Three principles of investing

Your car premium and credit score

Insurance industry has your data proving that if you have a bad credit score, you're more likely to slam on the brakes or step hard on the gas. The premium you are charged is determined by your demographics: less educated, unmarried, sell real estate. They released a white paper that it says validates auto insurance pricing decisions based on credit scores, marital status, education level and occupation. The research paper says telematics data collected from January 2017 to June 2019 shows that two behaviors that are known to correlate with increased claims cost — hard braking and hard accelerating — also correlate with insurers’ pricing practices. However, credit scores may penalize people for events they cannot control, such as loss of a job or a death in the family. The use of credit-based insurer scores is banned in California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan and Washington. Unless you live in these states, your option is to eliminate any negative and incorrect information at the credit bureaus. If that is not successful, you must shop a new insurance firm that many not use your negative score. A local insurance agent may help you find the right carrier for your needs.

Three principles of investing

One: no advisor, broker or Wall Street guru can predict the future of a security. Two: the more you pay for investing advice the less you get to keep. Your costs include fees, commissions, taxes, charges, and buying/selling at the wrong time. Three: over the long term, steady investing and re-investing provide the highest return. The Miracle of Compounding is the central factor in building wealth. Any person can achieve all three. John Bogle founder of Vanguard gave us easy low-cost index funds. Warren Buffett proved index funds beat managed funds. Senator William Roth gave us accumulation without taxation. Investing is easy but hard—hard to control our emotions.

90% of wealth is controlled by 10% of the population

To prop up Wall Street wealth, the Federal Reserve, bought bond ETF mutual funds in 2020 and bailouts in 2008. That is, you and I as tax payers used our borrowed money to give money to companies so they would not go out of business and the wealthy lose money. When a government enters the private financial markets, this is a classic example of state socialism. “state ownership of the means of production, either as a temporary measure or as a characteristic of socialism in the transition from the capitalist to the socialist mode of production or communist society.” In a capitalist system, investors are rewarded if the business succeeds. If the business fails, the investors lose their money. In the American style of socialism, we taxpayers are forced to save the businesses that would have failed: “no-lose casino.” Our representatives write the laws (with lobbyists’ help) that allow this socialism to continue claiming that poor workers would suffer from lost jobs if government did not bail out failing businesses. Our representatives are elected using funds supplied by the businesses that receive the money. And why are we still giving subsides to Farm, Oil, Export businesses and our state/local money (gov subsidies) to big businesses like Royal Dutch, Intel, Alcoa, Boeing? Only socialist countries give tax money to private businesses and their wealthy owners/shareholders.

How to eliminate your income tax

When you have securities in your Wall Street firm account, you don’t need to produce income the old fashioned way. Our tax system taxes “earned income” and capital “gains” when you recognize the gains from selling the asset. What if you don’t earn income or sell assets? What if you take a loan using your securities as collateral? A loan is not taxed so you don’t pay taxes on the money you have to spend. Many brokerage firms are willing to lend against up to 60% or 65% of a client's portfolio, depending on its level of risk. Morgan Stanley and Merrill are lending mostly to their proprietary clients. Anyone who wants to access low-interest cash without incurring capital gains and, more importantly, giving up the growth of the securities can do so. You can ‘borrowing on margin’ through your investment account or borrow against the cash value in your life insurance policy. If you never pay back the loan, your heirs can skip paying taxes too since the cost basis of the security or real estate will step up to the fair market value on the date of the owner’s death. This strategy is better than Trump’s trumped up real estate losses strategy since you don’t need to dabble in real estate or casinos to make it work. Avoid taxes even without borrowing from Wall Street.

Why starting investing early earns 10 times contributions

Why starting investing early earns 10 times contributions
$250 a month, $3,000 a year, gives you $995,000 in 33 years, IF you invest in a low-cost stock index fund in your 401k or Tax-FREE account. $3,000 for 33 years is $99,000. If you keep adding your stock dividends automatically and don’t stop compounding in the same fund, even when it goes down on paper, you end up with about $1,000,000. You don’t do anything else with your money. If you start late, add more each month. This investment strategy is recommended by Warren Buffett, one of the greatest unbiased non-commission advisors in history. You don’t manage it or let anyone else touch it. They will take your earnings and you are left with 3.79% not 11%. A fee and commissions can take up to 63% of your accumulation over time. You alone earn about 11% over time—not every year. Some years you earn 30% and some you lose 30%. However if you invest like Buffett—no selling or trading—you average 11%. This is not a buy and sell, ‘sector rotation’, or ‘buy on dips’ strategy. It is the “snoring” strategy. Let compounding work.

