our children are our future

Will your family receive a stimulus payment?

If your AGI (2019 income tax) is over $75K single or $150K joint, Congress thinks you are ‘high earners’ and don’t need the money. Your dependent children age 17 or older will not receive an additional $600. Also nonresident aliens, deceased (unlike last time a million dead got checks), estates (like last time) will not get money. Since the average rent or mortgage payment is over $1,000, Santa can’t even keep his Igloo. Reindeer eat over $600 a week. Santa will be in tent city by January without the reindeer. Ms Claus will have left him and gone to her parent’s house. Santa will join another million folks filing for unemployment. Even toy shop workers will be let go early since the virus has closed the shop in December. Santa is over age 75 so he can get the vaccine but only if he can get to a free site. Some folks have been charged $2,718 after visiting a “FREE” site.

Happy holiday and New Year to all, ever hopeful Santa says.

Wealthy take our tax money elsewhere

The rich are finding it easier than ever to move out of America while enjoying the benefits of citizenship. Be it taxes, business opportunities, regime change or even just visa-free access to certain countries, there are a wide variety of reasons a high-net-worth person secures an additional passport or even new citizenship. With the help of specialty firms like astons.com/ they can use various residency and/or citizenship by investment programs that many countries have enacted. By buying a certain amount of real estate or otherwise investing a threshold amount into a country (based on its individual program), they can receive heavily expedited naturalization. “With the pandemic bringing both economic uncertainty and restrictions around travel, we’ve seen investors opt for more remote and idyllic destinations such as the Caribbean and Vanuatu where they might not have otherwise.” You can save on taxes without having to give up citizenship.

If you start your child’s investment plan now, you won’t have to worry later

The most important element in investment success is not which stocks you pick or timing your trades before the market falls or buying the fastest growing sectors. The Miracle of Compounding is what Warren Buffett says is the single most powerful factor behind his investing success. He's been preaching this for six decades, and it's made him a multi-billionaire. "My wealth has come from a combination of living in America, some lucky genes, and compound interest." We don’t have his genes but we can use compound interest to secure a bright future for our kids. Time makes wealth.

Need an extra $3,000 a year?

How we verify financial offerings are NOT scams?

Verify all the information you receive. Most of us get our news on social media. For instance here are 5 outright fakes thousands of us may take as true information. Twitter, Facebook, Google, and other sources are favored by most scammers since there is no editor checking the validity of the offers. Most financial scams are started online. Many of us are tempted to click on the email from imposters who use logos from our regular bank, online store and gov agencies. Recently I was informed that my PayPal account was suspended and I could fix it by clicking the link. I deleted the email and went directly to PayPal to verify no suspension. PayPal keeps a list of all the scams they see. Google News provides a “Fact check” blotter to highlight false/misleading info. Others like snopes.com/fact-check/biden-nephew/ track plain lies. We might be better off reading social media a entertainment not news. To verify any info or offer, I use traditional news organizations like AP, Reuters, NY Times, and Washington Post. We pay editors to check. When I read claims like a 7% annuity rate, for instance, I know they are fake--not possible. If I did not know about annuities, I would check widely regarded sources like Kiplinger, Money, DowJones, and an expert seller like immediateannuities.com/. Broker scams like Ponzi schemes are harder to detect since trust might exist. However, beware guarantees, high consistent returns. Confirm unusual behavior with the firm’s supervisor.

Better safe than sorry: https://www.amazon.com/Money-Scams-2014-insurance-financial/dp/1505437962

Why pay higher car premiums?

