Your RMD--Correction

Will a $250,000 retirement fund be enough?

CORRECTION

Last week: “Your RMD will tell you how much you need in retirement” blurb was misleading. RMD is the required minimum distribution from your deferred retirement accounts (401k, 403b, other pension) so that income taxes can be assessed. The amount of your RMD is calculated by your mutual fund or brokerage from IRS tables based on your age and deferred accounts total at the end of the previous year. Because we all must withdrawal our amount, use an RMD calculator to test the total amount we will need to live on in retirement: our nest egg. https://www.aarp.org/work/retirement-planning/required-minimum-distribution-calculator.html For instance, if I need $833 a month, $10,000 a year for my basic needs, I use this calculator to estimate how much of a fund to accumulate. Based on this estimate, I will need to accumulate at least $250,000 in order to cover my basic spending. The IRS tables and our life expectancy changes so don’t use this calculator to determine your RMD for yourself. You can take your RMD out of one account, or take bits from each one, so long as you withdraw the required minimum amount. You can take more but it is taxed.

Stocks are on sale but you must be patient

Stocks represent ownership of a company. If you are patient, the value of what you own can grow significantly. Some stocks produce dividends (profits) that are taxable and some don’t. For instance, if you had purchased one share in Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway in each year since 1965, you would be a multimillionaire. You would own parts of 50 profitable companies. Each share is worth over $500,000. The value of your stocks grew at 20% a year on average but you had to be patient. (Annual report, p 3) You lost 48% of the value in 1974 but gained 129% in 2 years. Buffett does not pay dividends so you would have paid no taxes on this stock each year. You pay when you sell. However, you could borrow from your broker with stock as collateral if you needed quick money. The stock is down 10% —HALF of the broad market index decline YTD. There are many stocks that retain earnings (no dividends) so you have your choice of assets without paying tax on growth every year. You choose when to pay taxes.

Best Way to Withdraw From Your Retirement Accounts

When we retire we are faced with decisions that we should have planned before the day of retirement. Based on our goals for the future, we should have decided in advance which accounts to hit first, second and third. We should have already decided to transfer our tax-deferred accounts from our employer and former employers to one trustee—a mutual fund or brokerage. We should have already decided to take Social Security or wait to maximize our benefits. Some wait to their age 70 to receive almost double the amount at age 62. We should have already calculated our basic spending needs so that we would know we would use only the required minimum distribution not our Roth IRA or our individual securities. We should have already calculated how much tax we would pay on our RMD, Social Security and pension benefits. If we use fixed income assets like CDs and annuities, we may owe tax on these accumulations. You may have other issues and questions about the sequence of spending so a fixed-fee financial planner may be the best option at this time. A one-time fee is cheaper than 1-2% annual fee for 30 years.

You don’t need an advisor to accumulate a $1,000,000 fund

Saving and investing is not as hard as the financial industry makes it out to be. The folks who are successful in accumulation for retirement follow a few simple rules that they learned early, usually from their parents. Schools don’t teach basic investing. They teach how to open a bank account to spend a pay check. Employers can’t give us good advice since that makes them liable for our mistakes. Rule 1: start early—use your first employer’s tax advantaged plan. Rule 2: invest in low-cost stock index mutual funds inside a tax-deferred of tax-FREE account—use an IRA if your employer’s options cost more than 0.15%. Rule 3: invest the same amount each payday. Market timing and stock picking do not work over time. Rule 4: Cost is the best predictor of success. You can plan for retirement the correct way and have a $1 million when you need it.

Light is both a particle and a wave depending on how we look at the light.

I don’t think that there is any such thing as a position or a velocity of a particle.

Everything (galaxies to stones) in universe made of subatomic energy ‘vibrations’

A subatomic ‘particle’ is the smallest possible vibration (quantum) of a quantum field.

Mass–energy equivalence: E=mc^2.  At the smallest level; Everything is moving!

There is no TIME at this level because of force fields come and go in all directions.

Universe expanding: events may not come together like they did before.

Inside protons, neutrons, it is the fields of the virtual particles that creates its mass.

“Empty space is a boiling, bubbling brew of virtual particles that pop in and out of existence in a time scale so short that you can’t even measure them.” Space expanding.

The electricity we use comes from the field around the wire not from election itself.

Have you taught your child how to make money?

Retirement is a dirty word to some Boomers

“For the first time in well over 25 years, we see a marked decline in labor force participation of older Americans and a marked rise in the share of them that are retired,” said Richard Fry, a labor economist with the Pew Research Center. But many Boomers just can’t let go of their ‘babies.’ Other goals/pursuits/hobbies need to be explored to make the transition. The hard part: “That whole process of thinking about work on the way to work, of planning mentally your day.” Some of us have had to plan how much we can spend and how we want to spend our time. We need to consider our costs for a longer period of time in retirement since we are living longer. Some of us are still paying off our mortgage. I found the Retirement Nest Egg Calculator useful in determining my asset composition for long-term spending. I know how much of each group—stock, bond, cash—I need to hold in order to sustain my income for 30 more years, including inflation.

