Investors have made
the right decisions about their asset mix again despite the barrage of
commentators, polls, brokers, advisors and press opinions. The classic
investment portfolio of 60% stocks and 40% bonds is doing very
well at the moment — it's risen 17% in the past year. Of course most of that
was produced by stocks which delivered almost 30% (VOO) in the past year. Bonds
provide stability goes the theory since stocks can fall over 1% on any given
day. (The S&P 500 declined 1.5% and the Nasdaq Composite lost 1.7% on April
12, 2024) Advisors are paid well (usually a steady percentage each period) on
the promise they know when to rebalance so that losses are minimized. Curious
that advisors and their managers are paid a set percentage on your assets instead of more or less depending
on how well they “advise.” Successful investor Warren Buffett takes a different
view. His advice is to hold most of your money in a low-cost S&P 500 fund
like Vanguard
500 Index Fund. For your current expenses he recommends a short-term government
bond fund. Thus, depending on your investable asset size, he might advise us to
use a 90/10 asset split.

Some investors
cannot sleep owning over 50% stocks in retirement. John Bogle, founder of
Vanguard funds, recommended owning a percentage of bonds equal to our age. This
conservative approach to a balanced investment portfolio is contrary to Warren

risk of owning more stocks than bonds because they have accepted that, over the

they have sources of income other than their asset portfolio. Perhaps they have
an income source that will remain strong for the rest of their lives. This
situation allows them to ignore when their stock returns vary from +38.02 in 1995
to -37.22 in 2008.
They know their average return will come in between 11% and 12% (11.77% 1990 to 2023)
So every investor must determine their tolerance for portfolio risk! Studies
have shown that the stocks included in the S&P 500 vary annually but
usually return
to its average within 20 years. So, some investors are confident that their
long-term assets will provide a nice return eventually.

NO: this statement is not true. Every
investment has its downside. Your sales person may be offering muni bonds, I
bonds, TIPS bonds, real estate, CDs-fixed accounts, annuity, a 2nd
job, peer-to-peer lending or other idea like delay taking SS benefits. These may
be “safe” at certain times of your financial life but not at other times. I can
tell you that none of these are ‘safe’ in all markets. There are no guarantees
in investing. For instance, your bond, real estate or CD-savings may be worth
less when interest rates go up. Your “peer” may not be able to pay you back.
You may need your SS benefits now because you can’t find work. I have had each
of these experiences in my 40 years of investing. The best advice I have is to
hold a large mix of stocks and fixed income accounts at low cost so that by the
time retirement arrives, you have a combination of all of these that are worth
over $500,000. And stay out of debt, especially vehicle loans.
