How much does it really cost to invest?

How much does it really cost to invest?
Warren Buffett suggests we invest in two low-cost funds at Vanguard for life. He thinks John Bogle, Vanguard founder, was right—low-cost investing beats Wall Street advisors over the long term. Trading securities does not pay unless you have insider information (which is illegal, except for Congress). Bogle calculated that, over our investing lifetime, that little 2% broker/advisor fee will erode 63 percent of what you would have had. As Bogle puts it, “the tyranny of compounding costs” is overwhelming. Do the facts back up these claims? Buffett bet $1 million on the Vanguard 500 Index and beat 5 hedge fund strategies from 2008-2017. DALBAR tracks investments over time. They found that a simple S&P 500 index fund earned 11% a year over time while the average equity investor using a manager earned just 3.79%. “Cost matters” as Bogle used to say.

Trump tax returns may not reveal his hidden tax avoidance schemes
Since the 70s, Trump has been paying accountants and lawyers to hide his income and net worth for tax and negotiating reasons. With over 500 subsidiaries and entities, his situation may be difficult to understand from tax returns. He has been involved with foreign entities and shady characters for many years. Trump uses the alternate American tax system—the one designed for the wealthy. Tricks and perhaps illegal financial practices have stumped his bankers and auditors. His specialty is real estate which is one of the best methods of avoiding income taxes. When you buy a building with a loan, you can deduct from rents all the expenses and maintenance and ‘depreciation’—the full cost the building can be used for years to provide tax-free cash. For instance, in 1995, Trump paid no tax on his income of $10,846,076 because he had ‘paper losses’ of $915,729,293. That $ BILLION ‘paper loss’ would enable him to avoid taxes for up to 18 years. Each entity can have ‘paper losses’ for years. Plus Trump wrote off his loans for his bankrupt casinos, resorts, and buildings. And Mr Christie, Gov of NJ, even cut his casino taxes from $30 million to $5 million. Even his profitable golf firm in Westchester worth $50 million on some of his statements pays taxes on only $1.4 million tax assessor’s value. Jared has his own little tax avoidance gig going on too. He’s in on Dad’s new tax scam.

Is it too late to file taxes?
Before spending $200-400 for a paid preparer, try filling in the screens using the IRS partners at irs.gov https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/. The instructions are easy to follow especially if you have last year’s return to compare what forms you need. I have found https://www.freetaxusa.com very easy to negotiate and respond to email questions. This one charges only $15 for your state return: Fed is free. It is still $15 when as complicated like mine. Basically, you must pay tax on all your taxable income—wages, pensions, etc. This year you have less to deduct because the standard deduction was doubled. Beware some software glitches. However, you lost the personal exemption of $4,050 for yourself, your spouse and each of your dependents. For each child under age 17 you receive $2,000. In high property tax states—NY, NJ, CA, CT, etc you will probably owe this year. The deduction cap is now $10,000 and the average homeowners in these states pay about $20,000 property tax. The law was written by a Rep from a Red state.

Use your tax refund to create a $1 million retirement fund
Michele had trouble saving. She seemed to always be waiting for her next paycheck. She never had enough to save for a rainy day like her Mom did. She used to make about $35,000 as a shop manager but with federal, social security, Medicare and state taxes, unemployment, disability, and health insurance, she was not able to put anything away for retirement. Years ago, her local tax preparer suggested she use her tax refund to create a retirement fund. Usually Michele would use her refund to pay bills or buy something special. The tax preparer said that if she agreed to start an IRA with $2,000 of her refund, she would be able to increase her refund--Uncle Sam would help her save. The amount she invested would reduce her income and make her refund larger. Each $2,000 would grow over time if she left it in stock mutual funds in her IRA account. Over time, it can grow large enough that she will have enough for retirement.

