Tax-FREE account for retirement income

Make the New Year better

Is automatic bill pay right for you?

There are severe penalties for not paying your bills on time. You will get hit with charges, interest and lower credit bureau scores in many situations. You also may be paying higher mailing rates. How do you avoid this situation? Your bank may offer auto bill pay. I have been using this for about 10 years. Using your checking or business account as the source, you set up a vendor account with the name and address of the entity you owe. My monthly house mortgage loan is paid to Quicken at the same amount each 1st of the month. The bank posts this amount the Quicken’s bank by the 1st automatically. I do nothing after I set the amount monthly. For credit cards with different amounts, I enter the amount when I get the bill and set the date I wish the amount to arrive at the card’s address. For all others (utilities, doctors, newspapers, insurance, and individuals), I decide the amount and time to arrive at their address. All I have to do is have all my income deposited directly into my checking account. Some times I have to move money from my savings to my checking for emergency bills. Sometimes I have to reimburse my daughter and (she me) via direct transfers or Zelle. Her account is at the same bank but I can do a transfer to another person at their bank for large fee. The best part is I have monthly records on paper and any period totals digitally. I can also find and print any transaction during the past 12 months. I don’t pay extra for auto bill pay since the bank has my money from direct deposit. In fact I have saved over $50 since starting.

New Year fresh start for your kids/grandkids

Make sure you teach your kids how to create wealth the easy way. My parents were not investors. At my first job, I had no clue which investment option to use for my 401k contribution and company match. The HR person told me to put it into the 'safe' stable value fund. That was the worst choice at my age I learned later when I got my securities licenses. If I had followed their advice I would have ended up with $150,000 instead of a Wealth Reserve of $877,233 about 33 years later. We have used this 'Wealth Reserve' as I call it to have funds to use low-cost high-deductible insurance, to buy two homes and 5 cars with higher down payments or cash, and now to receive $2,500 a monthly in a retirement supplement. Your kids use the Buffett investment strategy for any amateur. Buffett recently proved his method, though simple, beat the strategies of the best hedge funds. Start with only $1,000.

2022: another stock market high?

You may have noticed that your 500 index fund returned about 29% last year. Your real estate index fund provided 40% return. Like 2019, 2017 and 2013, these highs might start convincing you that an average for this period of 17% might continue. Using the 500 index would have quadrupled your retirement nest egg. But before you get greedy, you might want to move some of those gains to a balanced account like Wellesley Income Fund. This low-cost managed fund has provided steady income to retirees since 1970. This balance of stocks and bonds could help you through the anxiety of 2022 since the Fed (US gov money manager) will stop pumping up Wall Street firms and will increase interest rates soon. This situation has already changed market forecasts so you know we are not likely to be so lucky in ’22. Remember the cardinal rule of managing money, especially in lower return periods: low-cost beats high-cost in every period.

What is your retirement dream?

Travel, hobbies, family, business, volunteer, keep favorite job, other? No matter your dream your first concern is health. Our dream can motivate us to save for the time when we don’t NEED to work at a job for money. Thus there are folks who have prioritized saving over spending, even when family obligations are great. Take the story of the Howell family highlighted in a recent Money newsletter: the Howell's could save 21% of salary and put kids thru college. Randy retired at age 56 from a variety of labor and management positions with United Parcel Service, and LuAnne worked as a school secretary. They enjoy hiking and other outdoor activities. However, without a health plan from work, it is doubtful they could have retired early to do what they wanted to do. For other folks, what happens when their health requires them to interrupt their plans? Our health system is a ‘for profit’ system so that my health needs are in conflict with the industry need for profits. I, NOT them, will suffer when I can’t afford to maintain my health. My dream is crippled while they earn more. The need for affordable health insurance becomes the No 1 priority for America.

Is using a 401k brokerage account right for you?

New research by Empower shows that while the average age of participants using the brokerage account is higher than average, the effect has to do with older participants having higher incomes and balances rather than just because they are older. This makes sense from the view that buying individual securities when you already have a nest egg built up provides some further diversification or specialization. One reader had 80% of their 401k money in a low cost S&P 500 index while they continued to buy DMYI which is involved in quantum computers. This arrangement is sometimes called a “hub and spoke” strategy. Any loss in the spoke does not destroy the wheel.

Which used cars to buy now?