Tax return due July 15: Extension automatic with form
If you could not meet with your preparer and can’t complete the online tax return using one of the FREE software programs, you can obtain an extension to October 15 just by filing a form with an estimate of what you owe. IRS wants the money—the return can wait—since they have 3 years to find any errors. Fill and print and pay form:  https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4868.pdf
If you cannot pay now, sign a payment plan so you pay over time. Since millions are out of work, this is expected to be big solution. It is unclear what your interest rate will be.

401k company match suspended?
If you are one of 12 million workers who have had your future retirement fund reduced because your firm has cut their 401k company match, you can still reach your goal. Your tax-advantaged plan must be modified, at least temporarily. If your current income allows it, you can continue to grow your retirement fund by starting a tax-deductible or tax-FREE IRA account. With a regular IRA, you do not pay income tax on your contributions now. With a Roth IRA, you pay income tax at today’s lower rates so you receive tax-FREE income in retirement. Most advisors think tax rates will be higher in the future so you will be able to pay less tax on your IRA distributions. Depending on how much your Roth IRA fund grows, you may be able to reduce your taxable income significantly so that your Social Security benefits are less or not taxable also.

Deducting your work-at-home expenses is difficult
Trump eliminated the deduction for unreimbursed business expenses and home office in 2017. The previous tax law allowed the federal write-offs for unreimbursed business expenses and home offices, along with most other miscellaneous itemized deductions. So if you had to upgrade your laptops, ergonomic chairs and high-speed internet, you might want to check with your employer. The federal tax code lets employers reimburse employees for costs that are reasonable and necessary for them to do their jobs amid a disaster, and the Internal Revenue Service has said the pandemic qualifies. Self-employed folks take these and other expenses as a reduction in revenue before income is taxed. That is how our President gets to boast that he pays NO income taxes.

America has officially become a socialist country: socialism for the rich
In March 2020, our Federal Reserve, the US central bank which creates money gave its Power of Attorney to mutual fund firm Black Rock to buy stocks and bonds with our money. Like Russia, our government will now own businesses that may fail. It has already purchased the debt of US companies in trouble or on the verge of failure. This makes it likely that business people will have no reason to act prudently with their (our) business assets and senior staff salaries. Like the investment banks in 2007-8, they know that they are “too big to fail.” They know that we taxpayers will keep them afloat even if they are not good business or money managers. This has happened recently when the Fed started buying bondsdebt of certain companies that had made poor decisions. I know, most taxpayers still think America is a capitalist country. We were founded on the idea that if a business failed, it would NOT be kept afloat by the government—the investors who own the company would lose their money, not us. Now the GOP-backed Trump regime is doing just what Putin does—using the people’s money to help out businesses owned by Putin and friends. If the stocks and bonds owned by the Fed fall in value or are worthless in the future, we taxpayers will still have to pay the interest on the money borrowed to buy them. The Fed is America’s investment bank account.

Pay less; keep more--faster way to wealth

Buy only what you need; become financially ‘comfortable’ faster
$1,100,000. This is the amount of money most of us say it takes to be "financially comfortable," according to a recent survey. However, only a few of us ever get there. Why? The main reason most of us are not 'comfortable' is that we don't plan to have a million dollars ... ever. Most of us settle for a 'fantasy' $ million—playing the lottery every week. A $1 million is not hard to reach with a plan and TIME.
Now we can create wealth for our family— $1,100,000 and more—by using new wealth-building tools from industry DISRUPTORS. We don't need expensive brokers, advisors or agents to buy the essentials of an efficient financial plan. We don't need a lot of money to start building wealth. All we need is TIME and a plan. Pay less; keep more.

Other ways the wealthy avoid paying their fair share of taxes
The tax code was written by lawyers and accountants for lawyers and accountants, NOT for us. Here are some of the ways WE do not get to hide our income and assets from taxation. Preferred stock and trusts can create dynasties and avoid current and estate taxes. The Caymans are home to more tax shelters than people. You can’t eat stock options but you can hold them without taxes. Are your assets owned by a company that only exists on paper to avoid taxes? Do you live on money borrowed against your assets? Are your living expenses deductible by your own branded corporation so you pay less tax? What about private placement life insurance to hold hedge funds and avoid taxes. Or set up a non-profit ‘religious’ organization and fly in your own private jet?

