What to do with your RMD: 17 alternatives

What to do with your RMD: How much will you spend?
Your RMD or required minimum distribution is the amount the IRS calculates for income tax purposes from your retirement accounts annually after your turn age 70½. You may want to invest part of it for the future or cut the amount in your IRA that you will pay tax on in coming years or contribute to legitimate charities. I help you answer these questions now: Will you have enough? How will you invest? How much will you spend? Explore 17 alternative uses of your RMD. Create tax-FREE income from your IRA while reducing future RMD. Take advantage of the miracle of compounding: $100,000 may become $500,000 in 15 years. Create an investment plan for 30+ retirement years. Self-insure and self-fund all your financial needs. Social Security to cut benefits in 2034 so you may need more income later. You have time to do something about the future.

Trump tax plan has NOT brought outsourced cash back for jobs in US
GOP gave corporate America a great deal besides cutting rates so actual rates are less than 15%. Apple, Microsoft, Google, Oracle and Netflix have removed from reports any mention of their overseas cash totaling $ TRILLIONS. Most corps have given their senior staff and shareholders BIG raises but have hired few new taxpayers. GOP’s new 15.5% rate on repatriated cash seems to have few payers. But if the $ Trillions are not tracked, how will we know if the special tax deal we must pay for is effective? We taxpayers will still have to pick up the slack since most corps don’t need capital or jobs here in US. Most will find their next decade of profits overseas so they plan to use the money there. Why pay 15.5% when they can pay 0% in most tax shelters. Apple hides their cash in Jersey, an island off France. I would keep my money in 0% tax Jersey if I could too.

Do you need a gift for your grad?
Best gift for your graduate: The Gift of a Lifetime.
Your monthly gift could provide your grandchild with real ‘social security:’ their own tax-FREE money. You take advantage of the miracle of compounding. Your gift becomes a $2,000,000 tax-FREE Wealth Reserve. You could reduce your taxable estate by $500,000 for each grandchild. Your grandchild will NEVER have to pay taxes on the money either. Social Security will exhaust its funds in about 2034. Every year you delay costs your favorite kid $100,000 later.

Are you eligible for Medicaid to pay your long-term care costs?
The way annuities can help with Medicaid eligibility is that they can transform otherwise countable assets, such as savings accounts, into a non-countable income stream, thus protecting assets for heirs while spending down what counts against you in Medicaid eligibility. You are essentially giving up your asset temporarily. So the annuity must be non-cancelable and non-assignable and name the state as beneficiary for at least the value of the Medicaid assistance received (exception for disabled child). Thus most annuities sold do not fit the requirement. You must obtain a confirming statement from the insurer to protect yourself. Typically it is a single premium immediate payout annuity. State law varies so use a qualified sales person. This strategy may not work for you since you won’t know for sure it works until you need it. Your spouse will not be made destitute in this process if you plan well.

How much are ‘reasonable’ advisor fees?
Again, it depends. How much is your advisor doing for you? Money management only costs 0.22% for a balanced (bond/stock) fund with a 40 year history of providing superior returns (9.4% a year). If your advisor is giving you financial planning services, including mortgage, college, tax and retirement funding, quality will cost you 0.30-0.50% of your <$1 million portfolio each year. If you just want periodic advice, pay $500-$2,000 an hour to a certified financial planner, depending on your needs. That way you pay as you go for professional services and leave the money management to institutions that know what they are doing. Investors not traders go for the long term rewards. If your advisor is asking you to move your money to another firm it is because they are getting a bonus up to $600,000 and you don’t want to be around as he has to make it to the firm next year.

Why do you need 12 Energy ETFs?
The fact that every brokerage firm seems to be pushing its own commissioned index with annual fees up to 1% should not surprise anyone. But I am. Some 3 year returns are negative (-16%). Some don’t even have them. All earn less than the proven market leader with over 10% returns since 1984 and no commission and lower annual cost of 0.41%. If you know when energy prices will spike, which one of the 12 should you buy? Can your broker tell you when to sell? If you have insider knowledge, why not just buy the company stock? What about the gains from oil and gas company earnings? China seems to own the solar panel market. Is that your short- or long-term bet?

