Is long-term care insurance right for YOU?

Investing is about compound interest not stock picking

Many of my readers never made more than $100,000 a year yet have grown their nest egg to over $1,000,000. It starts with a goal and commitment to invest $250 a month or $8.33 a day. Investing is about keeping the commitment to yourself and your family. “Staying the course” was what Vanguard’s founder, John Bogle used to say when he gave advice. For the most part, that is what his investors have done during the downdraft of 2022. In your index account, your first 5-year total may be $19,500. Your 10-year total return is about $51,600: 15-year total $104,400; 20-year total $191,400; 25-year total $334,400; 30-year total $569,800; 35-year total $957,000; and 36-year total $1,060,400.

It is all about compounding from $250 a month over 36 years. You paid $108,000 total over 36 years and compounded $250 a month to over $1 million. Low-cost index funds earn over 10% a year on average. Of course the value of $1 million is eroded by inflation over time but would you rather have $1,060,400 or $108,000? And you could spend it all without Fed or state income tax using your tax-FREE account.

All it takes is TIME: https://www.amazon.com/Your-Tax-Haven-Tax-FREE-Americans/dp/1482659441

What does Charlie Munger (Warren Buffett’s colleague) say?

What does Charlie Munger say about paid investment management? “How many managers are going to beat the indexes? All costs considered, I would say maybe 5% could consistently meet the averages. Everybody else is living in the state of extreme denial. They’re used to charging big fees and so forth for stuff that isn’t doing their clients any good. It’s a deep moral depravity. If some widow comes to you with $500,000 and you charge her 1 point [.01%] a year for, and you could put her in the indexes, but you need the 1 point. And so people just charge somewhat a considerable fee for worthless advice. And the whole profession is full of that kind of denial. It’s everywhere.” In Munger’s company 401k, only index funds are offered since participants keep the 1-2% usually taken from their returns. Participants keep all their money’s returns. They avoid giving up to 63% of their returns to ‘professionals’.

Portfolio positioning for the long haul (10+ years)

Readers who have built up their “balanced” portfolio using mutual fund account with 60/40 bonds/stocks have given themselves an edge in this uncertain time. Many who have been moving money to their Vanguard Wellesley Income Fund will find that any recovery in the bond and stock markets will help them continue their periodic RMDs through retirement. This fund has provided 5.8% average annual returns over 10 years. It has produced a negative 1-year return of 4.6%. Its average return has been over 9% per year since 1970. This should easily sustain an annual RMD over time to provide a comfortable retirement income without the life-long excessive annuity costs.

Is long-term care insurance right for YOU?

7.7% Increase in Long-Term Care Benefits Payouts

The number of claimants increased 2.7%, to 345,000, and the average amount of benefits per claimant increased 4.9%, to about $38,400. LTCI growth slowed around 2000, when insurers started to realize that claims would be much higher than expected. Insurers forgot people are living longer and interest rates would not continue at 6-8% after the 1980s. This means that new policies are higher in cost with fewer benefits. A LTCI policy will no longer cover most of your needs. Spending more for a contract now may hinder your ability to come up with your out of pocket expenses later. You may be better off finding a fee-only financial planner (not LTCI salesperson) to help you decide how much to spend on LTCI vs making sure you and your spouse have a better plan. Some readers have decided to spend down their assets so they qualify for nursing home care from Medicaid. Others have chosen to cover the possible costs of part-time help with ADLs or housing alterations.

Why are Congress and Fed only going after worker jobs to fight inflation?

Many readers’ portfolios have returned to their values as of August 2022

In a poll of my readers I have determined that for us “holding-period-forever” folks there has been little movement in the value of our well-balanced portfolio. Not one of us sold during the market drop of 18% in 2022. So we did not sell in a down market as Warren Buffett has recommended. We sold our losing speculative stocks in order to take advantage of the $3,000 loss deduction for 2022 taxes. We bought similar stocks to avoid a “wash sale” penalty. Those similar stocks have risen 38% and 63% since the beginning of 2023 since they began at a very low base. They may eventually crash and burn but they have not changed the whole portfolio so far. Our balanced portfolio can continue to grow in order to provide us with a steady stream of income, provide tax advantages, and can grow tax-deferred over time. In fact, a portfolio like ours is better than an annuity because our portfolios are in low-cost accumulation accounts that don’t lose benefit values to inflation. Better than an annuity, in that our families can use the legacy during their lives instead of losing it to the insurer. We can continue to receive our increasing RMD each month. Our benefit will not lose ½ its benefit’s value in 25 years due to inflation. If we need cash for an emergency or new home, we can take our principal anytime (no penalty). Annuities are insurer contracts that restrict our money withdrawals.

Why are Congress and Fed only going after worker jobs to fight inflation?

Why don’t we use a balanced approach to lowering inflation—everyone shares the suffering? GOP wants to cut the benefits we already paid for and increase defense spending. Why don’t we use both tax increases for the wealthy people who scored big from the Trump tax cuts of 2017 and slashes to the corporate subsidies that add to the super profits of large corporations? We could bar unlimited corporate cash to all Congress people to keep them in office. Ask every gov department to cut spending 10%. Everyone needs a trim from time to time. Allow IRS to capture the tax dollars we know the rich are hiding using sophisticated tax avoidance techniques. Most corporations pay few taxes while the IRS target low-income Black men. It is not fair to target low-wage workers to give up their jobs to lower inflation others caused. How many airplanes can the wealthy buy with their Trump tax cuts? Higher demand for luxury goods causes inflation more than workers getting a 1-2% wage increase. We added 700,000 more millionaires in just one year. The number of wealthy folks increases annually while the number of workers in poverty rose too—inequality gets higher.

