lockout? Just to avoid all the bad stuff, file now. Check your state for deadline. The federal and state filing can cost you nothing at https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/. Another site has no cost or restrictions: https://www.creditkarma.com/tax. And remember you can usually reduce income and thus tax by making a deductible contribution to your IRA. File now for refund: 90 day interest-free extension if you owe. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-20-18.pdf

Does your child know enough to invest for their future?

Does your child know enough to invest for their future?
High school students in 21 states must now take a personal finance course in order to graduate. Five states — Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio and South Carolina — added the prerequisite. One state, Florida, dropped its requirement. One in five American 15-year-olds doesn’t understand basic financial concepts like budgeting, borrowing costs, saving and compounding. Without some educational help, poor students had far less access to financial education, compared to wealthier students. “If you teach the kids,” one educator said, “you teach the parents.” Remember, SS benefits will be cut by 20% in 15 years. Kids must start SS benefit supplement TODAY.

How to double your savings over time
The most important fact about saving money is compounding. Only the rich have learned this concept because they see how it works in their lives. Most of us don’t see it in our lives because we don’t think in terms of the outcome over time. Most of us experience the opposite of compound interest: debt. We don’t realize that we will have to pay about FOUR times the amount of a credit card debt IF we pay only the minimum required. If we pay the minimum on the average debt of $8,398, it will take us 20 years to pay it off. We will have spent about $30,000: $23,000 in interest. But if we invested that same minimum payment in a simple index fund and earned compounded interest over time, we would have $115,000. We could easily buy more stuff for that same $8,398. Long-term investing: put $250 per month ($3,000 a year) in a low-cost stock market index fund. It would grow to about $65,000 in 11 years: $33,000 + interest $32,000. Our savings can double in about 12 years IF we invest it--compounding the earnings every year. This is how the rich stay rich. Show your child how to double their savings.

Why did your advisor provide you with less than 31.5%?
Yes. You know why. In fact your fees resulted in 5 managers taking over $1 BILLION of your dollars last year. These unconscionable fees are especially notable, especially given only a third of the 15 managers on the top manager list beat the S&P 500 Index. And the same one does NOT do it every year. It also comes as the hedge fund industry has been grappling with closures and mediocre returns. Very few managers can beat the index over time. Buffett put his $1,000,000 bet on the Vanguard 500 Index when a manager with 5 different funds challenged him 10 years ago. Buffett advises the hedge fund crowd to avoid the 20% fees and use index funds like the gigantic pension funds. The manager and their firm need your fees to exist. Vanguard is owned by those that invest in Vanguard funds. There is no outside owner needing profits. Since no manager can beat the index consistently, you could be earning 11% a year instead of the average equity managed account earning you 3.79% over time. Can they tell which stocks will soar nest?

Why most investors don’t need an annuity
Many investors are DIY investors—they have jettisoned their advisors since learning the John Bogle and Warren Buffett investment lessons: advisor costs detract from your earnings. Advisors and annuities can take up to HALF your earnings in fees and trading costs. Here are DIY's results for 2019. They are total return investors—selling shares equally across all 10 funds for their monthly RMD income in retirement. Some want protection from a down market and so they overweight Wellesley Income instead of buying an annuity: Wellesley’s 9.7% a year is not too bad to live on.

Are cheap life insurance ‘upgrades’ right for you?
Your agent/broker/salesperson has 12 ways to ‘upgrade’ your policy once they have you talking. But are they just premium add-ons that cost you big dollars over time? Most premium increases are not needed: add-ons are cheap because they don’t add much value. For instance, paying more for a child rider so they can buy a policy later or cover death expenses is unnecessary. No parent wants death insurance and very few young adults are denied coverage. Do you really want to give your spouse a windfall because you die by accident? The chance of that is almost nil. You are better off buying a higher death benefit in a 10-year term policy than any rider. You may not even need life cover later.