Can you time the market declines/risings?
Many studies have been done on this strategy. When you listen to market commentators and they talk ‘over weight’, ‘sector rotation’ and ‘moving to cash during the cycle’, remember they are getting paid very well at sounding good trying to predict the future ($1 million is  better than fortune tellers). They are not actually doing what they talk about. Their wealth does NOT come from their ‘insight’ into market tea leaves but from entertainment TV sponsors. The reality is that timing and picking does not work. Look at one study ended 2015. How would you have done if you missed the market’s top-performing days, assuming you can’t predict the future? Your $100,000 investment would have reached $120,230 if you missed 25 days of the 7,300 days. However, if you were out for 20 days, then $148,698; 15 then $186,715; 10 then $238,637; only FIVE then $317,215. If you never left the market, then $478,171! Your money went up 378%! That’s about 8% a year nominal. $478,171 is more than $120,230. It’s time not timing!

Advisors are now allowed to sell you the worst products (best for them)
A court struck down Labor’s fiduciary rule so the DOL said it won’t enforce ‘prohibited transactions’. Sellers will go back to selling annuities to 90 year old widows as they did before. Lawsuits have been brought that allege that certain insurance companies and banks target elders and use scare tactics to pressure seniors into investing their life savings in deferred annuities, which can make the seniors’ savings inaccessible for 10-20 years, can carry exorbitant surrender charges and severe tax penalties, and can create complicated estate problems after death. Appealing, yet misleading, sales pitches to seniors often describe annuities as “guaranteed” and compare them to having money in the bank that is “safe” but pays a better return. Confusing language in the annuity contract often obscures the devastating fees involved if money needs to be withdrawn as the senior citizen ages. Additionally, many of these annuity products are sold by agents being paid significant commissions for such sales, creating a potential conflict of interest. Don’t settle for poor products. Use firms that put your best interests first.

Is it worth making a financial plan?
People who make a financial plan are more likely to be ready for whatever our economy throws at them. Companies and their jobs can come and go in a very short time. Even though it seems that people who want to work can find a job in today’s market, our situation can change quickly. If there are tons of jobs in another region, can we just pick up and leave? Most people need time to adjust—move or find another job. This takes an emergency fund. According to a Schwab study, 65% of people who plan have one; 24% of non-planners do not have one. People who plan are less likely to live paycheck to paycheck. They feel financially stable. Making a plan does not require you to hire a financial planner or open a brokerage account. It takes just 2 weekends.

Trump gives Carrier our tax money for HALF Mexican jobs

Trump takes credit for Carrier jobs paid for by our taxes
The Don is taking a victory lap after giving more of our taxes to Carrier and its parent United Tech. Did he really make the largest Pentagon contractor stop sending jobs to Mexico as he promised? While he is touring his supporters, we find out that he did NOT stop corporations from outsourcing our best-paying jobs. It cost us over $50 million in tax breaks to United Technologies. Tax payers in IN also gave Carrier $7 million in tax breaks to retain HALF the workers but not the furnace jobs sent to Mexico. United Technologies will still close its Huntington, IN plant that employs 700. Carrier already built their Mexico factory and pay $3 an hour there. This deal is like the state socialist subsidies to other corporations. That is $7000 for each worker. But how many firms can IN keep paying to stay in US? Our “reps” in Washington have created state socialism for America’s largest corporations. There is a reason for the 10,000 highly-paid lobbyists in Washington. Corporations pay about $3 billion a year to keep our tax dollars flowing into the hands of profitable businesses. How long can America’s Socialism for Rich survive?
Use your tax credits to avoid paying corp. subsidies:  https://www.amazon.com/Tax-Credit-Class-your-credits-ZERO/dp/1539462382

The Don’s real tax plan is NOT what he said:
“The largest tax reductions are for the middle class,” said Trump’s “Contract With the American Voter,” released last month.
REALITY: And while middle-class families as a whole would receive tax cuts of about 2 percent, they’d be dwarfed by the windfalls averaging 13.5% for the top 1%. The tax hikes that would hit single parents and large families would result from Trump’s plan to eliminate the personal exemption and the head-of-household filing status. His other proposed tax changes would benefit middle- and lower-income Americans. But they wouldn’t be enough to offset those modifications. His plan follows GOP policy—cut taxes for the rich and hope they will create 25 million jobs. KS is now bankrupt because of this policy.  This myth was disproved with Bush II. His tax cuts just widened the gulf between the 1% and us. Most wealthy people invested overseas or hid the money in tax shelters like Romney. Jobs are created when the middle class has money to spend. Wealthy have all the yachts they want. They are spending the tax cuts on art not jobs.