Are you driving the best car for under $30,000?
10 Most Comfortable Cars Under $30,000: Volkswagen Passat has one of the roomiest back seats in its class. Kia Optima added a suite of driver assists as standard equipment. Hyundai Sonata offers a wide range of models and powertrains to match your budget. Buick Regal Sportback has liftback body in addition to its upscale feel. Chevy Malibu has exterior style to go along with its comfortable interior. Subaru Legacy Outback offers the rugged good looks in a useful wagon body style and dependable all-wheel drive. Nissan has answered critics of bland styling with an all-new Altima. Toyota Camry’s great resale and dependability make this comfortable 4-door sedan a contender. Solid handling, low ownership costs and high resale value all add up to a winning formula in the Honda Accord. Chevy Impala has plenty of room front and rear and stellar infotainment. Save up to 40% on a 3-year old model: quality and VALUE.

Is Medicare for All right for you?
Medicare is not socialized medicine. Socialized medicine is where the government owns the hospitals, owns the labs, owns the MRI and CT machines, and all the doctors and support staff are on the government payroll. That’s not what Medicare is. In our current political fight, some GOP are using old fears of Russian-style ‘socialism’ to discredit the discussion of finding a more effective system of medical car and payment in America. Medicare pays for the high-cost end-of-life expenses and high-cost chronic conditions. Yet, users pay only $135.50 a month from their SS benefits. For-profit plans cost over $400 a month if you can find one in your state. Medicare is national: You pay $185 per year in 2019 for your Part B deductible. After your deductible is met, you typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for most doctor services. Some buy an Supplement for these. Your hospital coverage (Part A) is usually free. If you have not paid for Part A during your working life and you buy Part A, you'll pay up to $437 each month. Part C pays for drugs and costs vary depending on your needs. Congress could change the law and negotiate the costs for all of us so our costs are in line with all the other countries in the world. Some pay 50% less than we do for US drugs. The reason we do not have Medicare for All now is simply money. The clerk at my for-profit health insurer decides which procedures and care I receive. The company CEO makes more bonus if the clerk excludes some treatments and procedures. My doctor and I have little to say in it. Lobbyists get $160 Million to tell Congress: “NO MedicareForAll”

Did you know your mutual funds make money even when the fees are ZERO?
When you invest in a fund, the manager buys your share of the stocks in your fund. For the Vanguard 500 Index Warren Buffett recommends, it owns shares of the top 500 companies. Because most investors are earning 11% a year over time, the stocks in your fund are held a long time. Your fund then loans the stocks out to other institutions that need them temporarily for a rental fee. This fee is what allows most funds to charge 0.04% or less. If your fund has millions of shares, they can make a lot more than your fees. So fees are falling and some are charging ZERO. However, depending on your agreement, you may be giving up your information and perhaps good service. So you may find ‘free’ is not really true. Some firms could start charging you after they get your money. Some could start using your information or selling it to target you for sales of other expensive products. Best Robo-Advisor is low-cost and unbiased advisor.

Successful investing with just 3 funds

Vanguard’s biggest fans have made investing successful by using 3 funds
Since the chance of your advisor providing a successful strategy for over 20 years is almost ZERO, fans have put their long-term strategy in writing. You can ‘play’ the market with some money but the bulk of your retirement and legacy is more likely to succeed in low-cost broad market funds. No stock or sector lasts more than 10 years. Vanguard happens to know since they are the leading provider of ‘spend less; keep more.’ With this strategy, you own all the stocks and bonds you will ever need in your life—input and output. Actually the better strategy is to just buy the Target Date fund when you wish to retire. For instance, Target 2055 has produced 11% over the last 10 years. Most advisors fail that one. It has the bonus of rebalancing your portfolio as you get closer to output time. ‘Play money’ is fine but this strategy works best for your serious investments. You do NOTHING after you buy for 0.15%. Target Date funds are not perfect but they are as perfect as most investors can get to reaching their goal.

New ways the wealthy avoid taxes that we have to pay for them
This is actually an old strategy with an update: private placement life insurance. It allows policy holders to combine volitile investment products, like hedge funds or other alternatives, with the tax-free benefits of life insurance. Benefits are for high-income earners. They have tax-inefficient investments in a tax-efficient structure. They create a huge tax-FREE legacy without the cost of surrender charges. PPLI hides assets with large taxable returns. The wealthy can take out funds as needed as a refund or a loan—no income or capital gains taxes ever. Perfect for the person who has special assets but does not need the income now. We pay the taxes for their use of our courts, police, military, roads, airports, and other costs of the nation.

