Some “financial” writers just don’t know

Some “financial” writers just don’t know

“6 Safe and Smart Investments for Retirees” is misleading and mostly wrong. There are no “safe” investments. Even the fixed rate bank CD is subject to loss of purchasing power. That means you can’t buy what you could have 5 years or even 1 year before. Same for “tax-free” municipal bonds since bonds might end up costing you money. Lending to an individual without some security can leave you with a big loss. Peer-to-peer lending is not without risks: the borrower could default. Annuities are touted as a “safe” investment. However, you can lose money since annuities have many costs and conditions. Insurers make sure they don’t lose even if you have an emergency withdrawal. Even government I bonds have risks. The core rates are low and you will be disappointed if inflation is flat. The costs associated with being a landlord of a rental property can include the human toll of constant aggravation from tenant demands. SS benefits include an inflation-adjusted monthly payment that is good for life and backed by the government. Waiting to age 70 to claim means benefits will be much greater for life. So, every one must decide on a balance between risk and reward. Retirees will need more money for a longer period so the risk of not having enough must be addressed by continuing to invest in a diversified portfolio including stock funds.

IRA: tax-FREE or tax-deductible?

Depending on where you are in your investing life, one or the other IRA is an appropriate source of retirement income. The “traditional” IRA lets you reduce your current income so you pay fewer taxes NOW. The “Roth” IRA lets you increase your retirement income by avoiding taxes then. Thus, you have a significant choice. Given your overall income level, you can reduce income taxes during your whole working life OR you can exclude federal and state income taxes later when you may need more income. This means that depending on how you invest your Roth investments, you could have a potentially greater nest egg to spend and never pay taxes on the withdrawals. In fact you can convert the money in your traditional tax-deferred account to a Roth at a later time when it may benefit you more. The IRA expert, Ed Slott, (IRAhelp.com) can explain why a Roth conversion is his No. 1 tax tip for this year. You may need to use his site to calculate which deal is better for you at your current stage of investing.

Save $1000: maintain your vehicles

Don’t ignore “check engine” light. Keep tires at correct pressure. Change oil and regular maintenance as your manual says not as your mechanic wants. Check your PCV valve, windshield cracks, fluid leaks when parked, and any unusual noises. Save more over your car’s lifetime buy shopping for insurance every 2 years. Insurers change their marketing plan every year and it is easy to $500 every time you shop. Major carriers will cut premiums if you are able to raise your deductible. Many have over 20 discounts your agent may not tell you about (commissions are a % of premiums). Bundling policies (including “Umbrella” cover) may or may not save total premium. I have had home insurance for 30 years and would lose money by combining with other policies.

Advisors are trying to become psychologists

This advisor says people are asking: Can you help me define the next stage in my life? What’s going to be my purpose? What’s my “aspirational lifestyle”? And how does that guide my financial choices? Sounds like your therapist not your advisor. Almost all advisors have had no training in answering these questions. He thinks people are demanding humanistic advice of their financial counselor, and he thinks he as a wealth manager can use this need to grow his business. His firm partnered with Columbia University to develop an advisor training program that is based on providing a more holistic, “purpose-driven” approach to planning. It’s been incredibly popular with both advisors and clients he claims. This advisor thinks advisors need to help clients “envision their aspirational lifestyle in their next life chapter.” He says people want more financial stability in retirement. This “stability” is usually interpreted by sellers to mean annuity needed. This writer actually works for an annuity company so his remarks support the push for high-commission/fee annuity sales. And most advisors are focused on revenue growth for their firms. In fact, 72% new advisors quit as most of the training programs are very sales-based. Wall Street wants revenue not therapists.

Our Universe is Mind-Blowing

Light is both a particle and a wave depending on how we look at the light.

I don’t think that there is any such thing as a position or a velocity of a particle.

Everything (galaxies to stones) in universe made of subatomic energy ‘vibrations’

A subatomic ‘particle’ is the smallest possible vibration (quantum) of a quantum field.

Warren Buffett is your best financial advisor

Best graduation gift you can give

Make sure you teach your kids how to create wealth the easy way. My parents were not investors. At my first job, I had no clue which investment option to use for my 401k contribution and company match. The HR person told me to put it into the 'safe' stable value fund. That was the worst choice at my age I learned later when I got my securities licenses. If I had followed their advice I would have ended up with $150,000 instead of a Wealth Reserve of $877,233 about 33 years later. We have used this 'Wealth Reserve' as I call it to have funds to use low-cost high-deductible insurance, to buy two homes and 5 cars with higher down payments or cash, and now to receive at least $2,933 a monthly in a retirement supplement for the rest of our lives.

