Advisor abuse

Where is your portfolio so far in ’21?

Some of our readers have shared their wise decisions to stick with the indexes and low-cost mutual funds. Most use Vanguard funds and don’t trade. They follow the 3 Bs—“Buffett, Bogle and Bible” strategy. Ask your advisor how you did so far in 2021.

2021 Total Return Fund                    Long-term Return      Longevity

15.2% 500 Index                                             11.3% since 1976

17.3% Energy                                                    8.8% since 1984

15.5% Extended Market                                  10.7% since 1987

10.4% Health                                                   16.2% since 1984

  6.3% International Growth                              11.6% since 1981

17.7% PRIMECAP                                         14.2% since 1984

16.4% Small Cap Index                                    10.6% since 1960

  5.1% Wellesley Income                                    9.7% since 1970

19.6% Windsor                                                11.5% since 1958

19.0% Windsor II                                            11.2% since 1985

14.3% Average                                                11.6% *

*Average Annual Returns as of 06/30/21.

Investing just $250 a month in the 500 Index alone can compound (Buffett’s secret formula) to $1,000,000 in 33 years. That’s $99,000 in and $999,999 out.

How do we know our advisor is taking advantage of us?

Even the wealthiest get taken by their “trusted” advisor. We are subject to the same bad treatment. I follow the abuse of those who put their hard-won assets with a paid “professional” money handler. If you don’t understand the cool-sounding products you own or how much you paid for them, you are being abused. If you don’t get consistent logical communication from your advisor, you are being abused. I once told my broker to sell my investment in a fund and he ignored my request, advising me to transfer the money to an annuity. My complaint to his boss was ignored. I took my money elsewhere. Wall Street makes it almost impossible to learn about the bad actors. It is easy to get their ‘rap’ sheet of complaints wiped off the record at https://brokercheck.finra.org/. Arbitrators in the Finra-administered forum are “rubber stamping” expungement (delete) requests. Many brokers or their firms settle before the hearing, thus erasing it. If you feel pushed into transactions, you are being abused. The people who get ripped off by financial advisors are those who do not pay attention. Ignoring the details of what you own leads to abuse. Advisors must generate revenue to stay employed so they will interpret your goals differently than you do. You can’t just tell them to “make money.”

Can our employer help us accumulate enough to retire?

Large employers have the ability to help us with low-cost high-return investment options. A small biz may use an insurance agent to set up high-cost annuities for each person. Both employers can help us grow our nest egg without current taxes but poor and expensive options from an insurer can kill long-term accumulation. Example: Big firms offer us 401k plans with low-cost index funds (0.04%) that can compound our contributions at 11% per year. After having $125 invested in a stock index fund every 2 weeks, we can build a $1-2,000,000 retirement. Our $250 a month goes into a tax-deferred plan so our income tax is less each year. Small firms put us in plans with overall long-term costs of 1-2% which can take 63% of our possible accumulation. There are better solutions for those stuck in these plans but we must pursue them ourselves.

Use this guide: https://www.amazon.com/New-American-Retirement-System-ReserveTM/dp/1461030072

Do you over think your investments?

Who are these new Wall Street gamblers? The typical soldier in the army of retail traders upending Wall Street is a 31-year old who grabs their smartphone seven times a day to check the assets in their first-ever brokerage account, which may well hold a good chunk of cryptocurrencies in addition to stocks. It is the excitement of the chase, the thrill of beating the paid “professionals” and the fun of doing the opposite of what investment wise men and women profess from experience. When the general stock and crypto markets are booming, neophytes will jump at anything with a good story. Hey why not put down some money since everyone else is. When the ‘other shoe’ drops and markets go against these new players, who will they blame? Will these new gamblers stay pat or run for the hills when their accounts fall. New gamblers are not your typical ‘buy and hold’ investors so new BDs may not survive when buying stops. Gamblers usually don’t know the time-honored “regression to the mean” so they may be financially crippled.

The Don took away our protection from Wall Street

The Don just took away your best protection from greedy Wall Street
Trump killed the Fiduciary Rule, requiring financial advisers to act in the “best interests of their clients in retirement planning.” And you thought your advisor was doing that all along. And what is wrong with acting in our best interests? Well, the sales people are required to fill out forms when they gouge you on the sale of an annuity for instance. Of course the industry says the little guy will not even get an appointment if we can’t charge high fees for accounts under $500,000. Most firms have already made changes that provide the same products. They just charge the lower fee over a longer period of time. So, instead of 6% up front, you would pay 1% for ever—10-20 years. Wall Street is never going to provide a regular person with products that give them the best deal. They can’t. You will always pay more for products from a full service firm. The overhead in their offices and salesman pay demand high-fee products. Plus Wall Street is not a not-for-profit. Obama’s Fiduciary Rule asked advisors to act more like a trustee than a “boiler room” Wolf to protect you. Trump killed the Rule—cabinet are all Wall Streeters.

