How to protect your
nest egg
Most of us are
concerned about our nest egg for the present and the future. Is locking it away
in a bank account or CD the best for us? This is the path many take. However
even at 3% inflation, a nest egg
shrinks—it can fall by HALF in 25 years. Unless you have a fortune coming
from relatives or a business sale, you may be in trouble. The way some of my
readers are protecting their egg is by making it bigger. Obviously you may need
to take a risk but they are using a calculated risk not a foolish risk. There
are immediate risks like gambling an egg at the casino or commodities or
leveraged product at your broker’s firm. An educated risk is one that you can account
for in your portfolio choices. These include diversification and quality asset
ownership. Some investors are keeping their stock market index balance higher
than suggested by their advisor. Some are changing their asset type to more
conservative ones like residential real estate funds. Some have purchased
individual rental real estate when mortgage rates were unbelievably low and
properties were cheap. We are now past that time of purchase and they are
looking forward to sales or a 1035 exchange. You can keep it simple by
comparing the long-term growth of a low-cost stock market index fund rate to
your present rate of return and picking the avenue that best suits your time
frame. Some readers are holding over 50% of their eggs for the long term in stocks
simply because they know that the 11%
average will help them in the future.

Market volatility
will continue: what to do?
There is no ‘safe’
investment: risk must always be figured into your investment strategy. Is it
risky to put all your money in high-interest CDs and money markets? Is it risky
to put all your money in any one investment? Most experienced investors know
that they have to avoid the extremes of risk since the situation can change
quickly. Right now both the stock market is above average (S&P500:
18.09%) and the fixed income market is above average (Five-year: 5.4%). Many
financial professionals get paid to speculate on which way markets will swing.
They have all been wrong at different times, so it is foolish to follow any one
guru. Most of my readers are telling me that they are “staying the course”
meaning they will keep their favorite current asset allocation. They have moved
from 70% stocks to a lower comfort zone as they aged. If they had 30 years to
recover from a stock market decline they were holding at 70-80%. As they
entered their 70s, they made another adjustment. Finally, most in their 80s
have shifted their ratio to 40-50% stocks. Some made changes every 10 years but
very few made changes because the market screamed “sell” or “buy.” Most have
financial future ‘insurance.’