Is a robo-advisor right for you?
If you are beginning or near the end of investing, a robo might be best for you since they cost less and Buffett’s non-trading strategy for all investors seems to win over time. Unless you believe that your advisor can beat the averages over time against all odds, you are overpaying for advice. Study after study shows it is not possible, unless your advisor does not charge for the service or you have insider information. Perhaps you obtain advice for free from your company. Otherwise, think hard about Morningstar’s conclusion: “In every single time period and data point tested, low-cost funds beat high-cost funds.” Most analysts are rated by 1 year performance so you really have no idea what happens to your cash next year. Unless your person picked Google, Apple, Facebook, etc long ago and you bet the ranch on the stock, you are faced with throwing darts each year or paying more for less. The average equity investor earns just 3.79% over time vs the 500 Index at 11%. Humans don’t touch your money. Act dead.

Which car dealer fees are legit: buying a car for less
Why do you need dealer prep? Washing your car should not cost $229. Delivery should be the dealer cost, not yours. Over $700 for his guy to drive from his bulk lot to you is crazy? No. Doc fees are BS—I don’t charge for paperwork in my business—why should they? Negotiation is a matter of having the facts. Most fees are pure profit since people like you are not going to pay them and yet the dealer stays in business. If the seller does not negotiate, walk away. There are other dealers and cars. In fact, most Working Millionaires don’t buy new—they see the price drop 40% when they wait. They have purchased from the dealer before and they each know a bargain works both ways. The dealer avoids selling them a lemon and millionaires are business people too.

Amazon hits new heights
AMZN stock costs $1822 up from $11 in 2001. Did your broker get you in to this 25,000% increase? How about the 39,800% increase in Patrick furniture or 17,500% increase in MGP distiller or 14,800% increase in Sleep Number beds? Don’t feel bad, very few outside the companies guessed right on these at the beginning of the climb. That is the problem with picking a stock to bet the ranch—even one horse—on. No one can foresee the winners in a bull market. And yet investors continue to pay 1-3% of their nest egg each year in hopes of finding the ‘needle in the haystack.’ What can investors who are not company insiders do? Play the averages—bet on par—think about the winners as a group. If the top stocks earn 11% a year on average and you pay 2% to the house, you get 9%. Over time we give away 63% of our possible total by NOT using The Disruptors.

We pay about 33% total taxes; wealthy pay less than 17%

New ways the wealthy avoid taxes that we have to pay for
Trump’s new tax limits the amount that property owners in high property tax states can deduct. The limit on SALT (state and local taxes) is $10,000. Trump allowed this because all his properties are owned by his companies which are not limited in right offs. Average homeowners in NJ for instance pay about $18,000 in property and 9% income tax or about $8,000. NJ Gov Christie ordered all counties to accept prepaid taxes last year so at least the first year tax was deductible. Wealth people’s lawyers are looking for permanent relief from this limit. One is to put residences into a limited liability company. Then they transfer interests in the LLC to five to ten separate trusts set up in Alaska, with each taking the maximum $10,000 deduction. They can then preserve the write-off for $50,000-$100,000 in property taxes they pay each year on all their homes. It costs a few dollars to maintain this legal loophole but it’s worth it. NJ govt is testing the use of county non-profit charities to receive the property taxes of its homeowners.

SCAMS: Beware illegal trading in elderly or estate accounts
Ami Forte, formerly Morgan Stanley, Tampa and her manager Terry McCoy were involved in an award for $34 million to the estate of the founder of the Home Shopping Network. They were liable for unauthorized trading, breach of fiduciary duty/constructive fraud, negligence, negligent supervision and unjust enrichment. Even if the estates or senior’s accounts in your family are not huge, make sure you confirm what the advisor is doing. Just because this brokerage is famous does not necessary mean everyone there is giving your relative the best deal for your family. Meeting with the local manager and obtaining trading justifications in writing are going to make the firm think twice about ‘churning’ the account. The only reason to trade in this type of account is to produce income for the advisor and firm. High broker production is the way to become a wealthy and famous advisor so that more wealthy people will hire them. As with so many brokers caught violating the rules, Forte has moved on to the Pinnacle, a new firm so she can do it again. Perhaps your family account would be better off at a firm with brokers on salary, like Vanguard or TIAA or with a fee-only planner https://www.napfa.org/