Is life insurance a good alternative to the Stretch IRA estate plan?
Advisors are coming up with ways to get your IRA to your heirs after you’re gone. Life insurance has always been a favorite since it pays much more commissions than the previous Stretch IRA plan. But does a lump sum death benefit to your kids or grandkids really address your concerns about taxation and spendthrift beneficiaries? What are viable alternatives to the Stretch which allow a bene to take the RMDs over their lifetimes instead of at once or over 10 years? Each situation is different so you may need a more elaborate plan with an estate attorney than you had before. Perhaps time will provide additional choices. Lifetime gifting may be our best choice.

File for the quickest refund FREE
If you meet certain criteria and have your documents already, federal and state can cost you nothing at https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/. Another site has no income/forms restrictions: https://www.creditkarma.com/tax. The software helps you avoid common mistakes before you file. Even if you make a tiny mistake, the IRS usually catches it without penalty. I have used most of these programs for years even though my income is above the limits. Most charge nothing for the federal and state. Some charge only $12.95 for the state. For 2019, six states have kept the health mandate tax if you don’t have health care cover so that state return may get complicated. Once you file your first year, your previous years’ data is there and pre-fills your forms: Saves a lot of time and money. Try it before you spend $200-300 at a for-profit preparer. No refund due? File to keep your ID from scammers. Your W-2 should be sent to you by Jan 31 according to IRS. Your refund can be in your direct deposit account in 10 days. Check mobile: IRS2Go within 24 hours after IRS receives your e-filed return for status.

The Don took away our protection from Wall Street

The Don just took away your best protection from greedy Wall Street
Trump killed the Fiduciary Rule, requiring financial advisers to act in the “best interests of their clients in retirement planning.” And you thought your advisor was doing that all along. And what is wrong with acting in our best interests? Well, the sales people are required to fill out forms when they gouge you on the sale of an annuity for instance. Of course the industry says the little guy will not even get an appointment if we can’t charge high fees for accounts under $500,000. Most firms have already made changes that provide the same products. They just charge the lower fee over a longer period of time. So, instead of 6% up front, you would pay 1% for ever—10-20 years. Wall Street is never going to provide a regular person with products that give them the best deal. They can’t. You will always pay more for products from a full service firm. The overhead in their offices and salesman pay demand high-fee products. Plus Wall Street is not a not-for-profit. Obama’s Fiduciary Rule asked advisors to act more like a trustee than a “boiler room” Wolf to protect you. Trump killed the Rule—cabinet are all Wall Streeters.

FREE tax preparation
Advertising to you is how they pay for free credit score and “free” tax prep
https://www.creditkarma.com/ needs your eyes to obtain dollars from sellers of financial services and they give you software to file federal and state taxes at no cost. If you need to file a simple return, this is the cheapest way. Usually simple means you have W-2 income and no home deductions. The IRS has a topic look up so you can find the answer to your question easier than waiting on the telephone for an operator to answer:  https://taxmap.ntis.gov/taxmap/. You can do your federal online FREE using commercial sites through the IRS https://www.irs.gov/uac/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free. These sites charge for a state return. You can also use a local AARP tax aide office: http://www.aarp.org/money/taxes/aarp_taxaide/ AARP does not discriminate by age or income so they can usually take care of most people. Best tip: deduction for IRA contributions and tax credit up to $2,000 subtracted from tax you owe. Double Your Pleasure.
(By the way, IRS does not call or email you. Scammers DO call and threaten.)

The Don’s Wall will cost us a lot more than he says.
Trade tax of 20% will raise cost of your car, appliances, etc. See list of imports.
Trump’s 20% tax on all imports from Mexico will cost us more and endanger 6-14 million American jobs. We make things with stuff from Mexico. The Don is wrong about America losing to Mexico. We get more of the benefit of trade with Mexico than the Mexicans. Your vehicle, like all of us, is an immigrant. All new cars are made inside and outside the US. Many parts your mechanic uses to fix and maintain your car come from Mexico. If Trump starts a global trade war with his Wall, we will lose jobs because we make things with imports. Look at what happened with Bush II tariffs on China steel in 2002. It reduced our exports cutting another 500,000 jobs HERE not there.
It's up to us to prosper despite The Don's 'economy' for the rich.

