You don’t need a financial industry sales person

Easy tax filling

Online IRS approved software is easy as answering questions. I have been using the Free-File vendors for years at https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free. I have used TaxAct, FreeTaxUSA, and 1040NOW.NET. I pay a small fee to have the same return filled in my state of New Jersey. I avoid all the commercial sites that say they are ‘free’ since they usually charge for some special form needed each year. In fact, one of the commercial sites, Turbo, has been notified by the FCC to stop claiming their service is ‘free.’ The benefit for using sites like FreeTaxUSA is that next year they have kept your name and address data so you don’t have to reenter your bank, broker, employer, etc data. This data will prompt you to find info that you may have not received or have forgotten to obtain. Some reviewers claim these sites are not comprehensive but I have found FreeTaxUSA to provide all the forms and calculations for our return of about 46 forms/pages. Plus we get our refunds by direct deposit in about 3 weeks. Check for your refund: https://www.irs.gov/refunds. Due Monday April 18.

Will crypto assets support your retirement?

Many working people expect to receive huge gains from this new investment type, despite knowing very little about it according to a new survey. Responders were asked: ‘Where do you expect the greatest return on your investments over the next 10 years?’ Unfortunately 30% think crypto will provide the biggest investment returns. Stocks are second with about 20%, mutual funds 11%, real estate and NFTs show single digits. Younger people expect to retire earlier than older people as expected. Unfortunately, crypto is the newest ‘get rich quick’ scheme in the press and the top scam mechanism. Since schools do not teach young people how to invest for retirement, it is up to their parents with limited financial literacy to teach them. Most don’t know about the tax-FREE account available to everyone.

Do you use the power of compounding?

Most high schools don’t teach the most important aspect of managing your money. Most average middle-class parents don’t know how wealth is made. Sure they have heard that some people become wealthy by creating a new biz like Google or winning the lottery or inheriting their family legacy. But most young people don’t know how to use the miracle of compounding which Warren Buffett credits for making him wealthy. If your math teacher mentioned it at all, they probably used the illustration of how a savings account grows: a deposit of $1,000 grows to $1,010.05 in a year. Not exciting enough to remember by the time you start earning real money. If schools were allowed to teach compounding with examples from the real world, everyone would show this financial miracle at work. Thus a teacher would show the actual results of real returns documented by DALBAR, the unbiased tracking firm. For the long-term investor, the SAFEST investment is a low-cost stock market mutual fund compounding at the rate of 11%. An honest math teacher would then show a chart like the one of real accumulations over time in this book. The teacher could build a real table showing $250 invested monthly for 35 years with a total accumulation of $1.2 million:

Not all wealthy hedge funds do well

Things have gone from bad to worse at Tiger Global Management’s flagship hedge fund. The hedge fund tumbled more than 13% in March, according to a person familiar with the matter, capping three straight losing months and a tough 2021. The decline was 7% last year, its first annual drop since 2016. Hedge fund managers produced aggregate performance of 10.3% in the year ended Dec. 31, down from 11.8% the previous year, returns of the HFRI Fund Weighted Composite index showed. Compared to a simple low-cost stock index fund return of 28.83% in 2021, 18.38% in 2020 and 31.74% in 2019, hedge funds have suffered from their high fees and costs. Instead of trying to pick securities and leverage returns, many wealthy folks would have been better off leaving their money in a stock index fund like the Vanguard 500. As a group, hedge funds have a net outflow because high costs must still be paid to managers. Tax-FREE account approved by the IRS is a better deal than a wager on a hedge fund manager.

Why are we paying a higher tax rate than the wealthy?

Bloomberg earned over $2 billion but paid only 4.1% in taxes. Ultra wealthy high-income Americans are not only privileged—they beat the system and pay less tax than we do. For them it is a game: not paying taxes. “That makes me smart” one confessed during the presidential debates. Jeff and Elon paid nothing recently helping to pump up the national debt—our children’s debt. Most corporations pay nothing. The middle-class pays more than most wealthy people according to Warren Buffett. We pay total taxes of 32.9%. They pay under 20%. The American system is withering away.