Vehicle dependability is at an all-time high, according to the J.D. Power 2021 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. Owners of 2018 models reported on the number of problems they have had. Lexus, Porsche, Kia, Toyota head the list. Rover, Jaguar, Chrysler come in last. By the way, Jeep, Dodge Chrysler, is now stellantis. Because of the lack of chips for new cars, used car prices have gone up to meet the demand. However, if you are looking for a bargain, you need to compare this list to the list of vehicles from iSeeCars that depreciated more than 1.3 times the 39.1% average three-year depreciation for all vehicles. This list shows that Audi 6, Ford Fusion Hybrid, BMW 3, and Volvo S60 lost the most value. In 3 years, these cars lost over HALF of their value. However, one vehicle shows up on both lists: Lincoln MKZ. The Lincoln MKZ was discontinued after the 2020 model year, which shows that demand isn’t high for this vehicle perhaps because it isn’t as luxurious as its competitors. However, at $21,500, the used Lincoln may be a bargain since you have some dependable lux at a reasonable price. Avoid flooded ones. Shop around for insurance. High deductible reduces premium. Save $22,000 over time.

Are buying art, wine, gold the right investments for you?

Many internet blogs run by journalists provide misleading investment advice to sell clicks to other for profit sites. Example: 6 Brilliant Ways to Build Wealth After 40 Misleading advice 1: Invest in art that has outperformed the S&P by over 180%. Claiming that wealthy people make huge profits, the authors don’t cite which art they mean and how much the rich paid for the art. 2: Get $10 by starting to invest in Apple, Tesla, Amazon. The fees for investing small amounts may take all your profits and won’t build wealth. A free index account of the top 500 stocks may build wealth over time using the Miracle of Compounding. 3: Buy gold from a dealer to avoid volatility. The authors don’t explain that gold prices fluctuate too. The dealer fees may also take all your profits. 4: Shopping for car insurance can save you money but you need to shop the carriers directly not from the editors of this blog. Each carrier has their own discounts/rates. 5: Buy wine from their firm for an investment return of 10.6%. Speculating on bottles of wine is not smart no matter what “sommelier knowledge with AI-driven algorithms” they use. 6: Stop overpaying for stuff online. Using a browser extension, you can save on some goods. However, when I used it I found that the pop up usually shows the same price on Amazon or at another site but without adding in the shipping costs. Since I have paid for shipping with Prime, the alternative was misleading and I needed to create another seller account. 7: Invest in real estate and art through a 3rd party to earn “passive income.” Low-cost index accounts with no 3rd party fees provide these important diversification asset classes. However, the authors don’t explain the fees charged on the interest income paid.

Should the wealthy pay Social Security too?

Is it time to have the wealthy pay the Social Security tax too?
On our pay stubs it lists FICA—the Social Security tax we all pay. Well not all—the wealthy stop paying the tax when the tax becomes ‘serious.’ For 2019, the maximum wage base is $132,900. They pay nothing on most of their income. But now that most of us wage earners are paying a higher rate than the wealthy, isn’t it time for them to pay their fair share? Since our incomes have remained flat since the 1960s, we cannot save for retirement like we used to. We have no more employer-funded pensions. More of us are relying on Social Security for the bulk of our retirement income but few of us can live on $1,460 a month. It would only be fair for those earning over $132,000 to pay the same rate as we do. We all should pay the 6.2% we pay. The income tax is no longer a progressive tax. More of us pay 32.9% compared with less than 20% that the wealthy pay. As Buffett pointed out, he pays only 17.7% with no special tax shelter. Corporations like Apple, Google, Amazon, Boeing, and GE have overseas shelters to hide their incomes. So 2/3rds of all businesses pay $0 tax. Plus we taxpayers must subsidize many profitable businesses like oil, gas, agribusiness, air carriers, etc, etc. Many aren’t even American. It is time for the wealthy to contribute to this society like they once did. Besides, they will never miss the 6.2% of income anyway. We all need a tax shelter.