The Don’s tax reform will give the 1%ers HALF the benefits
"If you look at the most wealthy, the top 1 percent would get about half of the benefits of his tax cuts, and a millionaire, for example, would get an average tax cut of $317,000," one tax expert says. Trump’s assumption is that wealthy people will invest and corporations will produce more and create jobs. However, right now corporations are using their excess profits to ‘un-build’ and reduce payrolls through automation. Every willing worker is employed but at a lower wage (with inflation) than in the 1980s. Even 2 income families have no higher income to buy more goods. The wealthy are using their greater wealth to buy art and property—not create jobs. So over time, because the deficit will grow at a faster pace, America will actually lose jobs. Growth spurts cannot be sustained without greater participation by new and working Americans earning more. Higher deficits require higher interest payments and thus greater taxes the rich don’t pay.

Robo-advisors help wealthiest cut fees—earn more
“Our research consistently shows that robo-advisors are becoming increasingly accepted by wealthy investors,” said Spectrem. “To remain competitive, traditional advisors should lead with their unique expertise in establishing a financial plan and emphasize their ability to evaluate and react to world events.” But advisors like MorganStanley want fees from ETF indexes so client fees double—advisor plus index manager. Among the robo-users, almost half were directed to use digital advice by a human financial advisor. Just 13 percent reported using a robo as their primary advisor. While 41 percent of robo-users were self-directed investors, a larger portion, 43 percent, described themselves “event-driven”—likely to seek professional advice for specific needs like saving for retirement or asset allocation. But advisors despite fees still can’t foretell the future.

Did you lose something?
Another way to find money that is yours but you didn’t know it existed. Try site ClaimDog.com a free service that simplifies the process of finding “unclaimed property.” Using your name and all the states you have lived in, it does a search of public records. Because this is property you probably never heard you owned it could be anything: a rebate check or a forgotten safe deposit box. There are other services but they charge to find your stuff. Also try the state sites with searchable database. For example, http://www.osc.state.ny.us/ouf/ had an old tax refund of mine worth $668. I guess when I moved they did not have my new address. Another time I had a telephone company refund coming.
Unclaimed property is one of thousands of savings ideas: https://www.amazon.com/Financial-Bargain-Book-Save-000/dp/1517264936

GOP tax plan: cut income taxes for the rich; raise sales and use taxes for us
OH has joined KS in giving the wealthy more while taking more from the rest. Ohio Gov. John Kasich proposed an increase in sales and other taxes to pay for a 17% income-tax cut—mostly for the rich. The GOP will increase the state sales tax by a half-cent to 6.25 percent and increase taxes on cigarettes, vaping products, alcoholic beverages and oil and natural gas produced by fracking. KS is going bankrupt from their “socialism for the rich” tax cut in 2012. They had to raise taxes for the budget and hit up the citizens who drive, smoke and drink. NJ raised gas taxes 23 cents to continue the “millionaire” tax cut. CA did the opposite and is prospering. Trump has proposed a 20% hike in tax of imports while giving his class a huge tax break. KS “inspires” GOP to cut health plan supports.

Vanguard cuts fees again
Increasing flow of investments from managed funds to low-cost Vanguard funds, the client-owned mutual fund company has lowered fees on 21 more. The move will save investors $25 million. The money management industry has been in a fee fight, with Vanguard putting pressure on the likes of Fidelity, BlackRock and Schwab as they duke it out for increasingly cost-conscious investors. The Vanguard 500 Index provided 11.9% return in 2016 and 10.9% a year since 1976. The 500 Index of the top 500 US companies is one of the Vanguard Top Ten. You get more of your earnings back with fewer fees.