You don’t need a financial industry sales person

I have been in the industry since 1987 and I came to the conclusion that most middle-income families can’t afford to lose up to 63% of their hard-earned savings/investing to the financial industry. From the inside, I saw that most financial clients are wasting their money on the tricks and hype presented by most sales folks. After obtaining all of the licenses from the industry, I can tell you that you don’t need to pay for the biased self-serving advice from the industry. The best and most useful information is available FREE—books and internet provide exactly what you need to be a successful investor and financial services consumer. First, no advisor knows what will happen with a security or the market next. Second, we know the probabilities of investment success by security type. Stocks and low-cost stock mutual funds provide 11% return over time—more than 10 year periods. Third, fast trading hot stocks finish last. Monthly dollar cost averaging provides the best method of investing. Fourth, buy all financial services from direct sellers not salespeople. Get three estimates of costs before you buy anything. Costs matter: https://www.amazon.com/Keep-Simple-Essential-Financial-Life/dp/1492258849

Have you taught your child how to make tax-FREE money?

Make sure you teach your kids how to create wealth the easy way. My parents were not investors. At my first job, I had no clue which investment option to use for my 401k contribution and company match. The HR person told me to put it into the 'safe' stable value fund. That was the worst choice at my age I learned later when I got my securities licenses. If I had followed their advice I would have ended up with $150,000 instead of a Wealth Reserve of $877,233 about 33 years later. I have used this 'Wealth Reserve' as I call it to have funds to buy low-cost insurance, to buy two homes and 5 cars with higher down payments or cash, and now to receive $2,500 a month in retirement supplement. Now your child can build an account that provides tax-FREE retirement income too.

Teach you kids to triple their assets

 Make the new year better

New year fresh start for your kids/grandkids

Make sure you teach your kids how to create wealth the easy way. My parents were not investors. At my first job, I had no clue which investment option to use for my 401k contribution and company match. The HR person told me to put it into the 'safe' stable value fund. That was the worst choice at my age I learned later when I got my securities licenses. If I had followed their advice I would have ended up with $150,000 instead of a Wealth Reserve of $877,233 about 33 years later. We have used this 'Wealth Reserve' as I call it to have funds to use low-cost high-deductible insurance, to buy two homes and 5 cars with higher down payments or cash, and now to receive $2,500 a monthly in a retirement supplement. Your kids use the Buffett investment strategy for any amateur. Buffett recently proved his method, though simple, beat the strategies of the best hedge funds. Start with only $1,000.

Start in 30 minutes: https://www.amazon.com/Give-your-child-leg-manage/dp/1096505355

Why our readers use low-cost efficient Vanguard funds

World's greatest investor's retirement advice: Retirement income for life from 2 Vanguard funds. Avoid “high-fee managers” Warren Buffett's personal will provides for his family by directing that his cash assets be invested in just two Vanguard funds: One will provide cash for the coming year and the other will provide a sound future. The best way to protect your family's future is to be invested in the stock market, Pure and simple. When you have stock assets, your money compounds at higher rates when your account fees are 0.01-0.05%, not the retail rates of 1.5-3%. You don't have to settle for retail products that are structured to provide your financial sales firm with higher revenues. The average investor earns just 3.79%, not the 10-12% market rates. Why automatic investing is so successful

If your investment plan is NOT on automatic, you may be missing the second best strategy. After the miracle of compounding, investing every month—buying more when prices are low and less when higher—usually beats market timing. Think of it: you don’t need to decide when or how much to invest. There is no rush to buy on the dip or guess when your stocks/funds are at their peak gains. You don’t have to fret that you may have missed the 10 best days of the stock market rise each year. Proof: Fidelity analyzed the most successful retirement accounts of all its clients. The most successful accounts were those that were NOT changed—no selling. The accounts that were forgotten or client died gained the most over time. Investing benefits from the miracle of compounding—dividends/interest reinvested—when there is no market-timing buy/sell trading. Auto-invest strategy takes our emotions out of the process. We don’t miss the best 10 days of gains since they are NOT predictable. We don’t sell at the wrong time.

Is Bitcoin right for you?

If you own BTC you have had a wild ride this year. If you don’t you probably earned 27% in the real market. If you own BTC you know this is a speculative play and if you cashed out at $50,000 before it fell to $31,000, you are probably happy. If not you are sad. There are many professionals that feel this game is worse than the Ponzi scheme of Madoff. Why? Because there is nothing real here. And you can’t use it to buy anything except in El Salvador and Tesla auto. And many accounts have been hacked. You may be able to make money with your account but it is hard to guard the value. It may drop a lot on one day but you never know how much you will have from one day to the next. Yes, there are folks who have won the lottery in Bits but not everyone wins in Ponzi schemes. One unit is $50K or more so you can’t create a 401k this way. The tax situation is fluid too. The IRS has not figured out how to regulate this phantom yet.