Do you have a dispute with your broker?
You signed an account form that requires you to use arbitration not law suit if you want your money back for a bad act. You must file at FINRA, the self-regulating brokers’ organization. http://www.finra.org/investors/dispute-resolution Market volatility has increased the number of filings by 47%. Cases related to Puerto Rico bond fraud and requests by brokers to have their Finra records expunged may also be contributing to the increase, according to FINRA. Attorney Adam Gana, who defends investors in Finra proceedings, said he's seeing this trend in his practice, where there has been an uptick in cases involving theft and "selling away"—instances where brokers sell products not approved by their firms that turn out to be part of a fraud or Ponzi scheme.

Are you getting all your Medicare benefits?
53% of older adults don’t know that Medicare Part B “doctor visits, etc costs $134 a month, according to a survey of adults over age 50. Social Security deducts this amount as well as Part D drugs if chosen. Many adults believe that it covers long-term care. Medicare covers nursing home care only for rehabilitation and other limited circumstances. Medicaid covers LTC for those with few financial resources. We can’t qualify by giving away assets within 5 years of our need for LTC. Learn more about Medicare in the government’s official handbook. The Medicare office is also on YouTube. With the GOP gunning for cuts in the benefits we have paid for all our lives, it is smart to learn and plan ahead. Trump tax cuts will be paid for by us not wealthy.

GOP religionists reversing America’s tolerance for personal choice
Scalia stand-in Gorsuch has begun to move America back to the 50s when protestant white men decided everyone else’s choices. Trump party Supremes kill CA law requiring communication: Notices of CA women’s options removed from clinic was deemed violation of free speech rights of pro-lifers. In fact, women are lied to in these religionist’s clinics: ‘abortion leads to breast cancer.’ Trump’s Supremes have a religious bias. They said a baker who is selling cakes in the open market can discriminate against people he does not like. Using religion and one group’s 1st amendment rights can justify discrimination of anyone. GOP engineered Gorsuch into a Supreme seat by denying Obama’s candidate a hearing. The Trump party has filled the lower courts with those who wish to exclude people by skin color or religion or wealth. As ‘The Leader’ has stated, the Trump party only wants people from Norway. Now the Trump party has their wish: their Supremes ban people from poor Muslim countries. They did not ban Muslims from the country that carried out the 9/11 Saudi bin Laden attack. ‘The Leader’ does not want ‘due process’—a hallmark of America. He wanted to keep the children of asylum seekers in cages until their hearings. He feels he is above the law himself and his edicts should be the law. The Path to Dictatorship is repeated.

Are you using the most powerful force in your investing strategy?
Warren Buffett says ‘compounding’ over time is the real creator of wealth. Not many investment gurus agree because they only make money by doing the opposite: trading. But no guru has matched Buffett’s 19% gain per year for 50 years. Invest $3,000 a year—$250 a month—and over time it grows like this: $55,000 in 10 years; $218,000 in 20 years; $707,000 in 30 years; 1,111,000 in 34 years; $2.2 million in 40 years. You paid about $100,000 for your $1 million and $120,000 for your $2.2 million. You have time.

Annuity sellers given green light to steer us to high-cost products
State insurance regulators just voted down a ban on sales contests and travel awards for agents. Now they can push the high-cost products that earn them a trip to Bahamas or Fiji. Sales contests can create aggressive sales tactics that don’t advance a consumer-centered best interest standard. The NAIC group also failed to pass a cost-benefit disclosure for customers. This means we will not be able compare these complex products with other offers. We will have to pay an unbiased law specialist to do the cost-benefit analysis for us. Annuities are contracts that contain complicated clauses that limit our gains and protect the insurance firms. They are designed so the insurer always makes a profit no matter what the market and interest rates do. Unless interest rates are high or the market is going up steadily, an annuity has costs that exceed the benefits for customers. The regulators rely on the insurers for income so they agreed to insurers wishes. Beware strong sales tactics—promised guarantees and benefits need checking.