My plan gives me confidence: https://www.amazon.com/Your-Retirement-Income-Checklist-TrumpWorld/dp/1544703260

Living beyond our means: walking a tightrope without a net

Most of us are living paycheck to paycheck, according to a recent survey. Where are you in these findings?

  • Incomes of more than $100,000: 42%
  • Incomes of $50,000 to $100,000: 66%
  • Incomes of less than $50,000: 77%

It seems the more we make, we still live dangerously. If we have an emergency expense or are laid off, many of us will be facing hard choices. Many households have only one paycheck coming in. This makes life even more precarious. Contrary to the industry advice, you don’t need an expensive advisor to build a financial safety net. All of us have access to a savings account or a home money jar. About 40% of us are paying our bills on time. That means we are not wasting our cash on up to 24% bank card interest. That may be your first task—reduce your outstanding balance so if there is an emergency, you can ‘charge’ it. Second, saving or investing in an account at work may help you get over the monthly savings ‘wall.’ You don’t have to save what is left after your check is spent. Each $100 you add to your employer 401k or other pension account comes out before you see it. And it saves you current taxes. You may even be given a FREE money match. If your job does not offer this account, you can make your own tax-managed account online or at your bank. The trustee for this account can help you save by automatically debiting your checking account monthly. You don’t have to face the savings ‘wall.’

Start today; feel safer: https://www.amazon.com/Get-What-You-Want-FINANCIAL-PLAN/dp/1514751151

New American Retirement System: $2,000,000 Tax FREE

Create a $2,000,000 tax-FREE Retirement System. Use the best legal tax shelter: no taxes . . . ever. Tax-favored over a 401k even with 6% match* Protect your family and assets with your System. Borrow from your System to pay for large purchases. Buy whatever you need without going into debt to others. Self-insure manageable risks—invest the premiums saved. Buy financial services wholesale--save $3,000 a year. Manage your System in 1 hour per year. $2 million can produce $160,000 a year in retirement. No income taxes—spend it all. What is the hitch? You have to buy low-cost stock index mutual fund automatically every month. You can’t trade or stop investing. I will help you set up account on the phone: https://www.amazon.com/New-American-Retirement-System-ReserveTM/dp/1461030072

Have you taught your child how to make money?

Make sure you teach your kids how to create wealth the easy way. My parents were not investors. At my first job, I had no clue which investment option to use for my 401k contribution and company match. The HR person told me to put it into the 'safe' stable value fund. That was the worst choice at my age I learned later when I got my securities licenses. If I had followed their advice I would have ended up with $150,000 instead of a Wealth Reserve of $877,233 about 33 years later. I have used this 'Wealth Reserve' as I call it to have funds to use low-cost insurance, to buy two homes and 5 cars with higher down payments or cash, and now to receive $2,500 a monthly in retirement supplement. Now your child can build an account that provides tax-FREE retirement income too.

Time is on their side: https://www.amazon.com/Give-your-child-leg-up-manage/dp/1096505355

Putting your refund to good use

The average refund is $3,000. Save the $300-$600 tax prep cost by doing your tax return using IRS-approved tax software via IRS free file. Or AARP free tax prep. Do not mail your return since IRS is still processing 2019 paper returns. I just got my refund! Have your refund put in your account directly—direct deposit is the safest way to finish your taxes. Take all your credits: Child and Dependent Care Credit was supercharged through the 2021 American Rescue Plan. Parents can receive a tax credit worth as much as $8,000 — nearly four times the previous limit of $2,100. The Child Tax Credit provided funds throughout the year but some families may have been shortchanged. The expanded Child Tax Credit, by comparison, provides $3,600 for each child under six and $3,000 for children aged 6 to 17. The fact that the tax credit is also fully refundable is important because it could boost the tax refund that many parents receive this year. Invest your refund each year and you could have $500,000. Start your tax-FREE retirement fund so you have enough later on. When you can no longer work, you can spend ALL of your investment earnings—no taxes. This helps avoid taxes on your Social Security too.

Insurance agents balk at providing full disclosure products

Insurance agents are suing the Labor Dept because they will be required to become fiduciaries to sell annuities to retirees. The fiduciary rule requires them to explain how they get paid, makes them liability if the annuity increases investor risk and may end their commission-based compensation arrangements. Agents fear having to disclose their conflicts of interest in pay from insurers and third parties. A fiduciary must provide the best product for the client which usually means lower rewards for the seller. Agents claim they will not be able to afford to sell annuities to working people since simple fees are lower than complex commissions: Some agents are paid with an advance on part of the client’s earnings over the 10-12 year future. Thus clients earn less than they would have. This is usually not disclosed in the traditional annuity sales process. Only later do client’s find out. Then they are charged 1-10% to get their money back. Insurers are lobbying Congress to force us to put our 401k nest egg into an annuity when we retire.