Why Mad Money Cramer recommends index funds

AARP interview: “If you’re going to buy a company’s stock, you have to know what they do. You have to know who their clients are. You have to know how they do when the economy’s doing well and when the economy’s doing badly. You have to read articles about the company. You have to read the [transcripts of] conference calls [in which companies discuss their financial results]. If you don’t have any time, you just own an index fund; you own good with the bad. It’s perfectly good for an individual to own an index fund. People are unwilling to do the work. I have friends who tell me, “These stocks seem OK, and so I’m just going to buy them.” And I’m, like, “No, please don’t do that. Please don’t do that.” The 500 Index fund only has the top grossing firms. They would not be in the 500 fund if they were ‘bad,’ as Cramer said. Over time, the average advisor account earned just 6.2% vs 500 index 10.7%. Picking a successful individual stock is a lot harder than Cramer implies. Every analyst picks bad stocks, even Cramer. Warren Buffett’s unbiased advice: buy an S&P 500 index fund.

Take their advice: https://www.amazon.com/Warren-Buffett-Your-Investment-Advisor/dp/1518690963

Wealth building hype can mislead you

Most articles you read about investing are written by journalists, not actual investors or folks who work in the financial field. Building wealth takes time, patience and commitment—all of which don’t sell books, magazines or TV shows. One article says you can start with $1 using an app. No. A low-cost investment account requires $1,000 to start. And $250 a month for about 30 years will create a nest egg of $700,000. It also promises that a “quality financial advisor could turn $500,000 into $3.4 million in 25 years.” No. The average advisor account earned just 6.2% vs 500 index 10.7%. A prominent financial analyst calculated that the average advisor fees will rob you of up to 63% of what you could have had using a low-cost stock market index. Pay more; earn less. The article promises to cut your car insurance by $700 if you use the author’s sponsor. No. All financial firms promise huge savings using one very unusual example. You may save by shopping 3 different carriers every 2 years but you will need to change your deductibles, drop coverages and benefits you don’t need. You may save $700 over 10 years or more. The article promotes a home warranty so you “don’t have to worry about fixing your home” heaters/appliances. No. These contracts don’t cover everything that goes wrong and cost more over time than you could accumulate in an account. The article also claims you can make “some money” watching videos and taking surveys online. No. Your payment for a survey is no more than $10. Use the time to learn how to build wealth from those who have actually done it like Warren Buffett and John Bogle.

Their strategies actually work: https://www.amazon.com/Buffett-Bogle-Holy-Bible-Investment/dp/1523693045

Easy way to save for the future

Easy way to save for the future—use the money you save by buying direct: auto, home, life, other insurance and expensive 401k and mutual funds. Create a Wealth Reserve: use savings on financials you already own. The financial industry has changed so you can buy with discounts or at Costco-type outlets. Example: MetLife charged $983 for the same $300,000 30-year term policy as SBLI provided for $384. Their financial strength ratings are A+ and their underwriting requirements are the same. The difference, $599, over 30 years is $17,970. If invested, this difference can add $175,000 to YOUR Wealth Reserve when you need it. The SHOCKER: the median net worth of a 33-year-old is just $8,525 including home and car! Buy value not price: benefits are the same.

What will you do with your 401k or 403b account?
Retiring or changing jobs, you must decide what to do with your money. BEWARE: Insurance agent advising 401k rollover is illegal: Check the insurer’s fees! Unless your old employer has low fees and a large selection of funds, you should transfer your money to a rollover IRA at no cost. Federal workers will soon have new options that allow their money to stay. Two questions to answer before you decide what to do. Large mutual fund firms like Schwab or Vanguard usually offer more choices and lower fees inside an IRA rollover account than leaving your money with your old employer. A stock/bond balanced fund costs 0.5% at Schwab and 0.07% at Vanguard. Both offer low-cost IRA accounts. Vanguard’s fees are low because the funds are run at cost—there are no commissions or owners to pay. Fees over your lifetime can take up to 63% of your potential nest egg. Based on the timeline for this money—stocks for 30 years out or balanced for retirement now—your first step is to call your new IRA custodian. Let them do the paperwork and initiate the direct transfer so you pay no tax. Tell your old 401k administrator you don’t want taxes taken out. When your money gets to its new home, confirm the move amount and type. If you change jobs again, you have a place to put it and you don’t need a broker to move it.