FREE tax preparation
Advertising to you is how they pay for free credit score and “free” tax prep
https://www.creditkarma.com/ needs your eyes to obtain dollars from sellers of financial services and they give you software to file federal and state taxes at no cost. If you need to file a simple return, this is the cheapest way. Usually simple means you have W-2 income and no home deductions. The IRS has a topic look up so you can find the answer to your question easier than waiting on the telephone for an operator to answer:  https://taxmap.ntis.gov/taxmap/. You can do your federal online FREE using commercial sites through the IRS https://www.irs.gov/uac/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free. These sites charge for a state return. You can also use a local AARP tax aide office: http://www.aarp.org/money/taxes/aarp_taxaide/ AARP does not discriminate by age or income so they can usually take care of most people. Best tip: deduction for IRA contributions and tax credit up to $2,000 subtracted from tax you owe. Double Your Pleasure.
(By the way, IRS does not call or email you. Scammers DO call and threaten.)

The Don’s Wall will cost us a lot more than he says.
Trade tax of 20% will raise cost of your car, appliances, etc. See list of imports.
Trump’s 20% tax on all imports from Mexico will cost us more and endanger 6-14 million American jobs. We make things with stuff from Mexico. The Don is wrong about America losing to Mexico. We get more of the benefit of trade with Mexico than the Mexicans. Your vehicle, like all of us, is an immigrant. All new cars are made inside and outside the US. Many parts your mechanic uses to fix and maintain your car come from Mexico. If Trump starts a global trade war with his Wall, we will lose jobs because we make things with imports. Look at what happened with Bush II tariffs on China steel in 2002. It reduced our exports cutting another 500,000 jobs HERE not there.
It's up to us to prosper despite The Don's 'economy' for the rich.

The Don’s tax reform will give the 1%ers HALF the benefits
"If you look at the most wealthy, the top 1 percent would get about half of the benefits of his tax cuts, and a millionaire, for example, would get an average tax cut of $317,000," one tax expert says. Trump’s assumption is that wealthy people will invest and corporations will produce more and create jobs. However, right now corporations are using their excess profits to ‘un-build’ and reduce payrolls through automation. Every willing worker is employed but at a lower wage (with inflation) than in the 1980s. Even 2 income families have no higher income to buy more goods. The wealthy are using their greater wealth to buy art and property—not create jobs. So over time, because the deficit will grow at a faster pace, America will actually lose jobs. Growth spurts cannot be sustained without greater participation by new and working Americans earning more. Higher deficits require higher interest payments and thus greater taxes the rich don’t pay.

Robo-advisors help wealthiest cut fees—earn more
“Our research consistently shows that robo-advisors are becoming increasingly accepted by wealthy investors,” said Spectrem. “To remain competitive, traditional advisors should lead with their unique expertise in establishing a financial plan and emphasize their ability to evaluate and react to world events.” But advisors like MorganStanley want fees from ETF indexes so client fees double—advisor plus index manager. Among the robo-users, almost half were directed to use digital advice by a human financial advisor. Just 13 percent reported using a robo as their primary advisor. While 41 percent of robo-users were self-directed investors, a larger portion, 43 percent, described themselves “event-driven”—likely to seek professional advice for specific needs like saving for retirement or asset allocation. But advisors despite fees still can’t foretell the future.

Did you lose something?
Another way to find money that is yours but you didn’t know it existed. Try site ClaimDog.com a free service that simplifies the process of finding “unclaimed property.” Using your name and all the states you have lived in, it does a search of public records. Because this is property you probably never heard you owned it could be anything: a rebate check or a forgotten safe deposit box. There are other services but they charge to find your stuff. Also try the state sites with searchable database. For example, http://www.osc.state.ny.us/ouf/ had an old tax refund of mine worth $668. I guess when I moved they did not have my new address. Another time I had a telephone company refund coming.
Unclaimed property is one of thousands of savings ideas: https://www.amazon.com/Financial-Bargain-Book-Save-000/dp/1517264936

GOP tax plan: cut income taxes for the rich; raise sales and use taxes for us
OH has joined KS in giving the wealthy more while taking more from the rest. Ohio Gov. John Kasich proposed an increase in sales and other taxes to pay for a 17% income-tax cut—mostly for the rich. The GOP will increase the state sales tax by a half-cent to 6.25 percent and increase taxes on cigarettes, vaping products, alcoholic beverages and oil and natural gas produced by fracking. KS is going bankrupt from their “socialism for the rich” tax cut in 2012. They had to raise taxes for the budget and hit up the citizens who drive, smoke and drink. NJ raised gas taxes 23 cents to continue the “millionaire” tax cut. CA did the opposite and is prospering. Trump has proposed a 20% hike in tax of imports while giving his class a huge tax break. KS “inspires” GOP to cut health plan supports.

