Investors learn picking winning stocks is too hard

It is hard to know how much we need for retirement income

According to one survey, 47% of respondents have less than $100,000 saved for retirement. With Social Security benefits, this amount will likely require much thrift in spending during our senior years. Almost half of the participants—43%—believe they can retire with less than $500,000 in savings. Given that inflation will decrease our nest egg by HALF every 20 years; this will leave us with about $1,041 a month. The average monthly Social Security benefit among retired workers is about $1,666. That’s about $2,707 a month. Clearly some of us are going to have to keep working to make ends meet. Lack of money in retirement, not saving enough and not paying down debt are the three regrets of many retirees. Do something now: find an estimate of your retirement income at retirement-income-calculator.

Investors learn picking winning stocks is too hard

It is almost impossible to pick the stocks that will beat the market overall. Most advisors need to sell their firm’s favorite stocks for a profit so buying a low-cost index is rarely recommended. Proven over and over, money managers are really terrible at finding the next “big play.” There are too many variables and unknown conditions for even the smartest computer/analyst to pick the right ones for the immediate or even the long-term future. So most experienced investors follow the advice of the proven masters of investing— Warren Buffett and John Bogle. The index of all or the largest stocks promises to provide long-term investors with the best chance of success: diversification, low-cost, solid 10% returns and ease of use. You can use either the fund or ETF (brokerage account) versions. You grow your money in a tax-FREE or tax deductible account. The best part is you never have to be anxious about your stock picks. Investing is not gambling; it is owning profitable businesses.

Is pay-per-mile insurance right for you?

With pay-per-mile, you pay a few cents for every mile you drive, which could translate to a much lower monthly rate. Drivers who travel fewer than 10,000 miles per year may be able to save money with pay-per-mile. This cover may be right for those who work from home or have very short commutes. Pay-per-mile could save you a small fortune compared to traditional insurance. College students, seniors, public transit riders, and anyone who drives less than 30 miles daily can save. Remember that the insurer’s meter also tracks the quality of your driving. Slow down, drive deliberately.

Save on insurance you don’t need

Travel insurance may not cover your event since there are usually many conditions you may not be informed of at purchase. Collision coverage might not be worth it if your car is especially old. Home warranties are another contract that must be researched—there are few pros. Identity theft is not preventable—the coverage does not stop criminals—it only helps pay for repairs, which may already be available in homeowners or credit cards cover. Dental insurance through work is a bargain. If you buy cover, it pays little on your big bills like root canals and crowns. Child life insurance is a waste of money. It is better to put the premiums into a mutual fund that could grow to $25,000 over time. If you have auto cover, you don’t need rental car coverage. Your credit card may extend the manufacturer’s warranty instead of buying extended warranty insurance. Take a look at the AVMA’s guidelines for pet health insurance policies and know what to watch out for.

Is gold a great investment for uncertain times?

Gold is not what it seems. Gold is a commodity and the price change is determined by supply and demand. You probably think a bar holds its value. But most of us don’t buy a bar for long-term security. We buy gov Treasuries for security long-term. Most of us think gold vehicles are better than stocks for the long term but that has proven wrong time and again. The S&P 500 Index of stocks had a 10.43% average annual total return between 1970 and 2022, according to an analysis by Securian Asset Management. Gold had a 7.7% return over the same period. The price of gold, which is often viewed as a safe haven, typically jumps during times of fear and economic malaise. This makes gold a speculative investment for short periods of stock market falls. Folks rush into gold when afraid of a crisis like now but the S&P 500 has already passed 19% gain in 2023. Over time stocks outperform gold by 3 to 1 ratio.

The wealthy are bargain hunters just like you

Yes, many wealthy working people got rich and stay rich by shopping for the best price/value for their situation. They got wealthy by saving and avoiding wasting money on stuff they did not need. You may do the same but the wealthy got that way by doing bargains for everything. They don’t pay their financial services person 1-2% of their portfolio every year. That $5-10,000 a year savings goes straight into their low-cost mutual fund account. They may have invested in Apple, MS, Amazon and other stocks early so now they are sitting on $1 million worth of securities. They use those securities to take out loans for investment or for current expenses. They don’t pay taxes on those loans because they are loans not INCOME. Income is taxed. Read how some of the working millionaires have done it in The Millionaire Next Door.

A wealthy person used tax loophole to save $38 million

Most of us can’t use this loophole to save taxes. However, when the rich receive a tax deduction, those unpaid taxes must fall to us to make up. For the ultrawealthy, donating valuables like artwork, real estate and stocks to their OWN charitable foundation is an alluring way to cut their tax bills. In exchange for generous tax breaks, they are supposed to use the assets to serve the public: Art might be put on display where people can see it, or stock sold to fund programs to fight child poverty. Across the U.S., such foundations hold over $1 trillion in assets costing us taxpayers $ Billions in later taxation. The law was supposed to benefit us the public but often it only helps a few elites. A tech billionaire used his charitable foundation to buy his girlfriend’s house. A venture capitalist couple’s foundation bought the multimillion dollar house next to their own without ever opening the property to the public. A favorite strategy is to claim your private foundation museum of your own art as a ‘reservation-only’ operation. Our Congress people make the rules and let the wealthy contributors evade enforcement. Are wealthy donors likely to start following the rules of a public museum? Response: “But this is my museum!”

Our Universe is Mind-Blowing

Light is both a particle and a wave depending on how we look at the light.

I don’t think that there is any such thing as a position or a velocity of a particle.

Everything (galaxies to stones) in universe made of subatomic energy ‘vibrations’

A subatomic ‘particle’ is the smallest possible vibration (quantum) of a quantum field.

Mass–energy equivalence: E=mc^2.  At the smallest level; Everything is moving

Energy into matter: scientists converted light energy directly into matter in one step

In place of atomic lattice, light waves used to create an optical lattice with same geometry

Physics Nobel Prize: “entanglement” 2 particles share info instantly at a distance

Quantum mechanics violates local realism: two objects behave as single system at distance