Errors in your credit report and score mean you pay more for car, home and life insurance. Clear up your ‘rap’ sheet so you know the ‘score’ before you shop for new credit. Most credit reports have errors others created. For instance, collectors place invalid or fake debts on your reports to coerce you to pay them. We have to clean up their mess. Credit is easy to lose with wrong info. My personal experience: bureau put another person’s (similar name) defaults on MY report. I was denied credit card and had to pay higher life and car insurance premiums. Can’t sue: government protects credit bureaus so their mistakes are never punished. Find and fix your credit reports before your rates go up: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0151-disputing-errors-credit-reports. Paying $ hundreds to “protect your credit” does not actually stop bad things from happening. You can “monitor” your own credit and SS number abuse at no cost. You can get a free copy of your credit report every 12 months from each bureau: AnnualCreditReport.com  Check credit score: https://www.creditkarma.com/credit-scores. Insurers, landlords, auto dealers, banks, lawyers and lenders use your credit reports. Anyone can buy your credit reports.

Need an extra $3,000 a year?

Save $3,000 a year on financial products/services you don’t need or get for less. We are living longer. We will need more savings for up to 30 years in retirement. Even if we work after age 67, we will eventually not be able to work. Planning for more income later requires we save more now, while we can. Compare what you spend to the US average household spending standard to see where you might save $3,000 a year. My reader’s biggest savings: $3,000 a year in money management fees/commissions. Example: $200,000 nest egg advisor fees 1.5% per year: Save $3,000 by moving to low-fee index account. $3,000 per year savings can add $350,000 to your funds in just 25 years; $1 million in 35 years. Avoid nursing home later.

Best gift for your child/grandchild

Don’t you wish your parents had started a tax-FREE investment account for you when you were young? You might be a millionaire already if they had bought Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Berkshire Hathaway, Johnson & Johnson, JPMorgan Chase, Visa, and Procter & Gamble 10, 20, 30 years ago. Make sure you teach your kids how to create wealth the easy way by using compounding and low-cost index accounts. According to Warren Buffett investing is not rocket science but just being patient: time. Most of my readers earn 11% a year on average.

Let compounding build your child’s future

Where to invest for the coming Year of the Vaccines?

No one knows what will happen in 2021. Every advisor in town has an opinion—either from their firm’s analysts or their favorite wholesaler—but they don’t know. So should you keep paying them a quarterly fee of 1-2%? You could lose up to 62% of your total possible nest egg that way. Or you could go with the best advice master-investor Warren Buffett offers. You could double your money in 10-12 years. Buffett’s advice is different because he doesn’t take your money. He’s different because he knows he doesn’t know. His strategy is pretty simple. First, invest in a broad market index fund like the Vanguard 500 Index. He even recommends it for retirement investing. Second, use a low-cost fund like those run by Vanguard which has no outside owner. Third, don’t try to out guess the market by trading ETFs or individual stocks or sectors. They are easy to trade but that assumes you know what will happen. You and millions of ‘professional’ traders don’t know. Get used to the uncertainty. All we really know is that the 500 stock index has outperformed other assets over time: 11% a year on average. It does better leaving your money alone. Fourth, Buffett credits compounding for his success: buy and hold. If you are new to index investing, give it a chance with only 10% of your retirement money.

Earn more by paying less. https://www.amazon.com/Warren-Buffett-Your-Investment-Advisor/dp/1518690963

Will you have enough retirement income?

You can afford retirement starting now. There are a few rules to follow but in time you will have enough. If you start now, using low-cost stock index funds inside a tax-FREE account, you can make it. There are easy ways to track your progress that paid advisors use that you have access to also. Over time, you can have enough saved to live well. How much can you accumulate in your investment account? Answer: $1 million at $250/mo; $3,000/yr; 35 years. Track progress here: https://investor.vanguard.com/calculator-tools/retirement-income-calculator. Don’t panic: expect your low-cost stock index fund like the Vanguard 500 Index to go up and down: a +31% and a -37%: average +11%.