Vanguard cuts fees again
Increasing flow of investments from managed funds to low-cost Vanguard funds, the client-owned mutual fund company has lowered fees on 21 more. The move will save investors $25 million. The money management industry has been in a fee fight, with Vanguard putting pressure on the likes of Fidelity, BlackRock and Schwab as they duke it out for increasingly cost-conscious investors. The Vanguard 500 Index provided 11.9% return in 2016 and 10.9% a year since 1976. The 500 Index of the top 500 US companies is one of the Vanguard Top Ten. You get more of your earnings back with fewer fees.

Can the republic survive to 2020
Half The Don’s subjects think the emperor has no clothes or worse.
The Don’s investigation of voter fraud comes from his misunderstanding the law. He assumes those registered in 2 states vote twice and all the dead people on the rolls are voting. His top 5 inner circle are all registered in 2 states because it is not illegal. Dead people can’t remove themselves from lists because they are dead and don’t vote.
CIA, Jt Chiefs, National Intelligence booted out. It’s a “political correctness” Council.
The world sees America differently than “leader of the free world” now. ISIS celebrates?

We are entering the Twilight Zone:
"There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadowbetween science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone."
Rod Serling

Remember, Don Trump is still a contractor from Queens NY, just richer than most. Most of his income is from lending his wealth “brand” to other’s buildings and golf ranges.
The Don will fire you or not pay if you don’t do as he says.

Like mafia family, The Don has never had a boss, no corporate board to question his acts!
“Trust only family” “I'd love to have Jared helping us on deals with other nations and see if we can do peace in the Middle East

The Don keeps  “friends” (the mob) closer than enemies: banks own his future income and Putin could buy up his markers. We worry about conflicts of interest.
He charges that our own CIA acted like Nazis in leaking spy investigation then blames media for bad relations. “Media is the enemy”

The Don decides that any news he can’t manipulate is Fake News
I won’t take your question. Fake news”
His own Obama birther Fake news got him fame and millions of white supporters.

Wall is “idiotic” according to a real builder.
Miami real estate head Jorge Perez said he declined an invitation by Trump to help build a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico, describing the plan as “idiotic.”

Reduce your taxes like President Trump

Reduce your taxes like President Trump
President Trump has said: "I fight very hard to pay as little tax as possible" because "that makes me smart." If I did pay taxes, "it would be squandered, too, believe me." Be smart:
Converting part of your IRA to a Roth will provide future income without the income tax. Converting $10,000 today (pay $1,500 tax) and spend $24,000 in 10 years (after age 60). You can spend it all and not pay the $3,600 tax on $24,000. You could use this lump sum for a vacation or your grandson’s education or just leave it to grow into a handsome legacy for your heirs. Since this money is not taxable you may avoid tax on your other income too. For instance, SS benefits are taxable if your income is over $32,000 ($25,000 single). If you were to convert $10K IRA money every year for 10 years, you will have turned $100,000 TAXABLE income into $250,000 FREE of TAX. Since you must take IRA money at age 70.5 anyway, taking it earlier will lessen the “forced” distribution and thus less tax. You may convert any amount any year. You can fund a Roth IRA now and not have to convert later.

We never did get to see The Don’s tax returns
He said they don’t matter to his voters and he was right. So now he, as head of IRS, won’t be finishing the audit on himself and he will get away with not paying his fair share. He deducted about $1 billion of other people’s money and gets to keep all of his income from TV and using his name on things for 20 years. His tax plan includes huge tax breaks for the wealthy. The top 1% would get about half the benefits of his tax cut. People with $3.7 million or more in annual income would receive $1 million in annual tax savings. Deficits will soar unless the rich create tax payer jobs here. (This has not worked in KS which gave businesses 0 taxes in 2012.) However, if the created jobs are low-pay, like in Texas, no new tax revenue would be created. Since The Don will cut corporate taxes, new middle class taxes will go up and less-advantaged assistance programs will be cut. GOP has already targeted ObamaCare, Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security.