Let Uncle Sam help with your retirement fund

Make the New Year better

The easy way to create your $ million retirement fund

Some of my readers use this strategy to build their retirement fund. They use their tax refund (average $3,000) to buy the low-cost 500 Index Fund so they can automatically invest without having to write a check every month. The tax refund happens because they are making sure they don’t owe the IRS any money in April. Their employer deducts the standard amount from their check every pay period. They never see the money deducted—they receive their net pay and have to live on that amount. If forced savings is not for you, the alternative is to have your mutual fund deduct $250 a month from your checking account. After 35 years, your $1 million is tax-FREE using a special account.

https://www.amazon.com/Tax-Refund-Millionaires-Let-Uncle-Help/dp/149595644X

Is a registered index-linked annuity right for you?

Registered index-linked annuities use index options to provide both upside potential and downside protection. Insurers are replacing traditional variable annuities that offer living benefits with RILA products. “Insurers indicate that they are using the RILA to pivot away from risky guaranteed living benefits,” according to analysts at Cerulli Associates. Insurers are taking less financial risk by cutting the living benefit option. The living benefit is intended to guarantee the benefit provided, and toward that end, it usually offers guaranteed protection of the principal investment and the annuity payments or guarantees a minimum income over a specified period to you and your beneficiary. Usually the guarantees cost you more and many believe the extra cost is not worthwhile. Insurers are eliminating their financial risk of having to pay more due to unforeseen circumstances. Instead they offer the possibility of your account earning more over time. Variable annuities are popular when the fixed rate of traditional annuities is very low. Currently the fixed rate is under 3% so it does not even cover the inflation rate. Because all annuities come with extra fees and cost, you may be better off using a low-cost balanced mutual fund to meet your retirement income needs.

https://www.amazon.com/Best-Annuity-Strategy-Income-Growth/dp/1497532019

Is a tax-FREE retirement fund right for you?

Since 1998, working people have been able to create a legal tax shelter. Every $1 contributed to this IRS-approved account at your favorite financial institution can grow tax FREE and be withdrawn tax FREE. This means that instead of you paying taxes on the money you take out later, you pay ZERO taxes. Because you have no tax liability on this money, your other income like Social Security may not be taxed. With the old pension system, you had to pay tax on the income because your employer paid no taxes as the pension amount grew. Because you had taxable income when you retired, your Social Security was also taxed. Now some of us who have been using the new system for a while pay no income taxes when we take out this money from our accounts. Thus, by investing $250 a month in a low-cost stock index, after about 35 years, your account reaches $1 million. This money is tax-FREE. Your gains—$895,000 ($105,000 in; $1,000,000 out)—are completely tax FREE.

Use your tax shelter: https://www.amazon.com/New-American-Retirement-System-ReserveTM/dp/1461030072/

Tax withholding part of your IRA distributions is usually required

The IRS is taking no chances so they require distributions to have taxes taken out before you receive your money. Traditional IRA accounts let us defer taxes during our working years. Now the IRS wants their money. If the distribution is in the form of an annuity or similar payments, amounts are withheld as though each distribution were a payment of wages pursuant to the recipient’s W-4 form. For other kinds of distribution, a flat 10% must be withheld by the plan custodian unless a different withholding is elected by the owner. Even though distributions from a traditional IRA may be partly nontaxable because of nondeductible contributions, all withdrawn amounts must be reported to the IRS. Distributions from Roth IRAs are not subject to income tax withholding in most cases. Most distributions are NOT included in taxable income since we paid tax on the income already and the earnings are Uncle Sam’s tax-FREE gift to us for making a nice nest egg. So it is possible for someone to create a totally tax-FREE retirement.

No offshore account: https://www.amazon.com/Tax-FREE-Retirement-code-lifetime-income/dp/1475206976

Most retirees would like to have a higher SS benefit

However, most folks don’t or can’t wait to age 70 to claim the highest benefit for their years worked. In fact, if they used their 401k or pension money first, they could have earned an extra 8% per year in benefits from age 66 [full retirement age] to age 70. Once they begin benefits, they will not increase the benefits unless they keep working. So if they begin at age 62, the earliest possible, they will receive less for the rest of their life. I had no choice but to begin at age 62 due to layoffs and industry cuts. My wife waited to age 70 and receives about double the amount I receive. She also worked past age 70 and was able to increase the benefits each year she worked because she was still contributing to the SS account. Thus to have a higher benefit for the rest of their lives, most retirees must find other income to postpone taking SS benefits. The alternative is to strengthen your invested asset base to supplement your retirement income. This usually involves taking more risk in the securities markets. Most retirees choose to stop working before age 70 and receive fewer lifetime benefits.

https://www.amazon.com/Maximize-Social-Security-Benefits-Retirement/dp/1495439224

Retirees save on property taxes

Some states like NJ have a program to help retirees with lower income. Some states offer to property tax relief. FL has homestead exemption. NJ offers a Property Tax Reimbursement Program, also known as the "senior freeze," which reimburses eligible senior citizens for property tax increases. If you qualify, your property tax increases after age 65 are refunded. NJ also has a Homestead Benefit program which provides property tax relief to eligible homeowners. For most homeowners, the benefit is distributed to the municipality in the form of a credit, which reduces your property taxes. This high tax state provides Property Tax Deduction for veterans, seniors and disabled residents. Most retirees do not itemize since the property tax deduction was limited in 2017. Some retirees with high property taxes have found other means of offsetting their high property tax burden.