Start now: https://www.amazon.com/You-Can-Afford-Retirement-FEE-FREE/dp/1517738253

Let compounding build your child’s future

Make sure you teach your kids how to create wealth the easy way. My parents were not investors. At my first job, I had no clue which investment option to use for my 401k contribution and company match. The HR person told me to put it into the 'safe' stable value fund. That was the worst choice at my age I learned later when I got my securities licenses. If I had followed their advice I would have ended up with $150,000 instead of a Wealth Reserve of $877,233 about 33 years later. We have used this 'Wealth Reserve' as I call it to have funds to use low-cost high-deductible insurance, to buy two homes and 5 cars with higher down payments or cash, and now to receive $2,500 a monthly in a retirement supplement.

https://www.amazon.com/Give-your-child-leg-up-manage/dp/1096505355

Why is it wise to diversify?

Readers have asked about holding the stock of their company in their retirement plan. Take a moment to compare the percentage of that stock to the total of all investments. Most often anything over 10% in the stock of one company is considered risky. Unless you are a company executive you are unlikely to know when to sell to avoid a loss. Some stocks do better than others but you and your advisor just don’t know which. Buy all.  Consider that if your employer should change stock value and your account drops by 50%, would you feel like holding on thru the next 10-20 years with all that stock. If you work for a company in the S&P 500 you may feel safe but don’t assume growth will last forever. Plan ahead for a time when the value of your holdings falls—will you panic and sell then? Keep an eye on a market index fund: 2020 up 16% and over 11% long-term.

Stay diversified: https://www.amazon.com/Buffett-Bogle-Holy-Bible-Investment/dp/1523693045

Is an “advisor matching tool” right for you?

“SmartAsset's matching tool lets you compare and interview up to 3 financial advisors,” for free. See your 3 financial advisor matches. You will need to complete a 12 question on screen survey and then give your contact information in order to obtain “3 financial advisor matches.” You don’t actually get to “see your matches.” Now advisors have your email and you have given an info-laden lead to a broker/advisor. I happened to know the availability of local advisors and none of them offer financial planning for a set fee. This ad promises “objective advice from a local fiduciary on your budget” but there are none. Most local advisors are not fiduciaries. I researched. All but one provides ‘planning’ but it costs you an annual fee and commissions. All but one needed over $1 million in “investable assets” to start. Usually this means your account money must be moved to their firm so they can take their quarterly fees whether they make you money or not. Better to use a salaried fiduciary from one of the large online fund firms.

https://www.amazon.com/Fiduciary-Rule-BEST-dont-pay-fees-anymore/dp/1530980275

Save $3,000 a year for a $1 million retirement fund

We are living longer. We will need more savings for up to 30 years in retirement. Even if we work after age 67, we will eventually not be able to work. Planning for more income later requires we save more now, while we can. Compare what you spend to the US average household spending standard to see where you might save $3,000 a year. Biggest savings: $3,000 a year in money management fees/commissions. Example: $200,000 nest egg advisor fees 1.5% per year: Save $3,000 by moving to low-fee index account. $3,000 per year savings can add $350,000 to your funds in just 25 years.

Avoid nursing home later: https://www.amazon.com/Stop-wasting-000-every-year/dp/146108394X

Robo advisor rates high in customer satisfaction

Covid pandemic has helped reshape the retail financial services model. Robos have become popular as most services must be delivered virtually now. JD Power survey data shows young investors are satisfied with the robo advisor services model. Investors between the ages of 31 to 45 had the greatest satisfaction with their advisor. That represented 46% of traditional investors and 69% robo-investors. Traditional investors ages 46 to 75 had relatively low satisfaction ratings with their advisor, according to the Investor Insights: COVID-19 and Robo-Advice study. Even Warren Buffett, leading hands-on advisor, believes in allowing your money to grow without human interference.

Are those “free” seminars that include lunch right for you?

Why do some folks wait to start taking Social Security?