Are ‘Alternative’ investments right for you?
‘Alts’ are all the rage in the brokerage community. The argument goes like this: “multi-million dollar accounts have alternative investments and so should you.” Alts are private equity, real assets, derivatives, and hedge funds. Short answer: they are not worth the cost. If you had a few $ millions you would not be able to buy the same deals as the institutions that use alts. You are not an institution, so your goals can be met with less expensive vehicles. Higher costs, greater dependency on management’s crystal ball, less transparency, low tax efficiency, and limited or no access to the funds, all make alternatives unattractive. Alts are supposed to rise when your other assets fall. In recent history this has not been the record.

Is your advisor just plugging in the numbers?
85% of all advisors us ‘model’ portfolios. You thought the $ thousands you pay every year—eventually costing up to 63% of your total possible accumulation—was buying ‘Wall Street professional money management.’ No. This study says your advisor does not have time to plan each client’s future. They want scalability—more money for them not for you. Just as in Mrs Blanding’s dream house, you think you are getting the “color of butter ‘yellow’,” the painter buys the standard ‘yellow.’ The painter knows you will never know the color difference. Since you are NOT getting top-notch professional management why not pay less and earn more. We are talking real money: $3,000 a year invested in a low-cost market index for 30 years = $700,000; in an advisor-managed account = $167,000. Forget the myth of ‘professional management.’ Earn more.

Need a graduation gift?
The greatest gift you can give is financial knowledge. No matter how much your young graduate makes, it is up to YOU to show them the Buffett investment strategy. Make sure they can make and manage money. At my first job, I had no clue which investment to use for my 401k contributions and company match. The HR person told me to put it into the 'safe' stable value fund. That was the worst choice at my age I learned later when I got my securities’ licenses. If I had followed their advice I would have ended up with about $150,000 instead of a Wealth Reserve of $877,233 about 33 years later.

How did you find your car insurance?
Surveys usually look at all the factors but best is really determined by claims handling. You don’t want aggravation after the accident. Since price does not always show value, you need to keep both of these factors in mind. US News looked at over 2,000 claims. They rated satisfaction with the ease of filing a claim, customer service, claim status communication, claim resolution, overall value they feel their insurance company gives, if they’d recommend the company, and if they planned to renew their policy. Prices in 50 states, driver miles, violations, age and sex and type of car were considered. USAA is only for military had best rating. Travelers and State Farm were next. Geico had lower rates in most states. American Family car insurance was the lowest-ranked company on their list. Liberty Mutual did not provide rates. There are so many factors in your quote that this list is only useful as a start. Agents don’t always offer discounts. You must ask.

What regulators have done to us with their new rule?
SEC has put lipstick on a pig. The industry gets fat as they kiss us with sweetened lip service. GOP propaganda wins out over real significant change: Regulation is called ‘Best Interest.’ It claims to improve individual investor protections but look for the teeth! Since it does not actually define ‘best interest’ of the client, it lets salespeople drive through loopholes. Our ‘best’ interest is defined by the sellers, thus: “It doesn’t actually require brokers to act in clients’ best interests.” Most clients yawn at a broker’s ‘disclosures’: pages of legal boilerplate meant to keep clients out of court. The GOP had to kill the Fiduciary Rule in 2018 since it required sellers to ‘prove’ our interests were put above that of the sellers. The model: Certified Financial Planners have professional credentials to uphold. It took 6 years for the govt to incorporate all the concerns of consumers into the standards brokers/advisors/agents had to follow. We were losing $17 billion a year because we never got the ‘best’—only 2nd best: sellers still sold high-cost or inappropriate products. It was like our doctor giving us the new expensive drug when the generic did the job. Doctors received cash and meals and trips to push expensive versions. The same happens in financial products. Annuity sale scams were the focus of the Fiduciary Rule. Sellers have always received incentives for giving 2nd best the happy talk. The industry lobbyists got the Fiduciary Rule canceled in 6 months. Buyer beware!