IRS: Why refunds are smaller this year

Due to tax law changes such as the elimination of the Advance Child Tax Credit and no Recovery Rebate Credit this year to claim pandemic-related stimulus payments, many taxpayers may find their refunds somewhat lower this year. To avoid refund delays, IRS encourages taxpayers to file their tax return electronically with direct deposit instead of submitting a paper tax return. Taxpayers may use IRS Free File on IRS.gov, other tax software or a trusted tax professional. Members of the armed forces and qualifying veterans can file their federal tax return and up to three state tax returns for free electronically using MilTax, a Department of Defense program. The IRS cannot issue refunds involving the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit before mid-February. The law provides the extra time to help the IRS prevent fraudulent refunds. Use IRS.gov to get answers to tax questionscheck a refund status or pay taxes. Some 2021 tax returns and amended returns are still being processed so check https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return. This year, the filing deadline is April 18 for most taxpayers, but automatic six-month extensions of time to file are available for anyone for free. See Extension of Time to File Your Tax Return for instructions.

“A balanced portfolio still offers the best chance of success”

Vanguard: “A balanced portfolio still offers the best chance of success”

Tradition offers the balanced advice. History says EMM and Small Cap follows decline for large stocks. But any smart market watcher must admit it is difficult if not impossible to time the market. The balanced portfolio with some tilting provides fair returns over time. Some older readers overweight the more stable Vanguard funds like Wellesley Income since it has proven a 9% plus return for a long time. Most notable for my readers’ favorite funds is the fact that costs are much less than a Wall Street firm portfolio.

2022 Total Return Vanguard Fund   Long-term Return      Longevity

-19.8% 500 Index                                            10.8% since 1976

https://www.amazon.com/Vanguards-Top-Ten-mutual-funds/dp/150073909X/

Don’t waste your money on these expenses

Advisors don’t know what will happen in 2023 and beyond so don’t waste that 1-2% on quarterly fees, market timing schemes, or firm’s “special circumstance” stocks. If these folks were consistently picking winners, timing or lowering fees, we would all know about it. Big banks fire investment strategists. Financial writers recommend gold as a hedge, home/car warranties as protection, and consolidating debt as 2023 money moves. These are money wasters. My readers have found that cost of financial services is the best predictor of success: pay less; keep more. This is why Warren Buffett recommends buy and hold a low-cost market index fund for everyone who does not have his investing prowess. He is wealthy. His advice is FREE.

https://www.amazon.com/Warren-Buffetts-Investment-Strategy-Forget/dp/1484822900

New Years Resolutions: avoid financial mistakes

It is easy to get into trouble financially. Once you have a credit card you will use it and may run up debt. We have all done it but at 29% interest, it would take 5 years and $317 per month to pay the $9,045 interest and original $10,000. You pay double only IF you cut the card. If you are also paying off a student debt, you might lose your credit score. If you buy a car/house that requires continuous care, you might be over your head. Same if you quit a job before you have another or stayed at an old one too long. Raises don’t keep up with cost increases. Adequate car and term life insurance is all you need for protection. Phone service deals may help you. As Consumer Reports repeatedly warns, many extended auto-warranty policies are a bad deal. A review by Consumers’ Checkbook of home warranty plans found they rarely are worth the price or hassle. Better to invest for a rainy day: $317 a month for 5 years in a low-cost market index will provide about $25,000.

Investment strategies to fund long-term retirement expenses

There are 4 styles of investment during the long retirement spending period according to the research of Murguia and PfauFour of the broad strategies identified include a total return preference, in which a person spends systematically from a diversified investment portfolio focused on total returns; an income protection preference that involves building a lifetime income floor with fixed annuities; a risk wrap approach, which builds a lifetime income floor with variable annuities offering lifetime withdrawal benefits wrapped around a risk-based portfolio; and a time segmentation preference that resembles a bucketing strategy that uses less volatile assets for shorter-term expenses and riskier assets offering higher growth potential for longer-term expenses. According to Murguia and Pfau, approximately 35% of individuals between ages 50 and 80 identified most closely with the income protection approach. This is followed by 33% who preferred a total return approach, 17% who preferred time segmentation and 15% who favored a risk wrap strategy. “With this distribution of preferences, it is misguided to narrowly promote one type of retirement strategy as above others,” Murguia and Pfau conclude. Warren Buffett has specified in his will how his heirs should follow a strategy that resembles the bucketing strategy: One will provide cash for the coming year and the other will provide a sound future. Most of us have annuity-type income floors in SS and RMDs funding.

Our Universe is Mind-Blowing

Light is both a particle and a wave depending on how we look at the light.

I don’t think that there is any such thing as a position or a velocity of a particle.

Everything (galaxies to stones) in universe made of subatomic energy ‘vibrations’

A subatomic ‘particle’ is the smallest possible vibration (quantum) of a quantum field.

Mass–energy equivalence: E=mc^2.  At the smallest level; Everything is moving a little

Energy into matter: scientists converted light energy directly into matter in one step

Physics Nobel Prize: “entanglement” 2 particles share info instantly at a distance

“It may be that gravity and quantum mechanics are exactly the same thing,” Leonard Susskind

Gravity might induce the collapse of quantum vibrations into 1 quantum state—our world

There is no TIME at this level because of force fields come and go in all directions.

Universe expanding: events may not come together like they did before.

Inside protons, neutrons, it is the fields of the virtual particles that creates its mass.

Gold made from neutron stars: collisions produce more neutrons:79 protons,118 neutrons

The proton is so complicated science still finds new energy entities/forces every year.

“Empty space is a boiling, bubbling brew of virtual particles that pop in and out of existence in a time scale so short that you can’t even measure them.” Space expanding.

The electricity we use comes from the field around the wire not from election itself.

Scientists build 'baby' wormhole as sci-fi moves closer to fact: inside quantum computer