GOP won in WI by 27,000 votes but 300,000 barred from voting
“The damn Republicans,” he said, “don’t want Latinos and old people to vote.”  The stories are heart-wrenching. 85 year old with expired (1 week) license was blocked. In TX, 12.8 percent of registered voters who didn’t vote in the election cited lack of required photo ID as a reason they didn’t cast a ballot, even though only 2.7 percent of registered voters actually lacked an acceptable ID. On Election Day, there were 868 fewer polling places in states with a long history of voting discrimination, like Arizona, Texas, and North Carolina868 voting places closed since 2014 in 14 states. GOP claims voter fraud but only 4 cases found for elections. The Don knew it was rigged and kept saying he would win despite the polls.
Trump election is void—he claims millions voted illegally. Millions of Dems were kept out of voting places. His election is not valid. Most people voted for Dems.
We Americans are not stupid enough to make a psychotic con man President of the US.

Where do you find an unbiased financial advisor?
If you have been wondering why your account has not been accumulating in the last few years, it could be that your advisor is just moving your money around in bad performing funds so they can justify fees. Remember, no one can predict the future. In most broker statements, the costs for each fund are not shown. You see the net AFTER the securities’ fees. Your advisor fee may be low—0.020%—but each investment they put you in has fees which come off the top and so are not shown. If your advisor has you in funds that take 2% a year (fees plus transaction costs) your account may show some gains and some losses but over time your account total may not progress much. If a simple balanced fund using indexed stocks and bonds has risen 45% (stocks 58%) in the last 10 years, and your advisor’s choice of a Franklin fund was -14% (it was up 9% at 5 years), you need to make a change. Statements usually don’t show a direct comparison to a benchmark like Vanguard’s Balanced fund, but you can compare your results yourself. If your account was $50,000 10 years ago it should be up by 6.78% a year or $98,000 now. Your Franklin and the balanced fund both went down twice in 10 years. Broker firms have to take their profits. Warren Buffett is an unbiased advisor. Maybe you should try him.

GOP cutting services to poor: Socialism for the Rich?
TX has decided to cut Medicaid payments for disabled kids. Opponents argued that the cuts would disrupt care — including speech, physical and occupational therapies — for tens of thousands of kids especially in rural areas. "Our most vulnerable children and their struggling families should not bear the brunt of this shortsighted and cruel budget decision," one critic complained. New Attorney General Sessions thinks our federal protections for students with disabilities was a reason our schools were failing.

Expect value of your Trump stocks to increase
Since The Don does not disclose, best guess is that he owns Apple, Ford, and millions of dollars worth of shares in oil and other energy companies that could stand to gain if he follows through on promises to loosen environmental regulations and pursue more drilling — including Halliburton, ExxonMobil, Occidental Petroleum and Phillips 66. Energy stocks have already moved up in 2016. Obama opened many drilling areas so this sector may have peaked with the recent OPEC deal to cut production. If Don goes after Apple’s $ billions overseas to collect back taxes, this may lower its value in the short term. Since it is likely that Don’s kids hold similar positions, his decisions may push these holdings higher during his reign. He will make sure his family does not ‘suffer.’

That Mexico sends "rapists" and other criminals into America.
He claimed he personally witnessed "thousands and thousands" of Muslims celebrate 9/11 in NJ.
Ted Cruz's Cuban-born father Rafael Cruz was linked to the JFK assassination.
That Antonin Scalia was murdered,
That Clinton used drugs before a debate,
That "globalists" (read: prominent Jews) are trying to take over America
That vaccines cause autism.
Trump does NOT take the daily intelligence report but watches TV—Fox, CNN,

We are entering the Twilight Zone:
"There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone."

We wanted change: “It could have been Captain Kangaroo and he might have won.”
The Don is interviewing everyone he saw on TV: K.T. McFarland, Gingrich, Ben Carson, Bolton, Crowley, Huckabee, Scott Brown. These are all Fox News mainstays. “What becomes of Fox News?”

I am the only one who knows who the finalists are!” Hillary for State?
Like mafia family, The Don has never had a boss, no corporate board to question his acts!