Why do car dealers make the financing so ‘sweet’-looking?
Low payments for 84 months make your dealer the highest profit--$982 on finance and insurance. The dealer’s F&I person is one of the highest paid. The salesperson is just the demonstrator since they don’t have the actual financial contract details. They don’t know your credit score so can’t make the deal. So negotiate everything with the real seller, not the salesperson. It is the person who can change your financial deal. They are the most important person in the deal. When I bought my used Camry, the salesperson failed to disclose a bad battery and damage to the backseat upholstery. When I was handed off to the F&I lady, I asked for an extra $500 off so I could live with the ‘bad’ upholstery. I had to charge my own battery to drive back so they could replace the battery. This dealer did not have bad ratings. I told them I would pay cash for the deal but they said they would redo the deal if I financed. I financed half the deal and then paid it off within 6 months using my HELOC to save money. Extras like ‘gap’ and glass coverage in a car deal are where they make their profits. Extras like health and life coverage in vehicle insurance are where insurers make profits. Decline the extras. Ask for each discount by name.

Is ‘sector rotation’ right for you?
This is a market timing strategy involving the movement of money from one industry sector to another in an attempt to beat the market. However, you know how well market timing and forecasting has done in the past. It does not work. This strategy took root in the past when some investors noticed that the ‘business cycle’ has winners and losers. Since it is impossible to predict what happens to individual equities, this strategy thinks whole industries rise and fall together. Consider the Callan Periodic Table: https://www.callan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Classic-Periodic-Table-2019.pdf.
Can you see the pattern? I can’t either. How about this chart of market returns? https://www.businessinsider.com/typical-investor-returns-20-years-2014-8. There seems to be some pattern here—at least for this 20 year period. This pattern says buy Energy, Health, Info Tech, Small Cap Value ONLY since the returns are above 10%. However, most of us are barely earning above inflation probably because we try to time the market. And lately, these 4 sectors have done poorly. So we should stop trying to time the market and listen to Buffett. He maintains that we win if we are patient. In fact he won a $million bet recently by betting on the top 500 stocks OF ALL INDUSTRIES. Forget Wall Street strategies and take the 21.5% YTD from Buffett’s favorite index fund.

Is your advisor’s firm cited for lack of controls?
Officials at FINRA the financial industry ‘self-regulatory’ body have cited a number of unnamed firms as having “nonexistent supervision” allowing salespeople to take advantage of customers who have no idea what they are buying. Firms let reps ‘run amok’ without any idea what goes on in their branches. They don’t even correct the mistakes that they find. Unfortunately, this report keeps the firm’s name secret so that the report does no one any good. We can’t avoid the firms that will let their staff steal from us and the firms can hide their misdeeds from public pressure. There is no incentive for the unscrupulous firms to get better. Obviously, the SEC authorities have done nothing to change their behavior over the years they have had the legal means to do so or we wouldn’t be in this spot after numerous reports on the same firm malfeasance. One of the FINRA staff told me they never divulge the violators. Clearly, this organization has no interest in cleaning up its own industry. Avoid the unscrupulous firms and advisors.

10 vehicles you might want to avoid
These models and perhaps they’re parts will not be available in the future. On the other hand, you may be able to pick up a bargain if you are flexible: Volkswagen Beetle and Golf-based SportWagen, Ford Taurus and Fiesta, Chevrolet Volt and Cruze, Cadillac ATS Coupe and CT5, Lincoln MKT, Buick Opel Cascada. Instead, consider the current best sellers like Hyundai Elantra: https://www.kbb.com/car-reviews-and-news/top-10/25-best-selling-cars-trucks-suvs/2100006323.

How long to hold stocks?

How long do we have to hold stocks to win with stocks?
Wall Street media gives the impression that we should sell just before they go down when an analyst thinks they will. But analysts can’t see the future. So we follow someone’s ‘advice’ or the crowd and we lose. Guess what happens? Advisor-managed equity accounts earn 5.19-3.79% vs 9-11% for a simple market index fund of stocks that remain for long periods. What does one of the most successful investors say: he says hold them “forever.” He bet $1 million against a Wall Street guru to prove it. He has owned Coke since the 1980s; Geico since 1996; Amex since the 1960s; and many more. How has Buffett done so far? His average return is 20.5% per year since 1965. Not bad.