Start their ‘Wealth Reserve’: https://www.amazon.com/Give-your-child-leg-manage/dp/1096505355

Most folks in or near retirement fear outliving their money

Advisors usual solution: guaranteed income from an annuity. Because the commissions and fees can be large and are hidden, retirees usually buy these no-refund contracts. The contracts are usually thick with legal protections for the insurer and sales agent. There are more expensive provisions that may help protect you but the bottom line is that you are paying a lot of money for a stream of payments that may not overcome inflationary costs. So, for a 65 year old female with $100,000 payment, she will receive $454 a month for life. However, by age 80, her fixed $454 a month will buy about HALF the necessities it originally did. She can purchase a ‘cost-of-living’ rider like the COLA SS benefit but that reduces the amount per month. For less benefit, her heirs can get back whatever is left if she dies early (before age 86). She may need more than $227 a month for living expenses. There are better alternatives to get a regular check.

Why Warren Buffett is your best financial advisor

Mr Buffett does not need your fees and commissions. He has $ Billions. He has more experience than any paid advisor or brokerage firm. Most advisors and brokerage firms provide standard advice and portfolio models pre-packed for retail customers. Unless your wealth includes special assets totaling in the $ billions, you get the regular firm products. Sellers sell only what supplies the firm with profits. When you need specific unbiased advice you can buy it from a fiduciary for a single charge. Most of us are going to accumulate less wealth over time by paying the annual fees and charges firms need. Those who pay 1-2% a year in fees and trading mistakes will give away 50 to 60% of their possible accumulation over time. Buffett credits “compound interest” for his success. Thus your $250 a month investment can become $2 million over time IF you don’t pay for advice you don’t need. Buffett’s advice is unbiased and simple to follow. Use Buffett’s advice:https://www.amazon.com/New-American-Retirement-System-ReserveTM/dp/1461030072/

Car insurance costs go up for some people

Age is a big contributor to costs: teens pay about $5,000; seniors pay about $1,500.  Your credit score and driving record can be controlled. Your home location can raise premiums. Your vehicle and its use can be a factor in costs. There are discounts available. Your immediate control of costs is determined by the carrier you use. Shopping every 2-3 years provides you with a chance to take advantage of the marketing plans of some insurers. They often try to find drivers which their database tells them are cheaper to insure. Each year they change and so do you. Bundling may save premium while others may not. The same goes for safe-driver courses and a driver association affinity. Each has its own set of preferred driver qualifications.

Try shopping: https://www.amazon.com/Vehicle-Insurance-Beware-Double-Coverage/dp/1480027634

Is investing in real estate right for you?

Commercial real estate returns have shined during the last year despite the pandemic challenges. Like stocks, real estate investment trusts (REIT) are up 35% or more. REITs have often performed differently than stocks and bonds, so this fund may offer some diversification to a portfolio already made up of stocks and bonds. Since 2001 the Vanguard REIT has returned over 10% a year. Your contributions to a REIT inside a tax-FREE account may help you achieve a tax-FREE retirement.

Go Tax-FREE: https://www.amazon.com/Tax-FREE-Retirement-code-lifetime-income/dp/1475206976

Which mutual fund do my readers prefer?

Many of my retired and pre-retired readers prefer mutual funds that have been around for years and are managed by experts at low cost. Like John Bogle, they believe that “cost matter.” Bogle told Martin Smith of Frontline that a “2 percent fee will erode 63 percent of what you would have had” over time: 63%. That is big chunk of our nest egg. Bogle created low-cost funds for every portfolio. My readers like Vanguard Windsor Fund. Since its 1958 inception, this aggressive large-capitalization value fund has held fast to its distinctive strategy and provided 11.47% a year. Also Vanguard Wellesley Income Fund. This 50 year-old, income-oriented balanced fund offers exposure to dividend stocks and investment-grade bonds. It has provided 9.44% returns since 1970.

Pay less; keep more: https://www.amazon.com/Vanguards-Top-Ten-mutual-funds/dp/150073909X

What happens after a recession?

During a recession, stock prices typically plummet. The markets can be volatile with share prices experiencing wild swings. Investors react quickly to any hint of news—either good or bad—and the flight to safety can cause some investors to pull their money out of the stock market entirely. Since 1871, the average return has been 11% per year. You are better off betting on reversion to the mean not Bits. Fear not!

Advisors repackage old sales ideas with new hype

Active personalization is the new active investing,” announces analyst Morningstar.

Ask your advisor what “active personalization” really means. More tech mumbo-jumbo to sell standard “model” portfolios as ‘personalized’ just for you. Advisors will use “Morningstar portfolio risk score” to justify the portfolio they recommend. “They also have the Risk Profiler, which measures the level of a risk that a client is psychologically comfortable taking.” They will also offer the Risk Comfort Range—which connects your risk level to their product. They will measure your level of adherence to six sustainability themes. “With a click of button, this new optimizer is going to build a portfolio that matches your risk profile and your sustainability aspirations.” Sounds cool but you still won’t know how well you did until you see the results of all this button-pushing for a year or two. Advisors will still be paid by you no matter which button they push. Actually, low-cost indexes beat managed accounts.