The Don’s excuse for not paying taxes: “They waste the money
Can The Don stop the big business subsidies Congress relies on for their daily bread? He railed against lobbyists who get paid for subsidies. But, OH NO, he HAS them in his transition team deciding who will make the rules. Will he cancel EPA so we have dirty air, dirty water and contaminated soil? Which programs are wastes to The Don? The Don is using the same people as Bush for decisions—his first tell— “He is failing the first test, and he should be held accountable for it.” For instance, Ed Meese, a lobbyist for Heritage Foundation is setting up budget. The list goes on. Energy, Communication, Intelligence, Agriculture, etc. They even asked JP Morgan Chase Dimon to run Treasury. Hardly outsiders! Some are the ones who oversaw the financial collapse of 2007. Obama never jailed any of them. His Justice has let many bankers skate. Can The Don put any white-collar criminals in jail? If some went to jail, it might persuade banks to not take big risks. But Don has relied on them for financing his projects—3 casinos, the Plaza and scores of buildings/golfs. He used Tax Credits to avoid paying his fair share.

Where should you invest now for retirement if GOP cuts Social Security?
Ryan and House members will now have a “mandate” to cut our “entitlements” since The Don will be spending on other projects. Without cuts in Social Security and Medicare, the GOP would need to raise taxes. Where can you put your money so that you can supplement the cuts in your future Social Security benefits? One alternative is to use a balanced fund that makes you owner of stocks and bonds. One of the best is the Vanguard Wellesley Income fund. It has returned 9.8% since 1970--7% in 2016 so far.

Remember when The Don was against hedge fund operators?
No longer. Now they are in the government. He said: “Hedge fund guys are getting away with murder.” One of Trump’s friend/backer, hedge fund owner, Steven Mnuchin, is even a contender for Treasury secretary. “That nonsense is ending: the anti-banking cabal and the screed of hatred for people that live on Wall Street,” Anthony Scaramucci, a well-known money manager who is on the transition team, said last week following Trump’s victory. Mnuchin, a former hedge fund manager and partner and Goldman Sachs Group Inc., is a top candidate to lead Treasury; he served as Trump’s campaign finance chief. John Paulson, who made billions when the housing market collapsed, is an economic adviser; he was a Trump donor and has been pushing for changes to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the U.S. mortgage giants. Rebekah Mercer, the daughter of hedge-fund magnate Robert Mercer, is on Trump’s transition team. Carl Icahn, investor, has also backed Trump, hoping the candidate will rein in Environmental Protection Agency rules, which he says harm refiners like CVR Refining LP, where he has a controlling stake. His wife, Gail, has been named to the inauguration team.
Lies, all lies.

Can Wall Street learn to put our needs ahead of their own?
Obama tried to reform the Wolf of Wall Street so that they would not collapse our financial system again. When you are setting up your retirement income from 401k and IRA accounts, the Wolf used to take a big bite—5-10%. Now it can eat up to 63% of your investment portfolio. Obama’s retirement div put out rules to protect vulnerable senior’s nest eggs from the Wolf. Will Trump destroy the Fiduciary Rule as part of the industry lobby to repeal Dodd-Frank? Fiduciary means advisors put your interest before their own. This rule does not mean advisors can’t overcharge on all other products. It does not mean they can’t charge fees for years after the sale of retirement products. In fact Chase and other banks have already said they will stop commissions and charge annual fees forever instead. Instead of paying 5-10% up front, you will pay an extra 1% per year. Chase and BoAmerica could take 10-15% over the life of your account. The Wolf cannot help taking the whole cake—now just one bite at a time--forever.

Which Part D plan is right for you?
When comparing Part D plans, make sure the copay for your drug is reasonable. The AARP tested the difference between the copays for 30 day supply of 5 drugs in 5 states. The diffence in what you will pay is astounding: We pay $569 or $27 for the same Procrit 4,000 ml in FL amoung 20 plans. Large differences in copays for the same drug within a state not to mention in the same country leads any reasonable person to believe America has a problem. Trump used to rail about this problem. The problem was highlighted by the recent scandal over EpiPen. Do you spend all of your monthly budget for this lifesaver or let your kid go to the hospital so your family can eat? In England the same medicine costs $69. It actually costs $30 to make and we add $6 profit: $36. Someone or other is making a killing. If you are a millionaire Congressman or you earn $423,345 as a 1%er then $600 for Epipen is no problem. However, for most of us, medicine is like water and air—a necessity that should not be exploited. Can Trump make drugs affordable for the ‘forgotten’ family?