How do millionaires start their savings plan?
Unless you inherit your father’s $413 million you must start your $1,000,000 fund somehow. Survey says save 10% of income is how you begin. 80% of the self-made millionaires studied didn't get wealthy until after age 50 — but that almost all of them started the same way. They used ‘buckets’ to make their goals specific. Each bucket has a specific saving/investing vehicle. Short-term expenses are funded from savings and CDs while retirement expenses are funded with low-cost securities. The rich increased their savings as their income increased meaning that they learned to live within their means—80% of income for current expenses and 20% for the future. Millionaires understand the Miracle of Compounding. Stocks earn 11% a year: $1 million in 34-36 years; $2 million in 40. If Don had just used a stock index he would have $11 Billion by now, not $3 Bn.

Not all S&P 500 index funds give great returns
Unfortunately, not all S&P 500 index funds act the same. Some don’t follow the benchmark so they don’t produce 11% over time. DALBAR tracks the index and equity account returns over time. So we know some employers use an index fund in their 401k plan that actually doesn’t follow the benchmark they are supposed to track. Insurers in particular are providing expensive or poorly designed index funds to smaller employers. Employees are suing Community Health Systems since it uses Principal Large Cap S&P 500 index fund. This fund allegedly lagged its benchmark by an average 9.1 basis points between 2010 and 2018, while similar funds offered by BlackRock, Vanguard Group, State Street and Northern Trust lagged by roughly 1 to 2 basis points on average. This underperformance, plaintiffs claimed, led to poor performance that lost participants some of their retirement savings. Over long periods of poor tracking and or high fees, employers actually cut employee retirement packages by 63%. For some employees, it would be better to use a self-directed Roth IRA account instead of the company’s plan. A Roth IRA is tax-FREE after age 59.5. It can earn 11% over time.

Why do the most expensive cars have the most problems?
Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Jaguar, Acura. These are some of the most expensive cars you can buy. So why did JD Power survey of owners find they have more than average problems? The annual J.D. Power study gauges dependability of 3-year-old vehicles over the last 12 months, meaning this year's survey assessed the 2016 model year. Let’s look at management/owners for the answer. Lexus and Toyota seem to be consistently near the top of the list of fewest problems. Who owns the bottom feeders? Fiat, the most problems, owns Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Ferrari, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, and Ram. Tata owns Jaguar and Land Rover. Zhejiang Geely owns Volvo. Ford owns Lincoln. Honda has Acura which is usually high on the list. BMW owns Mini and Rolls Royce. Renault owns Nissan and Infiniti. VW owns Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT and Skoda. Management determines how well it’s built.

First time in US: $50K a year earners now pay higher tax rate than Billionaires
US is no longer a progressive tax country. Trump has given his class what they wanted. The TV celeb has reversed most progressive trends. As Warren Buffett illustrated, his assistants pay a higher rate than he does: they pay 32.9%; he pays 17.7% with no special tax shelter or overseas account like Apple, Google, Amazon, Boeing, GE, etc. 2/3rds of all businesses pay $0 tax. Plus we taxpayers must subsidize many profitable businesses like oil, gas, agribusiness, air carriers, etc, etc. Many aren’t even American.

Trump's own agency says ObamaCare is working

Trump’s own agency says ObamaCare is working
Facts are hard things: The “failing” Affordable Care Act is NOT failing, according to HHS and Trumper Tom Price. What may be more embarrassing to the hardliners pushing repeal is that it comes from Trump’s own agency. Secretary Tom Price has been the source of anti-ACA propaganda. But in an annual report about the, Health and Human Services established that the key programs are “working as intended,” protecting insurers from unexpectedly large risks and moderating premiums for consumers. For those of us who have relatives on the exchanges, ObamaCare is a godsend. Unlike millionaire Congress people, (some with $445 millions) our family members with pre-existing or long-term disabilities could NOT get better without it. As our moderate reps have said, Obama’s ACA needs some repair. But so did Medicare when it began and look at it now. Most participants love it but there are always complainers. Congressmen get pregnancy cover under ObamaCare FREE.
The GOP’s strategy to repeal and replace has confirmed:
America is ready for universal health care. Just like car and house insurance, when you need it you won’t complain about paying for someone else’s house fire every year. A woman answered Congressman Rod Blum IA who repeated GOP propaganda: “why should a 63 year old pay for something as "crazy" as pregnancy insurance: "Why should I pay the salaries of politicians I didn't vote for, a tax cut that doesn't affect me, or a loophole I can't take advantage of? It's called democracy, a civil society, the greater good. That's what we pay for."