One reader began taking retirement benefits at age 62 in 2010 because they could not find work. They headed a sales program at a bank after doing the same at small brokerage firms. In both cases the companies were purchased by bigger companies and this person was not needed. The spouse of this reader began taking retirement benefits at age 70 in 2013 because waiting longer provided no extra benefits. The spouse was still working so they were also adding annual benefits each year. Both individuals ended their working lives making about $100,000 gross—the highest 35 years of earnings determine the lifetime SS benefits. They have been receiving benefits for years but the amounts are forever very far apart. The reader receives $1,701 a month; the spouse receives $3,044 a month—that’s $483,480 more over the next 30 years. Their total benefits over 30 years: $1,708,200. They asked me for help in finding ways to maximize their income to age 100. Both have parents that lived a long time and they want to be prepared.

Is a Roth conversion right for you?
We have a unique opportunity to save on future taxes from our retirement accounts: a Roth IRA. Many of us have NOT had to take our RMD for 2020. Required Minimum Distributions are the IRS’s way of forcing us to pay tax on untaxed retirement savings. Since we could skip 2020 taxes on this money—perhaps 3-4% of our total nest egg of IRAs, pensions, 401ks, 403bs, we could convert some of that money by December 31 and save paying higher taxes in the future. Example: Convert $10,000 traditional IRA funds to a Roth IRA. We pay income tax on that $10,000—perhaps 22% or $2,200. Depending on our portfolio returns, that $10,000 could be worth $20,000 in 10 years at 7% annual return. In 10 years, that 22% rate could be 27.5% again. We would pay 27.5% on $20,000 or $5,500. We may save $3,300. And in 10 years we may have needed that extra $3,300 more acutely. Learn what to do with your RMD.

Are those “free” seminars that include lunch right for you?

We have all been invited to hear a sales pitch at some time. Sure you can go and listen and not spend any money. However, what you pay for is your future peace of mind. We have had to decline calls and pitches from that initial contact for years. Legally, the sales person has the right to keep contacting us because we have a established business relationship (EBR). It is hard to stop these calls even when you ask and place your number on the DoNotCall list. The sales people don’t give up on a paid lead easily. A court order might work but you have to pay for enforcement. Also, tax-exempt non-profit organizations are not required to keep do-not-call lists. We receive hundreds of robo callers with just the town-state listed on caller ID. You need more than that to stop these sellers. Lobbyists have paid our reps to make sure they can bug us to death.

This is how Congress people make money on illegal insider information

Sen David Perdue (R-GA) is at the heart of special meetings involved with health care decisions. On Jan. 23, he learned that the coronavirus posed a major economic and public health threat, he sold off $1 million to $5 million in Cardlytics stock at $86 a share before it plunged. In March, Perdue bought the stock back for $30 a share, investing between $200,000 and $500,000. Those shares have now quadrupled in value, closing at $121 a share on 11/24. His profits did not come from superior market analysis but from insider information—something that is illegal for you and I. Martha Stewart went to jail for this kind of thing. Yet GOP led judicial arm of government never seems to find the evidence to indict let alone convict their friends. How can we have faith our reps will do what is right by us? GA voters will decide if Perdue should be representing them and tricking us. Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) did the same thing, sparking a Senate ethics investigation. Loeffler wrote that her household would “divest from individual stocks,” her subsequent financial disclosure form showed that she kept $5 million to $25 million worth of Intercontinental Exchange stock. Together, Perdue and Loeffler prove American-type Socialism is for and by the Rich: two uber-rich senators whose wealth helped bring them power and put them in a position where they could make more money.