Is a lottery win right for you?
Yes many dream but few are chosen. Most of our bets go to the government but are not tax-deductible. How about this: Mr Post won $15 million in PA. But he would be $500,000 in debt within just three months of his 1988 win, in part because he bought a twin-engine airplane (though he had no pilot’s license). OK, so we all think we would never do anything so stupid. We are not average, we thought. Ms Adams won the lottery TWICE for over $4 mil. She lost most in casinos and her kin hated her. Now she works 2 jobs making ends meet. Mr Whittacker won $170 million in 2002. He gave a lot away but lost his wife to divorce and his granddaughter to mysterious circumstances. He drank and ended up with 400 legal problems. The list goes on. Becoming wealthy slowly over time allows you to plan and use money wisely. Instead of buying lottery tickets or casino chips each month, put your money in the investment Warren Buffett recommends.

What to do with your RMD: How much will you spend?
Your RMD or required minimum distribution is the amount the IRS calculates for income tax purposes from your retirement accounts annually after your turn age 70½. You may want to invest part of it for the future or cut the amount in your IRA that you will pay tax on in coming years or contribute to legitimate charities. I help you answer these questions now: Will you have enough? How will you invest? How much will you spend? Explore 17 alternative uses of your RMD. Create tax-FREE income from your IRA while reducing future RMD. Take advantage of the miracle of compounding: $100,000 may become $500,000 in 15 years. Create an investment plan for 30+ retirement years. Self-insure and self-fund all your financial needs. Social Security to cut benefits in 2034 so you may need more income later. You have time to do something about the future.

SCAMS: Beware the ‘pump and dump’ scheme
Customers of Greg Bercowy, St. Petersburg, FL were victims of his story of a tiny mineral exploration firm in NV. Greg bought millions of shares of Aureus with money taken from a relative. This sent the shares soaring in 1 month and induced others to buy while Greg sold. He pumped the price up by fast buying and selling and left others with stock worth much less than they paid. The SEC fined Greg $1/2 million. The pump and dump scheme formed the central theme of two popular movies, "Boiler Room" and "The Wolf of Wall Street," both of which featured a warehouse full of telemarketing stockbrokers pitching penny stocks. In each case, the brokerage firm was a market maker and held a large volume of stock in companies with highly questionable prospects. Brokers earned large bonuses when the firm would sell the worthless stock after its investors poured money into it.

How much are you losing by NOT following Buffett’s advice?
Warren Buffett bet a million dollars that a low-cost index fund would outperform a collection of hedge funds over the course of 10 years. This week he won that bet and gave $2.2 million to his charity called Girls Inc. Over the course of the bet the S&P 500 index fund returned 7.1% compounded annually, significantly more than the average of 2.2% for the experts. Buffett has advocated putting the bulk of our investments in a low-cost index (he said Vanguard’s 500 index). For those who follow his advice, this bet confirmed his statement that “a very low-cost index is going to beat a majority of the amateur-managed money or professionally-managed money.” Why don’t more smart people follow this advice? He thinks it is because they think they are smarter than everyone else. Instead, low-cost beats high-cost every time studies show.

How much is $250 a month worth after 30 years?
One of the reasons people don’t save is that the quick results are not impressive. I look at my balance after 2-3 years and I don’t feel rich. My account looks pathetic--$9,272. My investment account looks better but … $10,923 is just underwhelming. But Fidelity looked at its retirement accounts where the owner died or the owner forgot they had an account. Those accounts were the most successful. Buffett says the same: he does better when he is ‘snoring’ than when active. After 30 years, my $2,000 a year invested at work—different 401ks is worth $606,882. Stock index funds grow at very different rates—+38% and -37%. They average over time between 10-12%. The financial industry average was 3.79% for advisor-managed accounts for 30 years. If I had used a broker I might have just $112,000. Buffett bet $1 million that a simple stock index could beat the best of Wall Street gurus. He was correct: 7% beats 2% during this 10 year period. So what is $250 a month worth after 30 years? No one knows—between $570,000 and $880,000—but if the earnings from my money has to pay 1-3% for a fortune teller, I will gladly follow Buffett’s FREE advice to buy 2 Vanguard’s funds.
