So $4,873 minus $2,710 is $2,163 each month or $25,956 a year. That is like adding the amount currently received by the average retired person ($1,907 or $22,884). Roth accounts and retirement savings

A new report published by the American Accounting Association found that savers who used a tax-FREE retirement (Roth IRA, Roth 401k) account were less likely to exhaust their savings funds than those who used tax-deferred accounts (IRA, 401k, 403b). Most tax-deferred users do not realize in advance the extent of their loss to the tax bills each year. Many tax-deferred users don’t appreciate this tax-bill reduction to their nest egg in advance. The events are so far apart that savers may not make the connection between lower current taxation and 100% tax-FREE Roth account balances as they age. The care-free emotional boost is significant once savers start spending their retirement dollars. In addition, some savers will need the extra money in their accounts as they progress to age 100 or have an unexpected expense.

How much should we save for a great retirement income?

With rents and food higher than in the past, your target savings rate needs to change. If you still have decades ahead of you to save for retirement, it’s OK to cut yourself some slack on the 20% part of the model. If you’re a young adult, “60/30/10 is just fine,” as long as you investments portfolio contains over 60% stocks.