Trump promises to leave WH if Electors vote

But he promised to show his taxes before elected in 2016—but did not. He made many promises—The Wall paid by Mexico, job loss to China, end deficit, close Afghanistan, disarm Kim, etc. Can anyone believe him? After promising he will leave if states declare Biden the winner, he said, “If they do, they made a mistake.” He has still not accepted some states’ results so he may go to court to fix their “mistake,” postponing his moving date. Trump loves to fight and has his AR 15 groups “standing by.” Trump has trouble seeing facts so he is avoiding accountability on many levels. He just pardoned someone who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI. He will probably pardon all his friends who continue to kiss his ass. Since personal loyalty is the highest good to him, he will not pardon his right hand--lawyer Michael Cohen. However, Cohen gets out of jail to avoid the sickness that thousands of poor prisoners must endure. In a larger context, he is no different than other powerful men. No one who caused the 2007-8 financial meltdowns went to jail. Obama’s lawyers say they could not have proven “intent” so we never see the powerful face accountability. Our justice system does not let our juries decide because powerful people have elite status. Judges usually come down hard on street crime but not on the well positioned. Not one executive/doctor/druggist is going to jail for the OxyContin addictions and subsequent 70,000 deaths. Oxy killed at least 70,000 but the Sacklers took $ billions home before bankruptcy. Drug dealers who sell addictive drugs like the Sackler family go to jail all the time. The wealthy criminals will continue to get away with murder without accountability. All they give up is money. Of course they will continue to ‘do the crime since there is no (jail) time.’

One reader’s experience with Buffett advice during virus

Why is Warren Buffett’s advice to most investors the best you can get? And it is free of advisors fees and charges. His advice of “buy and hold” low-cost market indices helped this reader move their retirement nest egg from $991,546 to $1,039,555 in November alone. Buffett backs up his advice with his most recent example: he won $ million from a hedge fund manager who used 5 different hedge funds of top Wall Street ‘professionals.’ Over ten years, Buffett’s pick—Vanguard’s 500 Index—beat 5 hedges chosen by Ted Seides, Protégé Partners. Ted has moved to a higher-fee fund. Paying extra fees and charges does not assure us of financial success over time. For many folks, paying so-called financial ‘professionals’ can mean the LOSS of over 50% of our potential gains over time. We are assured of earning the market returns over time which is better than guessing whether our advisor or broker has the right answers for the coming years. This reader, a teacher, can relax in 2021 with $48,000 in extra retirement income.

Money is how foreigners and the wealthy make US policy

Foreign countries, their wealthy and their ambassadors turned to con man Imaad Zuberi to get face time in our Congress. A CIA officer called him the “best connected person I know,” marveling at the depth of his Rolodex contact list. Money is the juice that lights up the wealthy-Congressional connections. Where does Zuberi get the money to become the top donor to presidential candidates? From those with the money: “We get request(s) for meeting(s) from all scumbag of the world, warlords, kings, queens, presidents for life, military dictators, clan chiefs, tribal chiefs and etc.” Zuberi was the “mercenary” political donor who gave to anyone — often using illegal straw donor cutouts — he thought could help him. “Pay to play”, he explained to clients, was just “how America work(s).” “Pay to play” is why our interests are not what Congress considers when making laws and regulations. Even now as Trump nears the End, lobbyists make offers for Trump pardons. The wealthy—inside and outside our country—determine the course of our lives on the grand scale. Trump is not the only one who takes money from foreign players. Now you know why we taxpayers had to bailout the banks, the foreign banks and business after the 2007-8 market crash. We didn’t rob the banks; the wealthy executives and stockholders did. No one went to jail. We will pay for the bailout forever.

Where to invest if you have maxed out IRAs

Several readers have asked where to invest since they have contributed their $6,000 ($7,000 over age 50) each for 2020. We use two options. We can prepay our taxes on deferred money in our IRA so that any growth in our IRA will be tax-FREE in our Roth IRA via an IRA conversion. This will also reduce the amount of tax we have to pay when we begin taking the mandated distributions (RMD). And/or we can buy a stock with no dividends in a regular brokerage cash account. As long as we don’t sell or trade, there are no taxes on the future gains in value and no tax on dividends. We could buy Warren Buffett’s company stock BRK.B which is really a mutual fund since it owns many other profitable companies and stocks. Many companies pay no dividends so choose wisely. One final thought: give up to $15,000 to grandkids for their 529 college fund.