The Don says he will NOT take his $400,000 salary plus benefits
Taking a salary means having your taxes withheld. The Don does not pay taxes. However, he may not realize there is a large pension too. Seems unwise to refuse $½ million extra cash. Not all his job’s expenses are covered by the govnmt. We pay presidents for the rest of their lives even though they don’t need it—well maybe Jimmy Carter. A fixed income for 30 or 40 years is over $7 million without inflation rider. We can create a fixed monthly payment without having to pay the high annuity fees of 2-4%. Tea Party controls House, Senate, President, courts, Supremes--Finally got to be rulers
If you are wealthy and hate government, you win. Most of us will grit teeth for 4 years. Trump’s Teas will cut programs that benefit older adults and younger people with disabilities, including Medicaid, Older Americans Act such as Meals on Wheels, adult day, information assistance. Don said he would leave Social Security and Medicare alone but he said many contra things. Teas have targeted all programs for disadvantaged like ObamaCare. Don may not resist their cuts especially if economy falters. He does not like losers. 20 million will have no health care. "You're not going to let people die sitting in the middle of the street." He made fun of disabled, banned unfavorable press firms, and attacked certain minorities, judges, laws, departments he did not like. His tax plan reduces taxes for very rich but his advisor says if growth does not come, middleclass tax increase will be necessary to balance budget. Christie just raised gas tax in NJ and let millionaire tax cut stay. He ended the estate tax for rich. Christie may be Don’s whip in Congress. He claims he can make Dems give in.

We are entering the Twilight Zone:
"There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone."

            THE TRUMP PROMISES

The Don’s 1st test: Replace job paying $23/hr Carrier move to Mexico—he promised.
CarrierMexico will pay $25/DAY. Automation, computers, math.
He made Carrier the poster child and “we’re going to hold him to it.”
We want change: “It could have been Captain Kangaroo and he might have won.”

Deportations begin: “get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers, where a lot of these people, probably 2 million, it could be even 3 million, we are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate.”

Wall is too expensive—settle for a fence: Tax cuts for rich/corporations mean no money

NATO EU UN defunding: Weakening NATO, EU and UN ties is Putin’s goal in regaining Russia’s superpower status. The Don has been flattered by KGB: no friend.

Trump kids become national security advisors—get top-secret clearance. Guiliani claims “they can’t work in the government because of the government rule against nepotism.” But they can use the information in Trump Corps and insider trading.

Ford will still build $2 billion factory in Mexico but does not send KY jobs there yet.

Teas have finally gotten their wish! Congress and WH are anti-govt but paid.
The Don’s “cabinet” are scary group

Jeff Sessions top law officer, was rejected for judgeships by GOP because racist remarks:
Sessions had referred to the N.A.A.C.P., the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and other civil rights groups as “un-American” and “Communist-inspired.” An African-American federal prosecutor then, Thomas H. Figures, said Mr. Sessions had referred to him as “boy” and testified that Sessions said the Ku Klux Klan was fine “until I found out they smoked pot.” He does not like the Voting Rights Act and the stringent oversight it placed on Southern states.

Mike Flynn, national security adviser, thinks that Shariah, or Islamic law, is spreading in the United States (it is not). His dubious assertions are so common that when he ran the Defense Intelligence Agency, subordinates came up with a name for the phenomenon: They called them “Flynn facts.” Flynn thinks Putin is an ally in fight against ISL. He worked for Russia Today, a Kremlin TV network. He was leading chants of “lock her up” against Hillary Clinton at rallies for The Don.

Mike Pompeo, CIA director, House Intelligence Committee, gained prominence for his role in the congressional investigation into the 2012 attack on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. He was a sharp critic of Hillary Clinton and thinks there was a cover-up. When the committee found no new evidence of wrongdoing by the Obama administration or Mrs. Clinton, Mr. Pompeo and Mr. Jordan filed a 48-page addendum that included far harsher criticism. Regarding the Iran anti-nuclear agreement, Pompeo thinks we should “walk away from this deal.” He has ties to the Kochs, the billionaire conservatives whose Koch Industries has provided his funding.

Myron Ebell, EPA, is a climate-change denier who directs the Center for Energy and Environment at the Competitive Enterprise Institute. The group's website, SafeChemicalPolicy.org, exists to downplay the health and ecological impacts of chemicals. “Pesticides aren’t bad for you.” “Honeybees decline not linked to pesticides.”

I am the only one who knows who the finalists are!”