Warren Buffett proved it: https://www.amazon.com/Warren-Buffetts-Investment-Strategy-Forget/dp/1484822900

How much should you invest?

The average salary is about $50,000. During our lifetime, we may earn $2.5-$3 million, depending on raises and years worked. If we invest just 6% ($3,000) in the low-cost stock market index of our 401k or IRA, we could have $2,100,000 for retirement in 40 years. If our employer matches our contribution or our spouse has a similar situation, we could have more. Given the historical rate of inflation, this amount would still allow us to spend retirement income of $45,000 (after inflation) for 30 years. We can now invest in a Tax-FREE account, approved by the IRS. We could spend all $3,750 a month!

Spend Tax-Free Income: https://www.amazon.com/Tax-FREE-Retirement-code-lifetime-income/dp/1475206976

Three principles of investing

Your car premium and credit score

Insurance industry has your data proving that if you have a bad credit score, you're more likely to slam on the brakes or step hard on the gas. The premium you are charged is determined by your demographics: less educated, unmarried, sell real estate. They released a white paper that it says validates auto insurance pricing decisions based on credit scores, marital status, education level and occupation. The research paper says telematics data collected from January 2017 to June 2019 shows that two behaviors that are known to correlate with increased claims cost — hard braking and hard accelerating — also correlate with insurers’ pricing practices. However, credit scores may penalize people for events they cannot control, such as loss of a job or a death in the family. The use of credit-based insurer scores is banned in California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan and Washington. Unless you live in these states, your option is to eliminate any negative and incorrect information at the credit bureaus. If that is not successful, you must shop a new insurance firm that many not use your negative score. A local insurance agent may help you find the right carrier for your needs.

https://www.amazon.com/Industry-Insiders-Guides-Buying-Insurance/dp/1466435712

Three principles of investing

One: no advisor, broker or Wall Street guru can predict the future of a security. Two: the more you pay for investing advice the less you get to keep. Your costs include fees, commissions, taxes, charges, and buying/selling at the wrong time. Three: over the long term, steady investing and re-investing provide the highest return. The Miracle of Compounding is the central factor in building wealth. Any person can achieve all three. John Bogle founder of Vanguard gave us easy low-cost index funds. Warren Buffett proved index funds beat managed funds. Senator William Roth gave us accumulation without taxation. Investing is easy but hard—hard to control our emotions.

https://www.amazon.com/Disruptors-Three-Innovators-increase-WEALTH/dp/1720857563

90% of wealth is controlled by 10% of the population

To prop up Wall Street wealth, the Federal Reserve, bought bond ETF mutual funds in 2020 and bailouts in 2008. That is, you and I as tax payers used our borrowed money to give money to companies so they would not go out of business and the wealthy lose money. When a government enters the private financial markets, this is a classic example of state socialism. “state ownership of the means of production, either as a temporary measure or as a characteristic of socialism in the transition from the capitalist to the socialist mode of production or communist society.” In a capitalist system, investors are rewarded if the business succeeds. If the business fails, the investors lose their money. In the American style of socialism, we taxpayers are forced to save the businesses that would have failed: “no-lose casino.” Our representatives write the laws (with lobbyists’ help) that allow this socialism to continue claiming that poor workers would suffer from lost jobs if government did not bail out failing businesses. Our representatives are elected using funds supplied by the businesses that receive the money. And why are we still giving subsides to Farm, Oil, Export businesses and our state/local money (gov subsidies) to big businesses like Royal Dutch, Intel, Alcoa, Boeing? Only socialist countries give tax money to private businesses and their wealthy owners/shareholders.

Socialism, American style: https://www.amazon.com/Americas-Socialism-Rich-little-people/dp/1535218584

How to eliminate your income tax

When you have securities in your Wall Street firm account, you don’t need to produce income the old fashioned way. Our tax system taxes “earned income” and capital “gains” when you recognize the gains from selling the asset. What if you don’t earn income or sell assets? What if you take a loan using your securities as collateral? A loan is not taxed so you don’t pay taxes on the money you have to spend. Many brokerage firms are willing to lend against up to 60% or 65% of a client's portfolio, depending on its level of risk. Morgan Stanley and Merrill are lending mostly to their proprietary clients. Anyone who wants to access low-interest cash without incurring capital gains and, more importantly, giving up the growth of the securities can do so. You can ‘borrowing on margin’ through your investment account or borrow against the cash value in your life insurance policy. If you never pay back the loan, your heirs can skip paying taxes too since the cost basis of the security or real estate will step up to the fair market value on the date of the owner’s death. This strategy is better than Trump’s trumped up real estate losses strategy since you don’t need to dabble in real estate or casinos to make it work. Avoid taxes even without borrowing from Wall Street.