TrumpCare was really a tax cut bill—why not fix health care?
Rich people can buy concierge health care. That is why they need GOP tax cuts. For the rest of us, experts could solve our health crisis but we need to ban lobbyists and special interests from the room. Costs need to be contained. Up to now, GOP and DEM proposed lowering premiums not by reining in costs, but by allowing insurers to sell ‘junk’. This leaves us on the hook when we really need comprehensive coverage. Cruz would not buy ‘junk’ policy for his family but OK for us? Trump wants to spend $ millions on UK baby but not one cent on Medicaid baby. Subsidies can make up the difference in costs based on age and income. We can buy drugs overseas for 60% less and in a free market we should. Bush was wrong to create price controls. No need to cut taxes for the rich—they are getting richer every day. Instead they pay taxes because “taxes are the cost of society.” For regions where there are few insurers to offer options, Medicare can be provided. GOP mandate needs to be sold to young like any new program. Medicare can negotiate the price of testing and screening in each region. Right now, gouging is common practice. Think EpiPen and hip replacement. Life Liberty Pursuit of Happiness is the guarantee. Can’t have them without health care.
The solution to our health care is up for vote in 2020.

Can your investment plan carry you to age 100?
Every year you delay costs you $100,000 later
Attitude and genes have everything to do with living longer. Many retirees work past our assumed “retirement” age. Many work because they love it; others because they have to. Most realize our early-in-life choices determine our financial fitness for the future.
Example: invest just 10% from your first job onward and you will have enough later. A low-cost stock index fund has grown at 11% over time so your money doubles every 8-10 years IF you leave it alone to compound.
You can use an IRS-approved trust that makes all your earnings FREE of income tax for the rest of your life. Social Security will cut benefits by 2034 and income taxes will have to pay for the deficit of $161,000 each. Taxes don’t go down for us. Only the rich can afford to cut their taxes by living off capital. You can die without ObamaCare.

Trump’s quest for our voting records and personal info
The Don seems to be after a national database of real GOP Americans. He and his followers want to know who I voted for so I can be tapped for money or taken off the rolls. 44 states said NO. Given that Putin is inside the Oval Office now, could this database be hacked for another purpose. Hitler was successful in making lists—ethnic, religious, civic, social, financial etc to roundup when the time came. He used a ‘safety’ excuse too—to protect our national voting integrity. Why not let the states control the voting process as per the Constitution. The Don’s new bureaucracy cannot protect the data and we surely don’t need another Government Agency. Some adult needs to read the numerous studies on voter fraud to Don so he understands the situation. His only ‘proof’ was the many staff members in his palace are registered to vote in more than one state. This is not illegal as Jared, Steve, Stephen, Sean and his own daughter can tell him. FL tried to get rid of DEMs this way in 2012 and embarrassed itself. Mississippi rejected the request on privacy and states' rights grounds. “They can go jump in the Gulf of Mexico,” MS said.
This is how fascism starts—a policy the Leader says is for ‘voter integrity’ but really to eliminate votes by minority and poor voters.

Which index fund or ETF is right for you?
The financial industry promotes the use of ETFs for your broker account. Exchange Traded Funds are index funds set up to track an index but to be traded for commissions or fees. Mutual funds typically settle at the end of the day. If you sell at 10AM your shares are not redeemed until after 4PM. Both types of index funds also have annual fees. You can try to time the market ebb and flow with either one. However, with some funds, you are restricted from frequent trading. Statistically, you can maximize your long-term accumulation using a broad market fund with low fees and no trading. You can pay 0.04% or less for this kind of fund. That’s $4 per $10,000. Over time, this is probably your best deal for retirement dollars. This might be a good choice for your 401k and IRA. If you feel like beating all the other 6 million traders, use the ETF of the market segment you think will expand—maybe energy or health—in your brokerage account. You may pay more. You could time the market badly. Just to illustrate how this might work for you, if you invested $250 a month in a low-cost index fund, you could have $1 million in about 34 years. The average managed account earned just 3.79% a year over time.

12 cars for family are best buys
2017 models provide quality transport at price points to $28,000. Some of these have long-term mileage records so you don’t have to worry about value on trade in. Most are old stand bys: Honda, Chevy, Toyota but Kia and sister Hyundai are new. Safety and reliability are top benefits.
Most reliable picks include Toyota, Audi and Chevy according to Consumer Reports. Buy the 3 year old version and save up to 30%.