Actual outcomes: (“So much for draining the swamp”)

Carrier paid with IN tax credits to keep HALF jobs in Indy and Trump takes credit
Laid off workers will not be able to buy ObamaCare -- so lose twice.

Dems won by 2.5 million: GOP barred voters, Greens took Clinton votes WI, PA MI.

The Don claims he won popular vote "if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally", though he provided no evidence of widespread voter fraud. Recount is scam.

The Don thinks that maybe torture is not what the generals want.

The Don may believe in climate change by man after all.

The Don will “replace” ObamaCare immediately with something “terrific” that is “so much better, so much better, so much better.” 20 million people use ObamaCare. So why do more Trumpers sign up for ObamaCare if it will be gone Jan 20? $75 a month?

Deportations: “get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers, where a lot of these people, probably 2 million, it could be even 3 million, we are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate.”

Giuliani paid millions by Mexican politician running anti-Trump platform in 2018. Wow

NATO EU UN defunding: Weakening NATO, EU and UN ties is Putin’s goal in regaining Russia’s superpower status. The Don has been flattered by KGB: no friend.

End of Iran deal would be ‘folly’ according to CIA Brennan. “Disaster” for proliferation.

Tax cuts: Single parents and large family will pay more—1%ers get 13% cut.

Cut taxes so econ grows: wealthy get most breaks
Economy is doing fine without cuts: Obama economy created 178,000 jobs in November, and the unemployment rate fell to 4.6% from 4.9% in October. 10 million new jobs under Obama.

Stop corporations sending profits (UNTAXED) overseas.

Stop government subsidies (socialism) to oil, gas, agribusiness, drug corporations:

Reinstatement of the Glass-Steagall to keep speculation from consumer banks.

Trump kids become national security advisors—get top-secret clearance. Giuliani claims “they can’t work in the government because of the government rule against nepotism.” But they can use the information in Trump’s companies and insider trading.

Stop flow of jobs out of US but corp welfare was paid
Ford will still build $2 billion factory in Mexico but does not send KY jobs there yet.
Fiat building new factory for Jeep Compass in Toluca Mexico. Labor is ½ price.
Carrier agreed to 1,000 new jobs in Indy—not furnaces. Taxpayer incentives given.
Trump’s deal “saves” less than half of the total jobs, for a subsidy from IN. Jobs still go to Mexico.

The Don will NOT show his tax returns or his birth certificate. He does not pay taxes.

The Don’s big bluff: what will be done has changed every day since election.

Obama’s rule giving overtime pay to 4.2 million US workers blocked. Trumpers lose

Propaganda wins: 82% middle-school students could not distinguish between an ad labeled “sponsored content” and a real news story.

The Don’s new sub bosses (mostly billionaires with own conflicts of interest kiss ring):

Steve Bannon, WH chief strategist (spin doctor), selecting his campaign CEO, former Breitbart News chair, accused of white nationalist. Many condemned him for "aggressively pushing stories against immigrants" and his association with "unabashed anti-Semites and racists." The characterization of Bannon himself as anti-Semitic, racist, and white nationalist has been based mostly on articles published at Brietbart News, an alt-right news website. What to expect from Don (Steve): http://www.forbes.com/sites/ellenkilloran/2016/11/14/steve-bannon-and-breitbart-news-why-everyone-but-the-alt-right-fears-trumps-top-adviser-pick/#21e9751b504f

Jeff Sessions top law officer, was rejected for judgeships by GOP because racist remarks:
Sessions had referred to the N.A.A.C.P., the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and other civil rights groups as “un-American” and “Communist-inspired.” An African-American federal prosecutor then, Thomas H. Figures, said Mr. Sessions had referred to him as “boy” and testified that Sessions said the Ku Klux Klan was fine “until I found out they smoked pot.” He does not like the Voting Rights Act and the stringent oversight it placed on Southern states. He was rejected for a judgeship by the Senate in

Steven Mnuchin, Treasury, former Goldman Sachs, hedge fund, (Clinton, Bush II, Obama all had GS masters of the universe). (“So much for draining the swamp”) Will write tax law for brother billionaires. Long family ties to GS. Active in mortgage-backed bond trading which brought down our financial system. GS created the packages of bad loans, sold them and then bet their own money that they would fail. Mnuchin is a “very smart guy,” Lloyd Blankfein, chief executive of Goldman Sachs. Yes, and got rich from all the home foreclosures. Using wealth to steer political decisions. Disputes Trump plan

Mike Flynn, national security adviser, thinks that Shariah, or Islamic law, is spreading in the United States (it is not). His dubious assertions are so common that when he ran the Defense Intelligence Agency, subordinates came up with a name for the phenomenon: They called them “Flynn facts.” Flynn thinks Putin is an ally in fight against ISL. He worked for Russia Today, a Kremlin TV network. He was leading chants of “lock her up” against Hillary Clinton at rallies for The Don.

Mike Pompeo, CIA director, House Intelligence Committee, gained prominence for his role in the congressional investigation into the 2012 attack on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. He was a sharp critic of Hillary Clinton and thinks there was a cover-up. When the committee found no new evidence of wrongdoing by the Obama administration or Mrs. Clinton, Mr. Pompeo and Mr. Jordan filed a 48-page addendum that included far harsher criticism. Regarding the Iran anti-nuclear agreement, Pompeo thinks we should “walk away from this deal.” He has ties to the Kochs, the billionaire conservatives whose Koch Industries has provided his funding.

Mad Dog Mattis, Defense, life-time Marine, led our attack on Afghanistan after 9/11, worked with NATO. Defense is a civilian position never intended to be a kind of Joint Chiefs of Staff on steroids, and that’s the biggest single risk tied to Mattis. Congress must overlook the law for Mattis. Think Col Jessup in Few Good Men.

Wilbur Ross, Commerce, known as the king of bankruptcy for his investments in distressed properties, since he fires workers to make profits in restructuring, especially in steel (LTV). He got investors to accept Trump as Taj head for bankruptcy. Famous as “vulture” investor at Texaco, TWA, Continental.

Tom Price, Health care, was House Budget Committee Chair. He wrote GOP alternative of tax credit vouchers you use to buy your own policy if you can find one. “We think it’s important that Washington not be in charge of health care,” the six-term congressman said in an interview this summer. “The problem that I have with Obamacare is that its premise is that Washington knows best.” Before ObamaCare, high cost insurance could be deducted from your taxes. In effect, we will buy our own coverage without the guarantees that it meets minimum standards. Insurers will not have to offer a policy at an affordable price. The rich can obtain tax-FREE savings in a health care account.

Seema Verma, head, Medicare and Medicaid was a consultant to Mike Pence who negotiated Medicaid deal for IN. Medicaid in IN enrolled many of IN uninsured families.

"KT" McFarland, deputy national security adviser, is a Fox “News” commentator. She was deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs under President Ronald Reagan and between 1982 and 1985 as defense secretary Caspar Weinberger's speechwriter and spokeswoman. She was the “spin doctor.”

Myron Ebell, EPA, is a climate-change denier who directs the Center for Energy and Environment at the Competitive Enterprise Institute. The group's website, SafeChemicalPolicy.org, exists to downplay the health and ecological impacts of chemicals. “Pesticides aren’t bad for you.” “Honeybees decline not linked to pesticides.”

Betsy DeVos, education, a billionaire philanthropist with deep ties to the Christian Reformed community in Michigan. She is known for reforming public schools by funding private schools (vouchers) with tax money. Heir to Amway and Clinton Foundation donors, the DeVos said Trump “does not represent the Republican Party.”

Elaine Chao, Transportation, McConnell’s wife, former Labor head for Bush II. She will lead Trump’s plan to rebuild the nation’s infrastructure. He promised to rebuild bridges, roads, etc, spending $1 trillion if McConnell and Ryan let him.

Do-Nothing Congress will decide US future by doing nothing for more 4 years.

Axmen: Kushner, Giuliani, Sessions, Carson, Russian Manafort, cabinet

Enemies List: Clintons, Ryan, Graham, Cruz, Rubio, Bloomberg, DeBlazio, Gold star Kahns, NYTimes, NYPost, WashPost, Univision, Megyn Kelly, judge and claimants in Trump U. case, women accusers, Trump canceled brother’s insurance, Christie (for humiliating Kushner dad in 2005), Christie sued over shutting Fed property.

Regulators are the only protection we have since we can’t sue anymore
Supremes stop us from suing—State courts no longer available to sue corporations!

Police want gun control.
